The article discusses the function of the oldest conventual seal of the Cistercian abbey in Krzeszów. Based on the fullest possible source material, the circumstances around the introduction of the seal into the abbey are presented. The significance of the image on the seal and the most probable source of inspiration for the creation of this image are examined. The role of the seal of the Krzeszów convent in the documents issued in the abbey is also discussed, along with the chronology of the seal’s use

W ostatnich latach badania sfragistyczne w Polsce wykazują znaczącą dynamikę. Systematycznym opracowaniom podlegają pieczęcie kościelne (przede wszystkim biskupie, kapitulne i klasztorne), królewskie oraz miejskie. Znacząco mniej pojawia się publikacji dotyczących pieczęci rycerskich lub szlacheckich. Zauważalny jest też rozwój nurtu edycji źródeł sfragistycznych, dalekiego od wyczerpania, również w stosunku do pieczęci średniowiecznych1. The article presents an analysis of the iconography of two convent seals of Lubiąż made in the first half of the fourteenth century and the sources of inspiration for the seal images. Then, it indicates the probable reasons for the exchange of the seal matrices between 1341 and 1343. Medieval convent seals of the Cistercian monastery at Lubiąż – Chronology, iconography, and the authorship of the seal matrices

In the first half of the fourteenth century, in the Cistercian monastery at Lubiąż, there was an exchange of seals after a short time. The first seal is attested in use in 1341, and the next one already in 1343. In both cases, the image on the seal was modelled on, in my opinion, the miniatures from a gradual produced at the local scriptorium in the first half of the fourteenth century. The first seal of the convent depicts a representation of the enthroned Madonna, popular at that time. On the other seal, the monks from Lubiąż put a representation of the Mater Misericordiae. I think that the replacement of the seal was a result of the monastery’s decision to use the best possible image (the representation of monks headed by the abbot in connection with the figure of Mary) that would contribute to the construction of their identity and – in a broader sense – the Cistercian identity, one of the chief pillars of which was the Marian cult. Attractive in terms of meaning, the Mater Misericordiae type was just gaining a position on various media in Europe, including the Cistercian seals. This testifies to a well-thought-out decision of the Lubiąż monks and the creation of their desired image through seals. It is also possible to put forward a thesis that, as a repeatable medium, the Lubiąż seal was one of the primary sources of propagating the Mater Misericordiae type of representation in the Polish lands. Based on iconography and formal and stylistic features of the seals of the Lubiąż monastery, it has also been established that they were made in Lower Silesia. The scarcity of sources does not make it possible to indicate a particular goldsmith’s workshop or author. Still, the probable place seems to be the monastery or towns with which the Lubiąż monks were associated, like Wrocław or Legnica

W niniejszym tekście przedstawiono analizę pieczęci opatów lubiąskich od schyłku średniowiecza do 1810 r. Zwrócono uwagę na stronę wizualną poszczególnych pieczęci opackich oraz funkcje, jakie pełniły one w działalności opatów w lokalnych wspólnotach oraz na zewnątrz. Artykuł został podzielony na część analityczną oraz inwentarz pieczęci opatów, w którym zestawiono wszystkie znane typariusze i odciski pieczętne z badanego okresu.The article presents an analysis of the seals of the Lubiąż (Leubus) abbots from the period between the end of the Middle Ages to 1810. W prezentowanym artykule przedstawiono rozwój badań dotyczących pieczęci stosowanych przez cystersów na ziemiach polskich. Wydzielono trzy okresy, z których dwa pierwsze trwały od XIX wieku do lat 80. XX wieku. W tym czasie pieczęci cysterskie stanowiły najpierw przede wszystkim przedmiot edycji, a następnie pojawiły się pierwsze interpretacje dotyczące najczęściej pieczęci opatów. Były one jednak prowadzone w ramach większych prac. Właściwy rozwój badań nad pieczęciami cysterskimi rozpoczął się u schyłku lat 90. XX wieku i trwa do dziś. Obecnie podejmuje się nie tylko analizy dotyczące ikonografii oraz rzadziej funkcji prawnych pieczęci, ale również transferu wyobrażeń napieczętnych oraz autorstwa typariuszy.In his article, Tomasz Kałuski presents the development of research on seals used by Cistercians in Poland. He has identified three periods, the first two of which lasted from the nineteenth century to the 1980s. At that time, Cistercian seals were first of all subjected to editing, and then the first interpretations appeared, most often concerning the seals of abbots. However, they were carried out as part of larger projects. The proper development of research on Cistercian seals began in the late 1990s and continues to this day. Currently, scholars study not only the iconography or, less frequently, the legal functions of seals, but also the transfer of seal images and the authorship of seal matrices (Pl. typariusz).Im Artikel wird ein Überblick über die Entwicklung der Forschung zu den in Polen von Zisterziensern verwendeten Siegeln dargestellt. Dabei werden drei Perioden unterschieden, von denen die ersten beiden vom 19. Jahrhundert bis in die 1980er Jahre dauerten. In dieser Zeit waren die Siegel der Zisterzienser zunächst Gegenstand der Edition und später erschienen auch die ersten Interpretationen, vor allem zu den Siegeln der Äbte. Diese wurden jedoch im Rahmen größerer Arbeiten vorgenommen. Die eigentliche Entwicklung der Forschung begann Ende der 1990er Jahre und dauert bis heute an. Dendrolimus sibiricus poses a potentially very high threat to Poland's forest stands. The high proportion of conifers (almost 70%) and climatic conditions make it likely that the species will have favorable conditions for development in our country. If the natural resistance of the environment does not work, gradation appearances and destruction of large forest areas are possible. This could entail catastrophic consequences and lead to the death of trees in most of the PRA area. In the event that the pest is found to be infesting, all possible measures should be taken to prevent its establishment.
