Student-Led Book Clubs Support Reading Engagement in Primary Grades This Capstone project was created to support primary grade teachers in learning about student-led book clubs as a format of literacy instruction. The author set out to answer the question: how can student-led book clubs support the development of reading engagement in primary grades? As an elementary teacher responsible for creating an engaging classroom, the author feels strongly that when students are able to make meaningful connections from school work to real life, learning is more authentic and therefore supports students in building skills for lifelong learning. One intriguing format to create these connections and support student engagement in learning is through student-led book clubs. Research concludes that small-group, student-led book clubs have the opportunity to increase reading engagement. Research also identifies that book clubs have the ability to support ownership over student learning, strengthen listening and speaking skills, as well as increase students’ understanding of the text. Using this information, the author created a website for teachers to learn how to implement small-group, student-led book clubs in primary grades based on researched scaffolds

    Cool and Warm Season Climate Signals in Tree Rings from North America

    Earlywood (EW) and latewood (LW) ring-width chronologies have become an increasingly important proxy in paleoclimate reconstructions. These subannual variables can provide estimates of past hydroclimate variability for seasonal windows that total ring-widths cannot resolve. The strength of the relationship between EW and LW series may influence what type of paleoclimate information is embedded within the tree-ring series. High correlations (\u3e 0.70) between EW and LW are recorded for much of the continent but the magnitude of correlation varies greatly across space and species boundaries. Using four LW chronologies from shortleaf pine, the North American conifer species displaying the lowest EW-LW correlation, a reconstruction of summer atmospheric moisture balance spanning the years 1685-2015 was produced for the central United States. A second reconstruction, based on ten EW and total-ring width chronologies from three other species, estimates May soil moisture for the same period. The relationship between reconstructions displays strong decadal swings in both instrumental and reconstructed data that could potentially improve forecasting skill of summer rainfall. The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) appears to dictate the changing persistence in seasonal hydroclimate and the reconstructions suggest that this ocean-atmosphere forcing has been a stable feature of North American climate dynamics over the past 300 years. Finally, this dissertation investigates the temporal stability of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signals in the North American tree-ring network in relation to AMO phasing. Numerous reconstructions of ENSO have been produced relying on tree-ring chronologies from the American Southwest as predictors, however, the teleconnection between ENSO and local hydroclimate has varied in strength and spatial expression during the 20th and early 21st century. There is a significant loss of tree-ring records exhibiting significant correlations with ENSO during subperiods associated with the negative phase of the AMO. A new reconstruction, relying solely on a subset of chronologies with time-stable ENSO signals, was produced. When compared to the North American Drought Atlas for the past 350 years, similar expansions and retractions of ENSO influence from the core region of northern Mexico and the border states of the United States seen in the instrumental period/data are recorded

    Hepatic fibrogenesis requires sympathetic neurotransmitters

    Background and aims: Hepatic stellate cells (HSC) are activated by liver injury to become proliferative fibrogenic myofibroblasts. This process may be regulated by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) but the mechanisms involved are unclear. Methods: We studied cultured HSC and intact mice with liver injury to test the hypothesis that HSC respond to and produce SNS neurotransmitters to promote fibrogenesis. Results: HSC expressed adrenoceptors, catecholamine biosynthetic enzymes, released norepinephrine (NE), and were growth inhibited by α- and β-adrenoceptor antagonists. HSC from dopamine β-hydroxylase deficient (Dbh(−/−)) mice, which cannot make NE, grew poorly in culture and were rescued by NE. Inhibitor studies demonstrated that this effect was mediated via G protein coupled adrenoceptors, mitogen activated kinases, and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase. Injury related fibrogenic responses were inhibited in Dbh(−/−) mice, as evidenced by reduced hepatic accumulation of α-smooth muscle actin(+ve) HSC and decreased induction of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) and collagen. Treatment with isoprenaline rescued HSC activation. HSC were also reduced in leptin deficient ob/ob mice which have reduced NE levels and are resistant to hepatic fibrosis. Treating ob/ob mice with NE induced HSC proliferation, upregulated hepatic TGF-β1 and collagen, and increased liver fibrosis. Conclusions: HSC are hepatic neuroglia that produce and respond to SNS neurotransmitters to promote hepatic fibrosis

    Gastrointestinal involvement in chronic graft-versus-host disease: A clinicopathologic study

