QCD thermodynamics with continuum extrapolated Wilson fermions II
We continue our investigation of 2+1 flavor QCD thermodynamics using
dynamical Wilson fermions in the fixed scale approach. Two additional pion
masses, approximately 440 MeV and 285 MeV, are added to our previous work at
545 MeV. The simulations were performed at 3 or 4 lattice spacings at each pion
mass. The renormalized chiral condensate, strange quark number susceptibility
and Polyakov loop is obtained as a function of the temperature and we observe a
decrease in the light chiral pseudo-critical temperature as the pion mass is
lowered while the pseudo-critical temperature associated with the strange quark
number susceptibility or the Polyakov loop is only mildly sensitive to the pion
mass. These findings are in agreement with previous continuum results obtained

Charmonium spectral functions from 2+1 flavour lattice QCD
Finite temperature charmonium spectral functions in the pseudoscalar and
vector channels are studied in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavours of dynamical
Wilson quarks, on fine isotropic lattices (with a lattice spacing of 0.057 fm),
with a non-physical pion mass of 545 MeV. The highest
temperature studied is approximately . Up to this temperature no
significant variation of the spectral function is seen in the pseudoscalar
channel. The vector channel shows some temperature dependence, which seems to
be consistent with a temperature dependent low frequency peak related to heavy
quark transport, plus a temperature independent term at \omega>0. These results

Regularity detection under stress: faster extraction of probability-based regularities
Acute stress can crucially influence learning and memory processes. One of the key processes underlying human learning and memory is the ability of our brain to rapidly detect and extract regularities from sensory input across time and space leading to effective predictive processing. Here, we aimed to get an in-depth look into the effect of stress on the acquisition of two aspects of regularity extraction. We examined whether and how stress affects the learning (1) of probability-based regularities and (2) of serial order-based regularities in the same experimental design, and (3) the explicit access to the acquired information. Considering that the acquisition of probability-based regularities is a relatively rapid process, we primarily focused on the early phase of the task. We induced stress with the Socially Evaluated Cold Pressor Test in 27 young adults, while 26 participants were enrolled in the control group. Salivary cortisol levels and subjective ratings of affective states showed successful stress induction. After the stress induction, we measured regularity extraction with the cued Alternating Serial Reaction Time task. We found that stress promoted the extraction of probability-based regularities measured by the learning performance in the early phase of the task and did not alter the learning of serial order-based regularities. Post-block reports showed weaker explicit access to the serial order-based regularities in the stress group. Our results can contribute to a process-level understanding on how stress alters learning and memory functions related to predictive processes
Egg activation events are regulated by the duration of a sustained [Ca2+]cyt signal in the mouse
AbstractAlthough the dynamics of oscillations of cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) play important roles in early mammalian development, the impact of the duration when [Ca2+]cyt is elevated is not known. To determine the sensitivity of fertilization-associated responses [i.e., cortical granule exocytosis, resumption of the cell cycle, Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) activity, recruitment of maternal mRNAs] and developmental competence of the parthenotes to the duration of a [Ca2+]cyt transient, unfertilized mouse eggs were subjected to a prolonged [Ca2+]cyt change for 15, 25, or 50 min by means of repetitive Ca2+ electropermeabilization at 2-min intervals. The initiation and completion of fertilization-associated responses are correlated with the duration of time in which the [Ca2+]cyt is elevated, with the exception that autonomous CaMKII activity is down-regulated with prolonged elevated [Ca2+]cyt. Activated eggs from 25- or 50-min treatments readily develop to the blastocyst stage with no sign of apoptosis or necrosis and some implant. Ca2+ influx into unfertilized eggs causes neither Ca2+ release from intracellular stores nor rapid removal of cytosolic Ca2+. Thus, the total Ca2+ signal input appears to be an important regulatory parameter that ensures completion of fertilization-associated events and oocytes have a surprising degree of tolerance for a prolonged change in [Ca2+]cyt
QCD thermodynamics with Wilson fermions
QCD is investigated at finite temperature using Wilson fermions in the fixed
scale approach. A 2+1 flavor stout and clover improved action is used at four
lattice spacings allowing for control over discretization errors. The light
quark masses in this first study are fixed to heavier than physical values. The
renormalized chiral condensate, quark number susceptibility and the Polyakov
loop is measured and the results are compared with the staggered formulation in
the fixed N_t approach. The Wilson results at the finest lattice spacing agree

