Background
The vertiginous pace with which modern medicine advances, can seem overwhelming to students and young doctors.
Aim of the study
To reappraise an oration by William Osler delivered to medical students at the point of their graduation.
Methods
Narrative review.
Results
Osler emphasised the Art of Detachment, the Virtue of Method, the Quality of Thoroughness and the Grace of Humility, which he considers the basic pillars on which a successful medical practice is achieved, Osler's words serve as a guiding light for physicians struggling with the demands of twenty first century medicine

Dating the dead: New radiocarbon dates from the lower Ica Valley, south coast Peru
This article presents radiocarbon dates from human bone samples (n = 13) from seven pre-Columbian cemeteries in the Samaca and Ullujaya Basins of the lower Ica Valley, south coast of Peru, spanning from the end of the Early Horizon to the Inca Late Horizon. These contexts have been severely looted. Yet, in all cases, their putative dating by material culture remains is confirmed by these 14C dates. This shows that such disturbed contexts, sadly typical of the Peruvian coast, can nonetheless still yield valuable bioarchaeological and burial practice data. These dates elaborate upon an emerging picture of the absolute dating of the cultural phases of the wider south coast region, in particular casting new light on the poorly understood Middle Horizon to Late Intermediate period transition. A paucity of archaeological data for this 3-century period has been taken as evidence of some sort of environmentally or socially induced lacuna. Evaluation of the Application of Double Taxation on International Services Transactions From Brazilian Airlines
Globalization tends to stimulate transactions between different countries by offering products and services with different quality and prices. During the negotiations, there is a tax over payment remitted abroad that involves agreements between countries. This research project aims to understand all the double taxation agreements between Brazil and foreign countries inserting them into the decision making process of hiring a service abroad. Using the Business Process Management methodology it could be seen that double taxation is not considered today on the study of hiring a service abroad, which can lead to an increase on company’s costs. This project proposes a change on the process done today by including the utilization of a new tool fed with all the different types of agreements valid in Brazil to simplify the decision of the procurement team. The tool is created and available to be implemented within companies with estimated saving around USD 33MM per year
Slip-flow lattice-Boltzmann simulations in ducts and porous media: A full rehabilitation of spurious velocities
Slip flow in ducts and porous media is simulated using lattice-Boltzmann method incorporated with interfacial force models. The dependence of the results on the viscosity, LBM scheme (D3Q15 and D3Q19) and the relaxation time model (single- or multirelaxation time) is investigated. The severity of spurious velocities (arisen from classic and advanced interfacial force models) is discussed that leads to entirely nonphysical results for whole flow rates (0.027 (kappa/kappa(NS))square ducts > (kappa/kappa(NS))porous media (where kappa is the permeability and NS denotes no-slip)
SPH approach for simulating hydro-mechanical processes with large deformations and variable permeabilities
A simulation framework based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is introduced to model problems involving the interaction between flowing water and soil deformation. Changes in soil porosity and associated permeability are automatically adjusted within this framework. The framework’s capabilities are presented and discussed for three geotechnical problems caused by flowing water. The comparison between simulation results and experiments shows that SPH with the proposed concept is capable of quantitatively simulating the hydro-mechanical processes beyond limit state with satisfactory agreement. To improve the computational stability, a correction procedure and a new algorithm for the selection of the optimal time step are introduced
