The intermediate scattering function for quasi-elastic scattering in the presence of memory friction
We derive an analytical expression for the intermediate scattering function
of a particle on a flat surface obeying the Generalised Langevin Equation, with
exponential memory friction. Numerical simulations based on an extended phase
space method confirm the analytical results. The simulated trajectories provide
qualitative insight into the effect that introducing a finite memory timescale
has on the analytical line shapes. The relative amplitude of the long-time
exponential tail of the line shape is suppressed, but its decay rate is
unchanged, reflecting the fact that the cutoff frequency of the exponential
kernel affects short-time correlations but not the diffusion coefficient which
is defined in terms of a long-time limit. The exponential sensitivity of the
relative amplitudes to the decay time of the chosen memory kernel is a very
strong indicator for the prospect of inferring a friction kernel and the
physical insights from experimentally measured intermediate scattering
functions

PIGLE â Particles Interacting in Generalized Langevin Equation simulator
We present a package using Simulink and MATLAB to perform molecular dynamics simulations of interacting particles obeying a Generalized Langevin Equation. The package, which accounts for three spatial dimensions and rigid-body like rotation, is tuned to explore surface diffusion of co-adsorbed species. The physical parameters are species specific, and include userdefined colored noise spectra and memory friction kernels acting independently on translational and rotational degrees of freedom. We benchmark the simulations using established analytical results for dynamical correlation functions, and we use the package to numerically verify novel analytical results concerning dissipative rotational motion and mutli-exponential friction kernels. Structural Evolution of a Cyclooctatetraene Adlayer on Cu(111) during Isothermal Desorption
The use of helium diffraction patterns to study desorption processes is explored as a novel extension to traditional methods based on helium
specular reflection. The sample, cyclooctatetraene adsorbed on Cu(111), provides a rich but complex structure. The modulation of cyclooctatetraene by Cu(111) is manifested as a convolution in the diffraction pattern, displaying an averaged super-cell symmetry of (7 â3 Ă 7 â3)R30âŠ. The adlayer expands during isothermal desorption, and the change in lattice constant provides a direct measure of the coverage as a function of time. We find a desorption energy of 0:96 ± 0:01 eV at saturation of the first
layer, and an upper limit of 1:62 ± 0:07 eV for isolated molecules. These values, and details of the assigned structure, indicate chemisorbed

Comparison of effective dose and lifetime risk of cancer Incidence of CT attenuation correction acquisitions and radiopharmaceutical administration for myocardial perfusion imaging
Objective: To measure the organ dose and calculate effective dose from CT attenuation correction (CTAC) acquisitions from four commonly used gamma camera single photon emission CT/CT systems.
Methods: CTAC dosimetry data was collected using thermoluminescent dosemeters on GE Healthcare's Infiniaâą Hawkeyeâą (GE Healthcare, Buckinghamshire, UK) four- and single-slice systems, Siemens Symbiaâą T6 (Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany) and the Philips Precedence (Philips Healthcare, Amsterdam, Netherlands). Organ and effective dose from the administration of 99mTc-tetrofosmin and 99mTc-sestamibi were calculated using International Commission of Radiological Protection reports 80 and 106. Using these data, the lifetime biological risk was calculated.
Results: The Siemens Symbia gave the lowest CTAC dose (1.8mSv) followed by the GE Infinia Hawkeye single- slice (1.9mSv), GE Infinia Hawkeye four-slice (2.5mSv) and Philips Precedence v. 3.0. Doses were significantly lower than the calculated doses from radiopharmaceutical administration (11 and 14mSv for 99mTc-tetrofosmin and 99mTc-sestamibi, respectively). Overall lifetime biological risks were lower, which suggests that using CTAC data posed minimal risk to the patient. Comparison of data for breast tissue demonstrated a higher risk than that from the radiopharmaceutical administration.
Conclusion: CTAC doses were confirmed to be much lower than those from radiopharmaceutical administration. The localized nature of the CTAC exposure compared to the radiopharmaceutical biological distribution indicated dose and risk to the breast to be higher.
