Antimicrobial Susceptibilities of Aerobic Isolates from Respiratory Samples of Young New Zealand Horses
3rd Annual IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, ECCE 2011, Phoenix, AZ, 17-22 September 2011This paper presents a method of mitigating the transient overshoots of DC-DC converters operating with large load disturbances. The method involves a small auxiliary power circuit with a complementary control scheme that provides a smooth absorption and release of excess energy from and to the main DC-DC converter in the events of large load changes. This control mechanism interactively mitigates the large transient overshoots which would otherwise appear at the converter output. Since the control scheme involves an adjustable-energy-storage feature, the proposed solution is effective for any level of step-load change within a pre-specified range.Department of Electronic and Information EngineeringRefereed conference pape
Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Kinase Domain Region Receptor Are Involved in Both Seminiferous Cord Formation and Vascular Development During Testis Morphogenesis in the Rat
Morphological male sex determination is dependent on migration of endothelial and preperitubular cells from the adjacent mesonephros into the developing testis. Our hypothesis is that VEGFA and its receptor KDR are necessary for both testicular cord formation and neovascularization. The Vegfa gene has 8 exons with many splice variants. Vegfa120, Vegfa164, and Vegfa188 mRNA isoforms were detected on Embryonic Day (E) 13.5 (plug date = E0) in the rat. Vegfa120, Vegfa144, Vegfa164, Vegfa188, and Vegfa205 mRNA were detected at E18 and Postnatal Day 3 (P3). Kdr mRNA was present on E13.5, whereas Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 receptor (Flt1) mRNA was not detected until E18. VEGFA protein was localized to Sertoli cells at cord formation and KDR to germ and interstitial cells. The VEGFA signaling inhibitors SU1498 (40 μM) and VEGFR-TKI (8 μM) inhibited cord formation in E13 testis cultures with 90% reduced vascular density (P \u3c 0.01) in VEGFR-TKI-treated organs. Furthermore, Je-11 (10 μM), an antagonist to VEGFA, also perturbed cord formation and inhibited vascular density by more than 50% (P \u3c 0.01). To determine signal transduction pathways involved in VEGFA’s regulation of testis morphogenesis, E13 testis were treated with LY 294002 (15 μM), a phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway inhibitor, resulting in inhibition of both vascular density (46%) and cord formation. Thus, we support our hypothesis and conclude that VEGFA, secreted by the Sertoli cell, is involved in both neovascularization and cord formation and potentially acts through the PI3K pathway during testis morphogenesis to elicit its effects

Infrared Diameter of IRC+10216 Determined from Lunar Occultations
Lunar occultations of IRC+10216 have been used to determine the size of the regions emitting 2.2-, 3.5-, 4.8-, and 10-μ radiation. The results are interpreted as the first direct measurement of the physical size of a dust shell surrounding a late-type star
Amyloid β peptides are differentially vulnerable to preanalytical surface exposure, an effect incompletely mitigated by the use of ratios
INTRODUCTION: We tested the hypothesis that the amyloid β (Aβ) peptide ratios are more stable than Aβ42 alone when biofluids are exposed to two preanalytical conditions known to modify measurable Aβ concentration.
METHODS: Human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and culture media (CM) from human cortical neurons were exposed to a series of volumes and polypropylene surfaces. Aβ42, Aβ40, and Aβ38 peptide concentrations were measured using a multiplexed electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Data were analyzed using mixed models in R.
RESULTS: Decrease of measurable Aβ peptide concentrations was exaggerated in longer peptides, affecting the Aβ42:Aβ40 and Aβ42:Aβ38 ratios. However, the effect size of surface treatment was reduced in Aβ peptide ratios versus Aβ42 alone. For Aβ42:Aβ40, the effect was reduced by approximately 50% (volume) and 75% (transfer) as compared to Aβ42 alone.
