    How to Sample Behavior and Emotions of Traders: A Psychological Approach and an Empirical Example

    This paper describes an empirical approach based on psychological methodology, which assumes that individual behaviour must be studied within its natural environment. This approach is called experience sampling (ESM). To illustrate the potentials of employing ESM in the stock-trading domain, we report on observations from an explorative pilot study designed to shed light on the following issues: how outcomes of trades are perceived by traders; the reasons traders associate with good and bad trades; and how traders’ moods fluctuate over a trading day.

    Etching-dependent reproducible memory switching in vertical SiO2 structures

    Vertical structures of SiO2_{2} sandwiched between a top tungsten electrode and conducting non-metal substrate were fabricated by dry and wet etching methods. Both structures exhibit similar voltage-controlled memory behaviors, in which short voltage pulses (1 Ό\mus) can switch the devices between high- and low-impedance states. Through the comparison of current-voltage characteristics in structures made by different methods, filamentary conduction at the etched oxide edges is most consistent with the results, providing insights into similar behaviors in metal/SiO/metal systems.     Critical Analysis of Primary Literature in a Master's-Level Class: Effects on Self-Efficacy and Science-Process Skills.

    The ability to think analytically and creatively is crucial for success in the modern workforce, particularly for graduate students, who often aim to become physicians or researchers. Analysis of the primary literature provides an excellent opportunity to practice these skills. We describe a course that includes a structured analysis of four research papers from diverse fields of biology and group exercises in proposing experiments that would follow up on these papers. To facilitate a critical approach to primary literature, we included a paper with questionable data interpretation and two papers investigating the same biological question yet reaching opposite conclusions. We report a significant increase in students' self-efficacy in analyzing data from research papers, evaluating authors' conclusions, and designing experiments. Using our science-process skills test, we observe a statistically significant increase in students' ability to propose an experiment that matches the goal of investigation. We also detect gains in interpretation of controls and quantitative analysis of data. No statistically significant changes were observed in questions that tested the skills of interpretation, inference, and evaluation

    Digital mindsets: Teachers’ technology use in personal life and teaching

    Over the last few years there have been important calls for new literacies to become an integral part of language education. Yet traditional approaches to technology continue to persist in many contexts. Although the role of teachers in this problem has been acknowledged, little is known about how teachers ’ everyday digital literacy practices influence teaching with technologies. Informed by Literacy Studies, the paper reports the findings from a larger qualitative study and explores the relationship between technology use in personal and professional domains of three language teachers. The study found that the participants ’ digital mindsets, comprising assumptions about affordances of digital technologies, shaped the ways in which the participants used digital technologies within and beyond classrooms. New literacies required creative and elaborated assumptions about affordances; however, these understandings had different significance for the participants. The article explains why teaching new literacies continues to be challenging and suggests implications for teachers ’ professional learning and education and language pedagogy.     Three-terminal devices to examine single molecule conductance switching

    We report electronic transport measurements of single-molecule transistor devices incorporating bipyridyl-dinitro oligophenylene-ethynylene dithiol (BPDN-DT), a molecule known to exhibit conductance switching in other measurement configurations. We observe hysteretic conductance switching in 8% of devices with measurable currents, and find that dependence of the switching properties on gate voltage is rare when compared to other single-molecule transistor devices. This suggests that polaron formation is unlikely to be responsible for switching in these devices. We discuss this and alternative switching mechanisms.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures.     In some embodiments, the present invention provides methods of treating oxidative stress in a subject by administering a therapeutic composition to the subject. In some embodiments, the therapeutic composition comprises a carbon nanomaterial with anti-oxidant activity. In some embodiments, the anti-oxidant activity of the carbon nanomaterial corresponds to ORAC values between about 200 to about 15,000. In some embodiments, the administered carbon nanomaterials include at least one of single-walled nanotubes, double-walled nanotubes, triple-walled nanotubes, multi-walled nanotubes, ultra-short nanotubes, graphene, graphene nanoribbons, graphite, graphite oxide nanoribbons, carbon black, oxidized carbon black, hydrophilic carbon clusters, and combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the carbon nanomaterial is an ultra-short single-walled nanotube that is functionalized with a plurality of solubilizing groups. In some embodiments, the carbon nanomaterial is a polyethylene glycol functionalized hydrophilic carbon cluster (PEG-HCC). In some embodiments, the administered therapeutic compositions of the present invention may also include an active agent or targeting agent associated with the carbon nanomaterial.
