Molecular environment, reverberation, and radiation from the pulsar wind nebula in CTA 1

We estimate the molecular mass around CTA 1 using data from Planck and the Harvard CO survey. We observe that the molecular mass in the vicinity of the complex is not enough to explain the TeV emission observed by VERITAS, even under favorable assumptions for the cosmic-ray acceleration properties of the supernova remnant. This supports the idea that the TeV emission comes from the PWN. Here, we model the spectrum of the PWN at possible different stages of its evolution, including both the dynamics of the PWN and the SNR and their interaction via the reverse shock. We have included in the model the energy lost via radiation by particles and the particles escape when computing the pressure produced by the gas. This leads to an evolving energy partition, since for the same instantaneous sharing of the injection of energy provided by the rotational power, the field and the particles are affected differently by radiation and losses. We present the model, and study in detail how the spectrum of a canonical isolated PWN is affected during compression and re-expansion and how this may impact on the CTA 1 case. By exploring the phase-space of parameters that lead to radii in agreement with those observed, we then analyze different situations that might represent the current stage of the CTA 1 PWN, and discuss caveats and requirements of each one.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

In recent years it has assisted in almost all fields of knowledge, research, legislation and other cultural expressions, a strong interest in heritage and university heritage, conservation and dissemination. Likewise, it is also increasing the consideration of such assets beyond their own intrinsic cultural values, strengthening from different perspectives that a new interpretation and development of new formulas that combine training, research and dissemination of heritage as a research subject social and economic development. Based on this principle, the project "Virtual UCOMuseo" presented in this article, is inserted into this new conceptualization of heritage as a dynamic resource of research, culture and economy of the twenty-first century, by implementing a balanced combination between the integral property and use of ICTs

Cordoba in the Spanish Geographic Institute “Cartographic Notes” (1871-1900) and its rural habitat as a cartographic tool

The importance of the rural landscape and heritage is absolutely manifest. A great deal of academic literature highlights the significance of all sorts of rural settlements in Spain such as villages, cortijos (rural housing typical of the southernmost part of Spain), caseríos (small rural settlements formed of a few houses) and haciendas (rural estates surrounded by cattle and cultivated land.) However, these numerous values should be complemented with an acknowledgement of the meaning acquired by the rural habitat at the dawn of contemporary cartography. The aim of this study is to examine the technical perspective of the cartographic and topographic construction of the late 19th century, together with the relationship between the latter and the rural habitat as a cartographic resource in the first 1:50.000 topographic series of Spain´s National Geographic Institute. In this study, topographic itineraries designed between 1871 and 1893 have been consulted, as well as the results found in the minutas or “cartographic notes” for a selection of some of the municipalities in the province of Córdoba such as La Carlota, Conquista, Fernán Núñez, Palma del Río, Valsequillo and Zuheros. The final conclusions drawn from this research aspire to lay the foundations for a verified example of the cartographic meaning of the rural habitat as a tool for the development of the first topographic cartography of Córdoba and of Spain

The irrigable area of «El Guadalmellato», one of the other irrigable extensions of the basin of «El Guadalquivir» in the province of Cordoba, stands out for comprising in its extension the town centre of the city of Cordoba. This is situated almost in the centre of the irrigable strip of «El Guadalmellato», that stretches between the foothills of «Sierra Morena» and the flow of «El Guadalquivir», between the area of Alcolea in Cordoba, to the East and from the town centre of Almodóvar del Rio, to the West. The insertion of the city of Cordoba in the agricultural transformation of «El Guadalmellato» also entailed the inclusion of the traditional irrigated orchards which, in olden times, surrounded the city, samples of small and medium property in middle- class and aristrocat’s hands who almost totally disappeared during the decade of the sixties as the result of the urban expansion of the city.

Compact formulae, dynamics and radiation of charged particles under synchro-curvature losses

We consider the fundamental problem of charged particles moving along and around a curved magnetic field line, revising the synchro-curvature radiation formulae introduced by Cheng and Zhang (1996). We provide more compact expressions to evaluate the spectrum emitted by a single particle, identifying the key parameter that controls the transition between the curvature-dominated and the synchrotron-dominated regime. This parameter depends on the local radius of curvature of the magnetic field line, the gyration radius, and the pitch angle. We numerically solve the equations of motion for the emitting particle by considering self-consistently the radiative losses, and provide the radiated spectrum produced by a particle when an electric acceleration is balanced by its radiative losses, as it is assumed to happen in the outer gaps of pulsar's magnetospheres. We compute the average spectrum radiated throughout the particle trajectory finding that the slope of the spectrum before the peak depends on the location and size of the emission region. We show how this effect could then lead to a variety of synchro-curvature spectra. Our results reinforce the idea that the purely synchrotron or curvature losses are, in general, inadequate to describe the radiative reaction on the particle motion, and the spectrum of emitted photons. Finally, we discuss the applicability of these calculations to different astrophysical scenarios.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal.
