    Persistence to high temperatures of interlayer coherence in an organic superconductor

    The interlayer magnetoresistance ρzz\rho_{zz} of the organic metal \cuscn is studied in fields of up to 45 T and at temperatures TT from 0.5 K to 30 K. The peak in ρzz\rho_{zz} seen in in-plane fields, a definitive signature of interlayer coherence, remains to TTs exceeding the Anderson criterion for incoherent transport by a factor 30\sim 30. Angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations are modeled using an approach based on field-induced quasiparticle paths on a 3D Fermi surface, to yield the TT dependence of the scattering rate τ1\tau^{-1}. The results suggest that τ1\tau^{-1} does not vary strongly over the Fermi surface, and that it has a T2T^2 dependence due to electron-electron scattering

    A comparison of functional and tractography based networks in cerebral small vessel disease.

    OBJECTIVE: MRI measures of network integrity may be useful disease markers in cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). We compared the sensitivity and reproducibility of MRI derived structural and functional network measures in healthy controls and SVD subjects. METHODS: Diffusion tractography and resting state fMRI were used to create connectivity matrices from 26 subjects with symptomatic MRI confirmed lacunar stroke and 19 controls. Matrices were constructed at multiple scales based on a multi-resolution cortical atlas and at multiple thresholds for the matrix density. Network parameters were calculated over the multiple resolutions and thresholds. In addition the reproducibility of structural and functional network parameters was determined in a subset of the subjects (15 SVD, 10 controls) who were scanned twice. RESULTS: Structural networks showed a highly significant loss of network integrity in SVD cases compared to controls, for all network measures. In contrast functional networks showed no difference between SVD and controls. Structural network measures were highly reproducible in both cases and controls, with ICC values consistently over 0.8. In contrast functional network measures showed much poorer reproducibility with ICC values in the range 0.4-0.6 overall, and even lower in SVD cases. CONCLUSIONS: Structural networks identify impaired network integrity, and are highly reproducible, in SVD, supporting their use as markers of SVD disease severity. In contrast, functional networks showed low reproducibility, particularly in SVD cases, and were unable to detect differences between SVD cases and controls with this sample size

    High-magnetic field lattice length changes in URu2Si2

    We report high magnetic field (up to 45 T) c-axis thermal expansion and magnetostriction experiments on URu2Si2 single crystals. The sample length change associated with the transition to the hidden order phase becomes increasingly discontinous as the magnetic field is raised above 25 T. The re-entrant ordered phase III is clearly observed in both the thermal expansion and magnetostriction above 36 T, in good agreement with previous results. The sample length is also discontinuous at the boundaries of this phase, mainly at the upper boundary. A change in the sign of the coefficient of thermal-expansion is observed at the metamagnetic transition (B_M = 38 T) which is likely related to the existence of a quantum critical end point.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in PR

    Magnetic field induced lattice anomaly inside the superconducting state of CeCoIn5_5: evidence of the proposed Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state

    We report high magnetic field linear magnetostriction experiments on CeCoIn5_5 single crystals. Two features are remarkable: (i) a sharp discontinuity in all the crystallographic axes associated with the upper superconducting critical field Bc2B_{c2} that becomes less pronounced as the temperature increases; (ii) a distinctive second order-like feature observed only along the c-axis in the high field (10 T BBc2 \lesssim B \leq B_{c2}) low temperature (TT \lesssim 0.35 K) region. This second order transition is observed only when the magnetic field lies within 20o^o of the ab-planes and there is no signature of it above Bc2B_{c2}, which raises questions regarding its interpretation as a field induced magnetically ordered phase. Good agreement with previous results suggests that this anomaly is related to the transition to the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state.Comment: 3 figures, 5 page

    A versatile and compact capacitive dilatometer

    We describe the design, construction, calibration, and operation of a relatively simple differential capacitive dilatometer suitable for measurements of thermal expansion and magnetostriction from 300 K to below 1 K with a low-temperature resolution of about 0.05 angstroms. The design is characterized by an open architecture permitting measurements on small samples with a variety of shapes. Dilatometers of this design have operated successfully with a commercial physical property measurement system, with several types of cryogenic refrigeration systems, in vacuum, in helium exchange gas, and while immersed in liquid helium (magnetostriction only) to temperatures of 30 mK and in magnetic fields to 45 T.Comment: 8 pages, incorporating 6 figures, submitted to Rev.     Characteristics of populations of granulosa cells from individual follicles in women undergoing 'coasting' during controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for IVF

    BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional characteristics of granulosa cell populations of individual follicles of women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for IVF/ICSI in whom gonadotrophin had been withheld (‘coasted’) for the prevention of OHSS. METHODS: Follicular fluid and granulosa cells were isolated from 224 individual follicles in 41 women who had been coasted and from 257 individual follicles in 50 women who had a ‘normal’ response to COS. Cells were cultured at 10 000 cells per well, to evaluate progesterone secretion. Follicular fluid was assayed for progesterone and estradiol (E2). RESULTS: No significant differences were observed between the two groups with respect to granulosa cell number or follicular fluid progesterone and E2 and follicle size, the retrieval of an oocyte and the subsequent fertilization of the oocyte. However, the granulosa cells derived from the coasted group showed a higher rate of progesterone secretion per cell at 72 h which was sustained for longer. Differences were also seen at 72 and 120 h of culture with a loss of correlation between progesterone secretion and follicle diameter in the coasted group. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that coasting has an effect on the functional capacity of the granulosa cells and the duration of their function. It is likely that in women at risk of OHSS who are not coasted, the granulosa cells have the capacity to produce significantly more chemical mediators per cell and for a more prolonged period of time