Advances in knowledge: This research proved that CTAC is a comparatively low-dose acquisition. However, it has been shown that there is increased risk for breast tissue especially in the younger patients. As per legislation, justification is required and CTAC should only be used in situations that demonstrate sufficient net benefit
Increasing condom use in heterosexual men: development of a theory-based interactive digital intervention
Increasing condom use to prevent sexually transmitted infections is a key public health goal. Interventions are more likely to be effective if they are theory- and evidence-based. The Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) provides a framework for intervention development. To provide an example of how the BCW was used to develop an intervention to increase condom use in heterosexual men (the MenSS website), the steps of the BCW intervention development process were followed, incorporating evidence from the research literature and views of experts and the target population. Capability (e.g. knowledge) and motivation (e.g. beliefs about pleasure) were identified as important targets of the intervention. We devised ways to address each intervention target, including selecting interactive features and behaviour change techniques. The BCW provides a useful framework for integrating sources of evidence to inform intervention content and deciding which influences on behaviour to target
Judgments of learning and improvement
Can learners accurately judge the rate of their learning? Rates of learning may be informative when study time is allocated across materials, and students' judgments of their learning rate have been proposed as a possible metacognitive tool. Participants estimated how much they improved between presentations in multitrial learning situations in which n-gram paragraphs (in Experiments 1 and 2) or word pairs (Experiments 3 and 4) were learned . In the first experiment, participants rated improvement on a percentage scale, whereas on the second and third, judgments were given on a 0â6 scale. Experiment 4 used both a percentage scale and an absolute number scale. The main result was that judgments of improvement were poorly correlated with actual improvement and, in one case, were negatively correlated. Although judgments of improvement were correlated with changes in judgments of learning, they were not reliable indicators of actual improvement. Implications are discussed for theoretical work on metacognition
Ultra-high bandwidth quantum secured data transmission
Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides an attractive means for securing communications in optical fibre networks. However, deployment of the technology has been hampered by the frequent need for dedicated dark fibres to segregate the very weak quantum signals from conventional traffic. Up until now the coexistence of QKD with data has been limited to bandwidths that are orders of magnitude below those commonly employed in fibre optic communication networks. Using an optimised wavelength divisional multiplexing scheme, we transport QKD and the prevalent 100 Gb/s data format in the forward direction over the same fibre for the first time. We show a full quantum encryption system operating with a bandwidth of 200 Gb/s over a 100 km fibre. Exploring the ultimate limits of the technology by experimental measurements of the Raman noise, we demonstrate it is feasible to combine QKD with 10 Tb/s of data over a 50 km link. These results suggest it will be possible to integrate QKD and other quantum photonic technologies into high bandwidth data communication infrastructures, thereby allowing their widespread deployment
Gender differences in the association between adiposity and probable major depression: a cross-sectional study of 140,564 UK Biobank participants
<b>Background</b><p></p>
Previous studies on the association between adiposity and mood disorder have produced contradictory results, and few have used measurements other than body mass index (BMI). We examined the association between probable major depression and several measurements of adiposity: BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-hip-ratio (WHR), and body fat percentage (BF%).<p></p>
<b>Methods</b><p></p>
We conducted a cross-sectional study using baseline data on the sub-group of UK Biobank participants who were assessed for mood disorder. Multivariate logistic regression models were used, adjusting for potential confounders including: demographic and life-style factors, comorbidity and psychotropic medication.<p></p>
<b>Results</b><p></p>
Of the 140,564 eligible participants, evidence of probable major depression was reported by 30,145 (21.5%). The fully adjusted odds ratios (OR) for obese participants were 1.16 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12, 1.20) using BMI, 1.15 (95% CI 1.11, 1.19) using WC, 1.09 (95% CI 1.05, 1.13) using WHR and 1.18 (95% CI 1.12, 1.25) using BF% (all pâ<0.001). There was a significant interaction between adiposity and gender (pâ=â0.001). Overweight women were at increased risk of depression with a dose response relationship across the overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2), obese I (30.0-34.9 kg/m2), II (35.0-39.9 kg/m2) and III (â„40.0 kg/m2) categories; fully adjusted ORs 1.14, 1.20, 1.29 and 1.48, respectively (all pâ<â0.001). In contrast, only obese III men had significantly increased risk of depression (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.08, 1.54, pâ=â0.006).<p></p>
<b>Conclusion</b><p></p>
Adiposity was associated with probable major depression, irrespective of the measurement used. The association was stronger in women than men. Physicians managing overweight and obese women should be alert to this increased risk
Hybrid PET/CT and PET/MRI imaging of vulnerable coronary plaque and myocardial scar tissue in acute myocardial infarction
BACKGROUND: Following an acute coronary syndrome, combined CT and PET with 18F-NaF can identify coronary atherosclerotic plaques that have ruptured or eroded. However, the processes behind 18F-NaF uptake in vulnerable plaques remain unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ten patients with STEMI were scanned after 18F-NaF injection, for 75 minutes in a Siemens PET/MR scanner using delayed enhancement (LGE). They were then scanned in a Siemens PET/CT scanner for 10 minutes. Tissue-to-background ratio (TBR) was compared between the culprit lesion in the IRA and remote non-culprit lesions in an effort to independently validate prior studies. Additionally, we performed a proof-of-principle study comparing TBR in scar tissue and remote myocardium using LGE images and PET/MR or PET/CT data. From the 33 coronary lesions detected on PET/CT, TBRs for culprit lesions were higher than for non-culprit lesions (TBR = 2.11 ± 0.45 vs 1.46 ± 0.48; P < 0.001). Interestingly, the TBR measured on the PET/CT was higher for infarcted myocardium than for remote myocardium (TBR = 0.81 ± 0.10 vs 0.71 ± 0.05; P = 0.003). These results were confirmed using the PET/MR data (TBR = 0.81 ± 0.10 for scar, TBR = 0.71 ± 0.06 for healthy myocardium, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: We confirmed the potential of 18F-NaF PET/CT imaging to detect vulnerable coronary lesions.
