Survey and Assessment of Laws on the Informal Sector

    Get PDF
This study classifies the laws affecting the informal sector and assesses the extent of the empowerment of the sector based on the provisions in the laws that allow for organization, decision making mechanisms and transfer of power from the traditional center to another. Results indicate that, to some extent, four groups within the sector are accorded empowerment through Philippine laws: the agricultural sector, small and medium enterprises, industrial home workers and cooperatives. These groups are allowed to form organizations and to participate in decision making bodies. Decision making is accorded to certain groups among informal sector, which, in some cases, comprise the majority members in decision making bodies. Nowhere among the laws is a shift of power provided from the traditional or government decision makers to the informal sector. However, certain groups within the IS have participated in the institution of some policies and the realization of programs for their own advantage.informal financial sectors, small and medium enterprises

    Get PDF
This paper identifies the factors such as demographic, economic, and sociological factors that influence the children’s school participation in elementary level. Highlight of this study is explaining the context of mother’s absence in a household as it influences the children’s school participation. This paper utilized both quantitative and qualitative techniques in the data collection and analysis. The data set from Annual Poverty Indicators Survey 2011 was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis. Selected families with 6-11 years old children whose mothers are working abroad were also interviewed to provide an understanding of the relevance of social resource within families in the children’s school participation

Gap between curricular practice and the idealism in the goals of education exists. This study evaluated the status of the curricular practices of selected tertiaryprivate-sectarian institutions using the Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP)evaluation model and answered the following research questions: (1) What is thestatus of the curricular practices of the selected tertiary private-sectarian institutionsas evaluated by the school administrators, faculty, staff, and students in terms of thefollowing: (a) goals and objectives; (b)faculty qualifications and performance; (c)on program of studies and curriculum; (d)teaching methodologies, techniques andassessments (f) values practice and integration(g) library services; (h) communityservices and social awareness; (f) research. (2) Is there a significant difference onthe assessments of the three groups of respondents as to the above-mentionedvariables? (3) What factors hinder and facilitate the implementation of thecurricular practices in the selected tertiary private-sectarian institutions? Usingdescriptive method, data were gathered from 207 respondents from three tertiaryAdventist schools in the Philippines, namely the Northern Luzon Adventist College(NLAC), the Northeast Luzon Adventist College (NELAC), and the North VisayanAdventist College. The findings reveal that the curricular practices for all threegroups, namely the administrators, the faculty, and the students were generally ratedas implemented. There is significant difference on the evaluation of the threegroups of respondents on goals and objectives; on teaching methodologies, techniques, and assessments; on values practice and integration; on library services;on community extension services and social awareness. There is no significantdifference though on faculty qualifications and performance; on program of studiesand curriculum; and the dissemination and relevance of research. The factors that hinder the implementation of the curricular practices include among others: a) weakresearch; b) need for the tertiary private-sectarian institutions to hire and train young faculty members

O modelo conceitual FRBR: análise bibliométrica no SNBU (2006-2012).

    Get PDF

Long-distance rail in Europe: Comparing the forms of head-on competition across Europe

    Get PDF
Europe is finally entering a season of liberalisation in the long-distance rail passenger market, which takes the form of on-track competition among public and private operators. The paper provides a broad-scope comparison of relevant European markets, belonging to liberalised and non-liberalised countries, aiming to point out the patterns in terms of supply, competition model and prices. The paper is based on a sample of heterogeneous 69 city-pairs, analysed in two fourteen days periods in 2019 (May/June and November). All available modes are observed, collecting info on companies, frequency of services, and cheapest price. The analysis starts from a schematisation of different business models, based on literature. Then, using the database, we study the country's supply structure, size, and level of intermodal and intra-modal competition through HHIs. Prices are analysed in two steps: the average prices and the price dispersion, searching for their main determinants, including but not limited to competition. Results show that a higher competition level is not always corresponding to low prices, which are instead determined by many other factors such as size of market, demand, socio-economic characteristics, subsidies, production costs, speed advantage, strength of the incumbent, etc. The competition level, instead, directly influences the quality, the supplied capacity, and the price dispersion

HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer: a review on burden of the disease and opportunities for prevention and early detection

    Get PDF
The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) related to infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is rising, making it now the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States. These tumors present differently than traditional mucosal head and neck cancers, and those affected often lack classic risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use. Currently, there are no approved approaches for prevention and early detection of disease, thus leading many patients to present with advanced cancers requiring intense surgical or nonsurgical therapies resulting in significant side effects and cost to the health-care system. In this review, we outline the evolving epidemiology of HPV-related OPC. We also summarize the available evidence corresponding to HPV-related OPC prevention, including efficacy and safety of the HPV vaccine in preventing oral HPV infections. Finally, we describe emerging techniques for identifying and screening those who may be at high risk for developing these tumors