DISCUSSION: Use of Aβ ratios, in conjunction with concentrations, may mitigate confounding factors and assist the clinical diagnostic process for Alzheimer's disease
Amyloid precursor protein processing in human neurons with an allelic series of the PSEN1 intron 4 deletion mutation and total presenilin-1 knockout
Mutations in presenilin-1 (PSEN1), encoding the catalytic subunit of the amyloid precursor protein-processing enzyme γ-secretase, cause familial Alzheimer’s disease. However, the mechanism of disease is yet to be fully understood and it remains contentious whether mutations exert their effects predominantly through gain or loss of function. To address this question, we generated an isogenic allelic series for the PSEN1 mutation intron 4 deletion; represented by control, heterozygous and homozygous mutant induced pluripotent stem cells in addition to a presenilin-1 knockout line. Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cortical neurons reveal reduced, yet detectable amyloid-beta levels in the presenilin-1 knockout line, and a mutant gene dosage-dependent defect in amyloid precursor protein processing in PSEN1 intron 4 deletion lines, consistent with reduced processivity of γ-secretase. The different effects of presenilin-1 knockout and the PSEN1 intron 4 deletion mutation on amyloid precursor protein-C99 fragment accumulation, nicastrin maturation and amyloid-beta peptide generation support distinct consequences of familial Alzheimer’s disease-associated mutations and knockout of presenilin-1 on the function of γ-secretase
Incommensurate Charge Density Waves in the adiabatic Hubbard-Holstein model
The adiabatic, Holstein-Hubbard model describes electrons on a chain with
step interacting with themselves (with coupling ) and with a classical
phonon field \f_x (with coupling \l). There is Peierls instability if the
electronic ground state energy F(\f) as a functional of \f_x has a minimum
which corresponds to a periodic function with period , where
is the Fermi momentum. We consider irrational so that
the CDW is {\it incommensurate} with the chain. We prove in a rigorous way in
the spinless case, when \l,U are small and {U\over\l} large, that a)when
the electronic interaction is attractive there is no Peierls instability
b)when the interaction is repulsive there is Peierls instability in the
sense that our convergent expansion for F(\f), truncated at the second order,
has a minimum which corresponds to an analytical and periodic
\f_x. Such a minimum is found solving an infinite set of coupled
self-consistent equations, one for each of the infinite Fourier modes of
\f_x.Comment: 16 pages, 1 picture. To appear Phys. Rev.
Strong damping of phononic heat current by magnetic excitations in SrCu_2(BO_3)_2
Measurements of the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature and
magnetic field in the 2D dimer spin system SrCu(BO) are presented.
In zero magnetic field the thermal conductivity along and perpendicular to the
magnetic planes shows a pronounced double-peak structure as a function of
temperature. The low-temperature maximum is drastically suppressed with
increasing magnetic field. Our quantitative analysis reveals that the heat
current is due to phonons and that the double-peak structure arises from
pronounced resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations.Comment: a bit more than 4 pages, 2 figures included; minor changes to improve

Ageing, masculinity and Parkinson's disease: Embodied perspectives
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) presents as an illness which predominantly affects older men. However older men’s lived experiences of PD, including how they are influenced by age and gender relations has seen little empirical study. Drawing on Watson’s (2000) male body schema, this paper explores PD’s effects on men’s bodies, alongside how men engage with masculinities and ageing in order to make meaning from these experiences. Data is presented from 30 narrative and semi structured interviews with 15 men of various ages who were living with PD. Findings suggest that PD threatens a pragmatic embodiment expressed through men’s everyday occupations; a visceral embodiment located in difficulties with the body’s basic movements and intimate functions and an experiential embodiment concerned with emotions and sensations within and about the body. In addition, each dimension of men’s embodiment also intersected with the ageing process, a process also shaped in turn by broader social and cultural concerns regarding the positions and possibilities of men’s lives as they move through the life course. This paper concludes by discussing the implications of gender and ageing in understanding men’s experiences of PD
