Resisting or Reinstating Cultural Hegemony from Europe? A Critical Reading of Cultural Diversity in French and German Cinema in the Early 21st Century
Resisting or Reinstating Cultural Hegemony from Europe? A Critical Reading of Cultural Diversity in French and German Cinema in the Early 21st Century
Between Worlds : a Socio-Historical Comparative of Directors of Foreign Originâs Modes of Participation in the Cinematographic Space (France and Germany, 1980-2020)
By examining directors of foreign originâs modes of participation in the French and German cinematographic spheres from the 1980s to the 2020s, this thesis engages in a reflection on âthe inscription of a freedom of its own, within series of determinations which simultaneously enable and limit itâ (Chartier, Noiriel, 1994).The first part of the thesis examines the way in which the cinema of directors of foreign background is categorised, and the way in which these categories are transformed in order to reveal the spaces of possibilities and constraints that presented themselves to my respondents. To this end, I analyse, on the one hand, the French and German support for the production of a âworld cinemaâ within the framework of mechanisms for the promotion of cultural diversity, which in turn allow foreign directors to make authorâs films that are valued within the artistic pole of the international film space (Chapter 1). Secondly, I examine the ethnic labels used in the French and German film spheres and the different developments of these categories of âimmigrant cinemaâ in both countries (Chapter 2). Although deployed at distinct levels of the cinematic hierarchy, these categories and institutional mechanisms, through which filmmakers are considered in terms of their national or migratory origins, place them âbetween worldsâ, i. e. at the border of socio-political and cultural spaces. In the second part, I analyse the stages in the social and professional trajectories of the filmmakers, in order to understand the plurality of the cultural and social worlds they have experienced. The study of early socialisation allows to distinguish two profiles of filmmakers with differing cultural resources during childhood, who did not face the same boundaries during their cinematic âconversionâ (Chapter 3). The filmmakersâ different profiles invest the cinematic space in distinct places in which they forge their models and counter-models and the meanings they endow their practice (Chapter 4). In the context of cultural differencesâ reversible valorisation and the economic fieldâs growing influence on cinema, professional âsurvivalâ is conditioned by the ability to adjust to career opportunities determined both by the filmmakersâ social properties, and by the successive frameworks in which their paths unfold. The long-term analysis of several filmmakers of foreign originsâ trajectories makes it possible to bring to light the dynamics of their professional paths, the differentiation of their modes of consecration, and of the forms of symbolic struggle that they engage in (Chapter 5). The categories of âworld cinemaâ and those referring to a âcinema of immigrationâ correspond perhaps less to filmmakersâ profiles, as to stages of professional trajectories, to the acquisition of dispositions and the accumulation of economic and symbolic capital, which facilitate mobility âbetween worldsâ, that is to say, displacement in social and cinematographic spaces. This socio-historical and comparative investigation is mainly based on prosopographical work carried out through semi-structured interviews, documentary sources and the collection of biographical data, on the study of institutional mechanisms as well as on film criticism.
Between Life and Legend. (Re)thinking Power Relations with Raoul Peck and James Baldwin
International audienceThis article sets out to explore the multiple âsensesâ in Raoul Peckâs 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro from several perspectives. First, it focuses on Peckâs cinematographic ambitions with reference to his social experience of geographic mobility and to his current position in the transnational field of cinema. The making of I Am Not Your Negro, ultimately led the Haitian-born director, with a commitment to producing a critical âauteur cinemaâ to create a cinematic testament to the opus of James Baldwin, an author in whom he discovered a language for thinking and for deconstructing racialization. This multi-facetted analysis of Peckâs documentary film and its making will enable us to shed light on the form and meaning of the intellectual quest Peck undertakes in his dialogue with Baldwin
