    Sweet onions brought in nearly $70 million in 1998. Sweet onions have a soft bulb which makes them susceptible to injury if handled too roughly. Once injured, invasion by pathogens tends to render the bulbs unusable except for quick sale. They were harvested by hand until about ten years ago when efforts were begun to develop a mechanical harvester. Also, at that time, work was underway to develop a way of storing part of the crop so as to extend the market window beyond the traditional 6-8 weeks. Low temperature and low oxygen atmosphere conditions proved to be the most suitable. In 1998 and 1999, sweet onions were hand and machine harvested. They were stored for 30 weeks to determine the practicality of extending the market window. Storability of onions in bulk from the two harvest methods were compared using a mixed model analysis. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the reliance on technologies like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, creating a unique backdrop. Amid the elevated anxiety surrounding the adoption of "new" technology, we hypothesize that trust within the workplace will play a pivotal role in moderating the link between technological self-efficacy and OCB. Our research aims to shed light on this uncharted territory, offering insights into how trust shapes employees' responses to technological challenges, particularly in the context of a global crisis

The different orders of magnitude of the jump in resistivity in dependence on the concentration of oxygen vacancies as well as the low-temperature resistance minimum in high-resistivity samples are reproduced quantitatively.     Intellectual Property and Public Health – A White Paper

    On October 26, 2012, the University of Akron School of Law’s Center for Intellectual Property and Technology hosted its Sixth Annual IP Scholars Forum. In attendance were thirteen legal scholars with expertise and an interest in IP and public health who met to discuss problems and potential solutions at the intersection of these fields. This report summarizes this discussion by describing the problems raised, areas of agreement and disagreement between the participants, suggestions and solutions made by participants and the subsequent evaluations of these suggestions and solutions. Led by the moderator, participants at the Forum focused generally on three broad questions. First, are there alternatives to either the patent system or specific patent doctrines that can provide or help provide sufficient incentives for health-related innovation? Second, is health information being used proprietarily and if so, is this type of protection appropriate? Third, does IP conflict with other non-IP values that are important in health and how does or can IP law help resolve these conflicts? This report addresses each of these questions in turn

    Giant infrared intensity of the Peierls mode at the neutral-ionic phase transition

    We present exact diagonalization results on a modified Peierls-Hubbard model for the neutral-ionic phase transition. The ground state potential energy surface and the infrared intensity of the Peierls mode point to a strong, non-linear electron-phonon coupling, with effects that are dominated by the proximity to the electronic instability rather than by electronic correlations. The huge infrared intensity of the Peierls mode at the ferroelectric transition is related to the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of mixed-stack organic crystals.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Systemic inflammatory response syndrome after major abdominal surgery predicted by early upregulation of TLR4 and TLR5

    OBJECTIVES To study innate immune pathways in patients undergoing hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery to understand mechanisms leading to enhanced inflammatory responses and identifying biomarkers of adverse clinical consequences. BACKGROUND Patients undergoing major abdominal surgery are at risk of life-threatening systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis. Early identification of at-risk patients would allow tailored postoperative care and improve survival. METHODS Two separate cohorts of patients undergoing major hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery were studied (combined n = 69). Bloods were taken preoperatively, on day 1 and day 2 postoperatively. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells and serum were separated and immune phenotype and function assessed ex vivo. RESULTS Early innate immune dysfunction was evident in 12 patients who subsequently developed SIRS (postoperative day 6) compared with 27 who did not, when no clinical evidence of SIRS was apparent (preoperatively or days 1 and 2). Serum interleukin (IL)-6 concentration and monocyte Toll-like receptor (TLR)/NF-κB/IL-6 functional pathways were significantly upregulated and overactive in patients who developed SIRS (P < 0.0001). Interferon α-mediated STAT1 phosphorylation was higher preoperatively in patients who developed SIRS. Increased TLR4 and TLR5 gene expression in whole blood was demonstrated in a separate validation cohort of 30 patients undergoing similar surgery. Expression of TLR4/5 on monocytes, particularly intermediate CD14CD16 monocytes, on day 1 or 2 predicted SIRS with accuracy 0.89 to 1.0 (areas under receiver operator curves). CONCLUSIONS These data demonstrate the mechanism for IL-6 overproduction in patients who develop postoperative SIRS and identify markers that predict patients at risk of SIRS 5 days before the onset of clinical signs

    Excitation Spectrum of One-dimensional Extended Ionic Hubbard Model

    We use Perturbative Continuous Unitary Transformations (PCUT) to study the one dimensional Extended Ionic Hubbard Model (EIHM) at half-filling in the band insulator region. The extended ionic Hubbard model, in addition to the usual ionic Hubbard model, includes an inter-site nearest-neighbor (n.n.) repulsion, VV. We consider the ionic potential as unperturbed part of the Hamiltonian, while the hopping and interaction (quartic) terms are treated as perturbation. We calculate total energy and ionicity in the ground state. Above the ground state, (i) we calculate the single particle excitation spectrum by adding an electron or a hole to the system. (ii) the coherence-length and spectrum of electron-hole excitation are obtained. Our calculations reveal that for V=0, there are two triplet bound state modes and three singlet modes, two anti-bound states and one bound state, while for finite values of VV there are four excitonic bound states corresponding to two singlet and two triplet modes. The major role of on-site Coulomb repulsion UU is to split singlet and triplet collective excitation branches, while VV tends to pull the singlet branches below the continuum to make them bound states.Comment: 10 eps figure
