Exporting the developmental state: Japan’s economic diplomacy in the Arctic

    Get PDF
Japan remains a developmental state where the state guides and oversees economic development, and the strong bureaucracy and businesses in turn complement each other in leading and shaping policies to achieve developmental goals. Japan retains the institutions deemed necessary to enhance the cooperative behaviour of the bureaucracy, businesses and politicians, and norms about what is important in order for an interventionist state to implement policies aimed at achieving economic development and the autonomy of the state. Externally, Japan has practised economic diplomacy with tools such as development assistance to achieve its economic security and to promote the developmental state model abroad. The process of making foreign policy contextualised and reinforced the norms, for both Japan’s domestic and international audiences. Japan today tries to promote science and technology as a main catalyst for creating industries and supporting its domestic, export-oriented economy. This is based on Japan’s own interpretation of its historical path and economic success and is also used to justify its engagement in the Arctic, a region where Japan does not have any sovereign territories. Japan’s Arctic policy is as an extension of its economic diplomacy and an attempt to export the Japanese developmental state model

This study aims to determine the potential of wildlife diversity that can be developed as an ecotourism attraction in the Field Laboratory of Forest Resources Conservation and Ecotourism, Unhas Educational Forest. The data was collected by survey method using the line transect method and concentration point count method. Data were analyzed to determine the ecological indices, ie; Richness Indices, Evenness Indices, and Diversity Indices. The results showed that Field Laboratory of Forest Resources Conservation and Ecotourism, have the wild life of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles and frogs that have the potential to be used in the development of ecotourism. The wildlife to be developed as an ecotourism attraction, are the Sulawesi Black Monkey, Tarsier, Couscous, Sulawesi Civets, Deer and Wild Boar, as well as a variety of birds, reptiles and frogs

The Possibility of Digital Imaging in the Diagnosis of Occlusal Caries

The aim of this study was to assess the possibility of digital image analysis of pit-and-fissure discoloration in order to diagnose caries. Digital images showing pit-and-fissure discoloration in 100 teeth of 19 patients were analyzed to obtain the fractal dimension (FD) and the proportion of the area of pit-and-fissure discoloration to the area of occlusal surface (PA). DIAGNOdent values were measured (DD), and dentists' diagnoses were also obtained. The sensitivity and specificity of FD, PA, DD, and the combination of FD and PA compared to the dentists' diagnoses were calculated. The sensitivities of FD, PA, DD, and the combination of FD and PA were 0.89, 0.47, 0.69, and 0.86, respectively, and the specificities were 0.84, 0.95, 0.91, and 0.86, respectively. Although further research is needed for the practical use, it is possible to use the analysis of digital images of pit-and-fissure molar discoloration as a diagnostic tool

CADLIVE Optimizer: Web-based Parameter Estimation for Dynamic Models

Computer simulation has been an important technique to capture the dynamics of biochemical networks. In most networks, however, few kinetic parameters have been measured in vivo because of experimental complexity. We develop a kinetic parameter estimation system, named the CADLIVE Optimizer, which comprises genetic algorithms-based solvers with a graphical user interface. This optimizer is integrated into the CADLIVE Dynamic Simulator to attain efficient simulation for dynamic models
