Novel personal care products are necessary to cope with the growing market demand for sustainable green products. In this context, this work deals with the formulation and fundamental physicochemical and rheological characterization of different natural personal care products using bioactive fractions from Chondrus crispus red macroalgae extracted under optimized green conditions. Body milks, body oils and shampoos were supplemented with soluble extracts with antioxidant features recovered after hydrothermal (200 °C) and microwave (170 °C)- and ultrasound (80 °C)-assisted extraction of the red macroalgae used as raw material. Formulated products were also compared with those prepared using (±)-α-tocopherol and butylhydroxytoluene standards. Body scrubs were formulated with the remaining solids (<2.25 %) after microwave hydrodiffusion and gravidity treatment of the macroalgae. Results indicated that selected extracts provided personal care products with similar or even better physicochemical, color and viscous features than those supplemented with (±)-α-tocopherol or butylhydroxytoluene commercial antioxidants. Rheological profiles indicated that it is possible to develop personal care products with adequate viscous behavior (102–105 mPa s, at 1 s−1), comparable with their synthetic counterparts. To conclude, the addition of antioxidant extracts led to lower apparent viscosity values suggesting an advantage from the skin applicability point of view, jointly with the absence of both the hysteresis phenomenon and water syneresis of the proposed formulations.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. A new dissymmetric thiosemicarbazone ligand containing a hydrazonequinoline arm, H2AMeTsQ, and its chloride salt, [H3AMeTsQ]Cl, were synthesized. Nine new complexes of cadmium and mercury with different structural characteristics were obtained under different reaction conditions as the ligand charge can be controlled by varying the amount of base. 113Cd and 199Hg NMR spectroscopy together with X-ray diffraction indicated that the complexes form monomeric and dimeric structures and even a coordination polymer. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that both protonated and neutral forms of the ligand were fluorescent as well as some of their cadmium and mercury derivatives. The fluorescence intensity decreased upon complexation and in some complexes a shift of the emission maximum was also observedWe thank César J. Gold(III) compounds have received increasing attention in cancer research. Three gold complexes of general formula [AuIIIL]Cl, where L is benzil bis(thiosemicarbazonate), compound 1, benzil bis(4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazonate), compound 2, or benzil bis(4-cyclohexyl-3-thiosemicarbazonate), compound 3, have been synthesized and fully characterized, including the X-ray crystal structure of compound 3, confirming square-planar geometry around the gold(III) centre. Compound 1 showed moderate cytotoxicity and accumulation in MCF7 breast cancer cells but did not inhibit thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) activity and did not induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Compound 2, the least cytotoxic, was found to be capable of modestly inhibiting TrxR activity and produced low levels of ROS in the MCF7 cell line. The most cytotoxic compound, 3, had the highest cellular accumulation and its distribution pattern showed a clear preference for the cytosol and mitochondria of MCF7 cells. It readily hampered intracellular TrxR activity leading to a dramatic alteration of the cellular redox state and to the induction of cell deathThis research was supported by the EC (FP7-PEOPLE-2013-CIG, no. 631396), the MINECO of Spain (RYC-2012-11231, and CTQ2014-60100-R), the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (PS09/00963), and the Comunidad Autonoma de Madrid (S2013/MIT-2850

Synthesis, characterization, in vitro cytotoxic activity and molecular docking of dinuclear gold(I) complexes with terephthalaldehyde bis(thiosemicarbazones)

