Stretching and challenging the boundaries of law: varieties of knowledge in biotechnologies regulation

The paper addresses the question of adaptation of existing regulatory frameworks in the face of innovation in biotechnologies, and specifically the roles played in this by various expert knowledge practices. We identify two overlapping ideal types of adaptation: first, the stretching and maintenance of a pre-existing legal framework, and second, a breaking of existing classifications and establishment of a novel regime. We approach this issue by focusing on varieties of regulatory knowledge which, contributing to and parting of political legitimacy, in principle enable the making of legally binding decisions about risks and benefits of technologies. We base the discussion around two case studies, one of animal biotechnology ethical regulation, the other of ‘advanced therapy’ medicinal product regulation, both in the context of European Union frameworks. Specifically, we explore the knowledge configurations constituting expert committees and other institutional formations of expert regulatory knowledge in their political context. We show that where sectoral and moral boundaries are challenged, different modes of regulatory knowledge beyond scientific forms – legal, procedural, moral, economic and industrial – can shape regulatory innovations either by maintenance of regimes through commensuration and stretching, or through differentiation and separation creating new frameworks. We conclude that establishing an essential techno-scientific difference between pre-existing and novel technologies does not in itself require new regulatory structures, and that the regulatory strategy that is followed will be determined by a combination of different forms of knowledge

Investigating human/animal relations in science, culture and work

How can we make sense of the ambiguous and historically shifting characteristics of human/animal relations? How can these relations be analysed in terms of power and hierarchies intersecting with gender, race, class and nationality?  This collection of essays, derived from a Nordic workshop on the matter, contributes to the growing interdisciplinary field of human/animal studies (HAS). The book contains 17 articles, divided into three sections: Thinking with Animals, Animal-Human Culture and Scientific Animals. All the papers included are work in progress – from ongoing or planned projects – in the shape of short contributions. This volume thus constitutes a “smörgåsbord” of lively and vivid research in the area of human/animal relations that goes on throughout the Nordic countries

Discussions on biology : Gender scholars talk about bodily matters

During recent recades, understandings of embodiment and the body have been of a crucial concern in gender research. Accordingly, gender studies' relationship to "the biological" has become an increasingly urgent question. In this publication, Tora Holmberg examines and illuminates the boundaries between the social and the biological, between nature and culture, between sex and gender, and the different theoretical debates in gender research. she does this through discussions with prominent Swedish gender researchers, who have taken an interest in corporeality and biology. Together they look nto the problems posed by the different approaches and the possibilities for transgression

Detta föredrag vid Sociologidagarna är av tradition lite av en avgående ordförandes bekännelser, en möjlighet att breda ut sig inför en något så när vänligt inställd publik: låt människan prata, snart är vi av med henne. När jag för någon månad sedan började fundera över tema så tänkte jag förstås på... hästar. Eller snarare på samspelet mellan häst och människa och hur det kan begreppsliggöra sociologin som ämne, och sociologiserandet som praktik. Därmed titeln ”Sociologiska gångarter”. Detta kryptiska ämne ska jag utveckla. Först pratar jag om takt, frekvens och energi i olika gångarter för att undersöka hur vi kan förstå rytm. Sedan om sociologiserandet och dess olika tidsregimer. I ett tredje steg lägger jag ihop rytm och tid för att hävda att sociologins faser kan förstås med hjälp av redan befintliga gångarter men också genom en alldeles egen: en gångart i ständig spänning mellan den upprepade alldagliga aktiviteten och den oregelbundet uppblossande energin.Title in WoS: Sociological gaits 2018 Lectures from Sociology Days 2018</p
