US energy policies and their effects on solar energy companies
This thesis aims to analyze how the different US energy policies and other events affected the investor’s decisions and, consequently, the share prices of the various solar companies on the days where the news became publicly available. With the conclusions drawn from the previous analysis, this study tries to understand if the investors were aware of the implications of the studied policies in the future of the solar industry and the environment
The juvenile and adult stages in cork oak are distinct because of the periodic debarking of the stem and branches that characterizes the adult stage. This fact implies the use of diameter under bark for the adult stage while diameter over bark is the natural variable for juvenile stands in growth and yield studies. Tree growth in the adult stage may also be affected by the periodic debarking. The differences between the two stages justify the development of different models for each of them. The objective of this paper is to develop an individual tree growth and yield model for juvenile cork oak stands for general application on the cork oak distribution area in Southern Portugal. The most important modules of this growth model were developed using data collected from a large number of trees in the juvenile stage, from several plots distributed around the South of Portugal. These modules were: an individual tree diameter growth model, a height-diameter model and a model for crown diameter prediction
A deep analysis into flight delays´ problematic: tendancys, root causes and ultimate implications
A Deep Analysis into Flight Delays’ Problematic: Tendencies, Root Causes and Ultimate Implications Airline industry has been experiencing a considerable increase in demand over the years. However, one of the biggest challenges currently faced by airlines is the industry’s inability to adjust the supply to demand’s growth, as increase in airports’ capacity is limited. Such result in a higher capacity utilization and, consequently in an increased disruption in processes, being flight delays the main problematic arising from that. Considering this, this study will statistically analyse multiple factors, reaching conclusions on flight delays’ tendencies, root causes and implications ,in order to ultimately provide recommendations to minimize such problematic by turning processes more efficient
Carbon sequestration of modern Quercus suber L. silvoarable agroforestry systems in Portugal: a YeldSAFE-based estimation
Modern alley cropping designs, with trees
aligned in rows and adapted to operating farming
machinery, have been suggested for Europe. This paper
explores the potential for adoption of cork oak (Quercus
suber L.) agroforestry in Portugal and estimates the
potential carbon sequestration. Spatial modeling and
Portuguese datasets were used to estimate target areas
where cork oak could grow on farmland. Different
implementation scenarios were then modeled for this
area assuming a modern silvoarable agroforestry system
(113 trees ha-1 thinned at year 20 for establishing
50 trees ha-1). The YieldSAFE process-based model
was used to predict the biomass and carbon yield of cork
oak under low and high soil water holding capacity
levels. Approximately 353,000 ha are available in Portugal
for new cork oak alley cropping. Assuming
implementation rates between 10 % of the area with
low soil water capacity (60 mm: 15 cm depth, coarse
texture) and 70 %of the areawith high soilwater holding
capacity (1,228 mm: 200 cm depth, very fine texture),
then carbon sequestration could be 5 9 106 and
123 9 106 Mg CO2 respectively. Due to higher yields
on more productive land, scenarios of limited implementation in high productivity locations can
sequester similar amounts of carbon as wide implementation
on low productivity land, suggesting that a priori
land classification assessments can improve the targeting
of land and financial incentives for carbon sequestratio
e não por episódio.ABSTRACT - Introduction: HF is the leading cause of hospitalization in Europe and the USA in older
people (65 years or more) and HF readmissions accounts for 1 to 2% of total health
costs. HF telemonitoring is one of the ways to provide care with the greatest impact on
Telehealth, by monitoring the patient remotely, and reducing hospitalizations as well as
the costs of the health system.
Aim: To identify the potential cost savings in HF patients in telemonitoring programs in
Portugal during 2014.
Methodology: The episodes with HF readmission were identified through the Hospital
Morbidity Base from January to November 2014. From these episodes were selected
those that could correspond to potential candidates for HF telemonitoring programs,
according to ACSS criteria. The costs of these episodes were calculated according to
“Portaria nº 20/2014” and compared with the costs presented for the services provided
under “Acordo Quadro de Telemedicina de 2016”.
Results: From January to November 2014 there were 13939 hospitalizations whose main
diagnosis was HF. From 1861 episodes related to hospital readmission, 791 of these
(42.5%) met the criteria for patient selection in ACSS telemonitoring programs. The
average cost of these episodes was 2436,3€, while the cost presented by the
telemonitoring service provider (MEO/PT ACS consortium) was 2040€ per patient.
Conclusion: There is a difference of about 396€ when comparing the cost of providing a
HF telemonitoring program with the average cost of a hospital readmission episode of
potential HF telemonitoring candidates, the first having a lower cost.. However, it should
be analysed carefully, because the cost of the MEO/PT ACS consortium is per patient
and per year and not per episode