Four new bis(thiosemicarbazones) were synthesized and, by reaction with AuI, four dinuclear gold(I) complexes were obtained. Cytotoxic activity of both the ligands and the complexes against NCI-H460 (lung), A2780 and A2780cisR (ovarian) cancer cell lines and normal renal LLC-PK1 cells has been evaluated. The results indicate that the ligands do not show antiproliferative activity in the cell lines evaluated and the NCI-H460 line is only sensitive to the complex bearing cyclohexyl substituents. On the other hand, the four complexes display high cytotoxic activity towards A2780 and A2780 cisR and the complex with thiosemicarbazide could circumvent resistance to cisplatin. By contrast, none of the complexes show significant inhibition against the normal renal cell line LLC-PK1. Docking studies with carboxamide ribonucleotide formyltransferase (AICARFT) and cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK2) for lung and ovarian cancer, respectively, show that the best binding affinity corresponds to complex 4, which is in agreement with the in vitro cytotoxicityThe authors thank MICINN, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, for funding (Project PS09/00963) and Red de Excelencia MetalBio (CTQ2017-90802-REDT

"This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: Applied Organometallic Chemistry 33.2 (2019): e4700, which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1002/aoc.4700. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived Versions"Six organotin (IV) complexes with two ligands derived from 2,3‐butanedione and thiosemicarbazide have been synthesized and fully characterized by several spectroscopic techniques, including 119Sn NMR and single crystal X‐ray diffraction. Reactions of the ligand diacetyl‐2‐(thiosemicarbazone)‐3‐(3‐ hydroxy‐2‐naphthohydrazone), L1 H2, with SnR2Cl2 (R = Me, Bu, Ph) lead to the obtaining of complexes 1–3 with general formula [SnR2L1 ] (R = Me 1, R = Bu 2, R = Ph 3), in which the ligand is doubly deprotonated and behaves as a N2SO donor, whereas from the reactions of diacetyl‐2‐thiosemicarbazone, HATs, with the same organotin precursors any complex could be isolated. By contrast, reaction of HATs with SnR3Cl induces the ligand cyclization to form a 1,2,4‐triazine‐3‐thione that binds to the metal as a monoanionic donor in a mono or bidentate manner to form compounds 4–6 with formula [SnR3L2 ] (R = Me 4, R = Bu 5, R = Ph 6). The antimicrobial activity of the ligands and the six complexes was tested towards bacteria and fungi, including clinical isolated strains. The results show that the ligands are devoid of activity, except HATs that displays activity against Bacillus subtilis. Conversely, the complexes exhibit good antimicrobial properties against Gram positive and negative bacteria, yeasts and moulds. The best results are obtained for complexes [SnBu3L2 ] 5 and [SnPh3L2 ] 6, indicating that their more lipophilic nature could play an important role in the ease of microbial cell penetration. In some cases, these complexes display similar or higher activity than that of ampicillin and miconazole, used as antibacterial and antifungal positive controls, respectively. Docking study with DHPS protein (S. aureus) has shown that out of six drugs, the compound 6 has the best binding affinity (−8.5 Kcal/mol)Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación, Grant/Award Number: CTQ2017‐90802‐RED

Children’s nutritional status is vulnerable to food crises, especially in rural areas. Likewise, lack of knowledge about food and unhealthy consumption habits increase the risk of malnutrition. Focused food education and the use of traditional local crops, such as amaranth, can benefit nutrition and food security, enriching the local food culture. The objectives of this study were to promote the consumption of amaranth through food education in order to observe its effect on children’s nutritional indicators and present the methodology implemented to promote the use of this food resource in the study area. A mixed, explanatory and longitudinal design was proposed. A baseline evaluation was carried out for nine children between three and eight years of age from Tochimilco, Puebla, who consumed 20 g/day of popped amaranth as a complement to homemade dishes for five months; individual food workshops were implemented and anthropometry and consumption patterns were monitored. By means of food education focused on families, amaranth became conspicuous and was consumed as part of the regular diet; even during the health pandemic, it remained available, accessible and stable in the family food scheme. Its consumption and the variety of dishes increased following food education, in all cases. Regarding the anthropometric indicators, seven cases improved and the final diagnosis was healthy, but two cases were found to be overweight at the end. It was concluded that focused food education helps incorporate amaranth into regular food and makes it possible to improve the nutritional status of children even during food crises.