Catches of Euxoa tritici in pheromone traps for Anarsia lineatella are due to the presence of (Z)-5-decenyl acetate as an impurity
Traps baited with the synthetic pheromone of Anarsia lineatella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) frequently captured also Euxoa tritici L. males (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in field tests in Hungary. As (E)-monounsaturated compounds are uncommon among sex attractants or pheromone components of Noctuidae, it was hypothesized that the Euxoa catches may have been due to impurities of the (Z) isomer in synthetic (E)-5-decenyl acetate, which is the major component in the pheromone lure of A. lineatella. Traps baited with synthetic (Z)-5-decenyl acetate captured large numbers of E. tritici, and the compound showed a clear dose-response effect. Reanalysis of the synthetic batch of (E)-5-decenyl acetate used in preparation of the A. lineatella lure showed the presence of 10% of the (Z) isomer. Traps baited with synthetic (Z)-5-decenyl acetate can be used in the future for detection and monitoring purposes of E. tritici, a widely distributed pest of cereals and other field crops. Visualization of mucosal field in HPV positive and negative oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas: combined genomic and radiology based 3D model
The aim of this study was to visualize the tumor propagation and surrounding mucosal field in radiography-based 3D model for advanced stage HNSCC and combine it with HPV genotyping and miRNA expression characterization of the visualized area. 25 patients with T1-3 clinical stage HNSCC were enrolled in mapping biopsy sampling. Biopsy samples were evaluated for HPV positivity and miR-21-5p, miR-143, miR-155, miR-221-5p expression in Digital Droplet PCR system. Significant miRNA expression differences of HPV positive tumor tissue biopsies were found for miR-21-5p, miR-143 and miR-221-5p compared to the HPV negative tumor biopsy series. Peritumoral mucosa showed patchy pattern alterations of miR-21-5p and miR-155 in HPV positive cases, while gradual change of miR-21-5p and miR-221-5p was seen in HPV negative tumors. In our study we found differences of the miRNA expression patterns among the HPV positive and negative tumorous tissues as well as the surrounding mucosal fields. The CT based 3D models of the cancer field and surrounding mucosal surface can be utilized to improve proper preoperative planning. Complex evaluation of HNSCC tissue organization field can elucidate the clinical and molecular differentiation of HPV positive and negative cases, and enhance effective organ saving therapeutic strategies
Ion acceleration with few cycle relativistic laser pulses from foil targets
Ion acceleration resulting from the interaction of 11 fs laser pulses of ~35
mJ energy with ultrahigh contrast (<10^-10), and 10^19 W/cm^2 peak intensity
with foil targets made of various materials and thicknesses at normal
(0-degree) and 45-degree laser incidence is investigated. The maximum energy of
the protons accelerated from both the rear and front sides of the target was
above 1 MeV. A conversion efficiency from laser pulse energy to proton beam is
estimated to be as high as ~1.4 % at 45-degree laser incidence using a 51
nm-thick Al target. The excellent laser contrast indicates the predominance of
vacuum heating via the Brunels effect as an absorption mechanism involving a
tiny pre-plasma of natural origin due to the Gaussian temporal laser pulse
shape. Experimental results are in reasonable agreement with theoretical
estimates where proton acceleration from the target rear into the forward
direction is well explained by a TNSA-like mechanism, while proton acceleration
from the target front into the backward direction can be explained by the
formation of a charged cavity in a tiny pre-plasma. The exploding Coulomb field
from the charged cavity also serves as a source for forward-accelerated ions at
