Human Trafficking and Sexual Slavery: A Local Epidemic

In examining human trafficking, particularly within the sexual slavery realm, it is clear that there is limited awareness regarding how widespread it truly is. This thesis discusses the prevalence of human trafficking within the United States, with a particular focus on sexual slavery and human trafficking occurring in Sonoma and Marin Counties. The story of a local human trafficking survivor is chronicled throughout the thesis, using her incredibly personal story to connect to the larger narrative of the human trafficking victim. The emphasis on local trafficking is meant to open reader\u27s eyes to the reality that sexual slavery is not solely a third-world problem, but a domestic one as well. This thesis is meant to illuminate the dark world of human trafficking and offer ways that the public can aid in helping victims, as well as various ways to become involved in the fight against sexual slavery within our communities

With different etiologies, certain specific assessments may not have a treatment plan that is studied extensively in evidence-based medical texts. In these uncommon situations, management may not have clear medical guidelines for successful treatment. We present a case of bi-atrial thrombus via PFO with concurrent pulmonary embolism, extensive clot burden history, and the plan to move forward with Angiovac. In patients with this specific history and pathology, modern procedures like Angiovac should be considered and discussed

Renewable Energy in the California Desert: Mechanisms for Evaluating Solar Development on Public Lands

Solar energy development is experiencing significant growth today due to a variety of reasons, including national interest in increasing energy efficiency, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, increasing domestic energy production, and curbing greenhouse gas emissions. This national interest and the availability of high quality solar resources in the California desert have led to proposals for 54 utility-scale solar facilities on public lands. These proposals have forced conservation organizations to consider the tradeoffs between renewable energy generation as a means of combating climate change, and the preservation of the desert’s wildlands and biodiversity. This study analyzes the political, economic, and technological drivers for utility-scale solar development on public lands, as well as the potential impacts to local residents and desert ecology. Comics Telling Refugee Stories

This chapter begins with an indicative survey of comics responding to the current ‘refugee crisis’. The comics in question adopt one of two distinct and established approaches. The first is reportage, usually featuring the author/creator as a central device, while the second re-works and renders testimony in visual form. In their different ways, both contribute to a wider repertoire of positive and sympathetic representations of refugees, offering a counter-point to hostile media and political discourse, often by a focus on the stories of individuals. Mobilizing compassion and moral responses through personal stories of hardship, trauma, tenacity, and survival has long been a tactic of reformist agendas and humanitarian advocacy. By their qualitative difference from dominant forms of factual discourse, comics offer certain advantages. They may also circumvent certain problems associated with photographic representations of suffering. Such comics can nevertheless run the risk of re-producing established victim tropes, and just as with other forms of representation, human-interest angles carry the potential to obscure political dimensions. Representing partition : anxious witnessing and trauma in India and the former Yugoslavia

“Representing Partition,” a comparative study on state division in India and the former Yugoslavia, investigates the way partition literatures, that body of texts covering the violent impact of state-partitioning, register their anxieties in a bid to alter political landscapes. The thesis argues that traumatic affects play a critical role in initiating an antipartitionist consciousness, a vital awareness which is key to the imagining, transformation, and enabling of political communities. My focus on different affects – including anxiety, melancholia, and nostalgia – and their ability to fuel forms of communal solidarity extends current work by postcolonial scholars. “Representing Partition” breaks with the theoretical focus on the nation-state by exploring how partition functions materially as well as symbolically in the generation of new political identities, at the levels of the individual, the regional, the diasporic, and in the creation of new institutions. In representing partition’s traumas, writers seek to perturb and provoke their audience, with a view to reshaping the subjectivities of the reading classes. In four chapters, I examine the way literary narratives insistently return to partition as a site of multiple traumas and suggest new modes of commemoration, that are linked to political praxis. In naming partition’s heterogeneous traumatic effects, such discourses present an alternative to the ethno-national rhetoric of independence proclaimed by the post-partitioned state and gesture towards the formation of future communities. Chapter One analyses the important role of cosmopolitanism and affect in galvanising a form of commemorative ethics that responds to communal, class, and caste violence in novels by diasporic Indian writer Amitav Ghosh. Chapter Two examines the genre of the Indian partition anthology as a vehicle for articulating and, ultimately, institutionalising various collective traumas engendered by partition. Chapter Three concerns questions of recovery, retribution, and restitution as it investigates the break-up of Yugoslavia and its repercussions on self-avowed and traumatised Yugoslavs in the novels of Dubravka Ugresic. Chapter Four looks at testimonies to the 1992-1995 Bosnian war in the comic books of Joe Sacco. This monograph contains the results of a study carried out by the Yakutsk Research Center for Complex Medical Problems, “Evaluating the health of the indigenous minorities of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) and optimizing medical assistance using innovative technologies and telemedicine in indigenous settlements.” The child population was studied in 19 indigenous minority settlements, and the adult population was studied in 12 settlements

Their optimization according to the heat and resource characteristics has been made, the heat-physical mechanism and causes of the catastrophic failure of the electroconducting thin layer of the heater have been revealed; the recommendations on the designing and production process have been developed. The basic results were used at creation of the plants for wood drying (c.