    AbstractThe original histopathologic description of chronic graft-versus-host disease (CGVHD) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract was from autopsy series. There is little information on the evaluation of living patients with CGVHD and GI symptoms. We reviewed data on 40 consecutive patients with CGVHD and persistent GI symptoms who underwent endoscopic examinations. The diagnosis of CGVHD in these 40 patients was made on the basis of clinical criteria and confirmed by histology of other involved organs in 70%. Patients had progressive (in 19 patients, or 48%), quiescent (in 11, or 27%) or de novo–type (in 10, or 25%) onset of their CGVHD. Four groups were defined based on the following histologic criteria: (1) consistent with acute GI GVHD if there was marked apoptosis with or without cryptitis, (2) suggestive of acute GI GVHD if there was scattered apoptosis with or without cryptitis, (3) suggestive of chronic GI GVHD if there were at least 2 histologic indicators of chronicity such as fibrosis and significant crypt distortion, and (4) no histologic evidence of GVHD. Results of microbiologic, radiologic, and malabsorption studies, if performed, were also retrieved. Median time from diagnosis of CGVHD to GI endoscopy was 4.5 months (0-109 months). The major GI symptoms at the time of endoscopy were diarrhea, abdominal pain/cramping, nausea/vomiting, weight loss, dysphagia, and early satiety. The endoscopic examination was nonspecific for the diagnosis of GI GVHD except for diffuse mucosal sloughing. Based on the histologic criteria in 22 patients with biopsies, 13 cases (59%) were considered to have acute GI GVHD, and 3 cases (14%) were felt to show possible chronic GI GVHD; changes of both acute and chronic GVHD were seen in 6 (27%) cases. GI dysmotility was diagnosed in 7 (18%) patients, including 2 of the patients who had histologic changes suggestive of chronic GVHD. Other causes of the GI symptoms included infection, drug side effect, and malabsorption. In conclusion, GI involvement by acute GVHD appears to be a major cause of persistent GI symptoms in patients with chronic GVHD.     Fifty years of impact on liver pathology:a history of the Gnomes

    Professional societies play a major role in medicine and science. The societies tend to be large with well-developed administrative structures. An additional model, however, is based on small groups of experts who meet regularly in an egalitarian model in order to discuss disease-specific scientific and medical problems. In order to illustrate the effectiveness of this model, the history and practices are examined of a long-standing successful example, the International Liver Pathology Group, better known as the Gnomes. The history shows that groups such as the Gnomes offer a number of important benefits not available in larger societies and nurturing such groups advances science and medicine in meaningful ways. The success of the Gnomes’ approach provides a road map for future small scientific groups

    Liver transplantation for alcoholic cirrhosis: Long term follow-up and impact of disease recurrence

    Background. Alcoholic liver disease has emerged as a leading indication for hepatic transplantation, although it is a controversial use of resources. We aimed to examine all aspects of liver transplantation associated with alcohol abuse. Methods. Retrospective cohort analysis of 123 alcoholic patients with a median of 7 years follow-up at one center. Results. In addition to alcohol, 43 (35%) patients had another possible factor contributing to cirrhosis. Actuarial patient and graft survival rates were, respectively, 84% and 81% (1 year); 72% and 66% (5 years); and 63% and 59% (7 years). After transplantation, 18 patients (15%) manifested 21 noncutaneous de novo malignancies, which is significantly more than controls (P=0.0001); upper aerodigestive squamous carcinomas were over-represented (P=0.03). Thirteen patients had definitely relapsed and three others were suspected to have relapsed. Relapse was predicted by daily ethanol consumption (P=0.0314), but not by duration of pretransplant sobriety or explant histology. No patient had alcoholic hepatitis after transplantation and neither late onset acute nor chronic rejection was significantly increased. Multiple regression analyses for predictors of graft failure identified major biliary/vascular complications (P=0.01), chronic bile duct injury on biopsy (P=0.002), and pericellular fibrosis on biopsy (P=0.05); graft viral hepatitis was marginally significant (P=0.07) on univariate analysis. Conclusions. Alcoholic liver disease is an excellent indication for liver transplantation in those without coexistent conditions. Recurrent alcoholic liver disease alone is not an important cause of graft pathology or failure. Potential recipients should be heavily screened before transplantation for coexistent conditions (e.g., hepatitis C, metabolic diseases) and other target-organ damage, especially aerodigestive malignancy, which are greater causes of morbidity and mortality than is recurrent alcohol liver disease
