Why does inflation look single field to us?

Most high-energy constructions that realise a phase of cosmic inflation contain many degrees of freedom. Yet, cosmological observations are all consistent with single-field embeddings. We show how volume selection effects explain this apparent paradox. Due to quantum diffusion, different regions of space inflate by different amounts. In regions that inflate most, and eventually dominate the volume of the universe, a generic mechanism is unveiled that diverts the inflationary dynamics towards single-field attractors. The formalism of constrained stochastic inflation is developed to this end.Comment: 5 pages and 2 figures without appendices (total 17 pages, 6 figures

Liposome immunoassay based on bio luminescent detection and its application to on-chip analysis

Luc-encapsulated liposomes were employed to develop on-chip immunoassays. Straight-channel chips were better than microbead for V-cup chips to immobilize several antibodies. Straight-channel chip that has PDMS flat substrate and wider channel (1000 μm) was optimum for this assay. To detect high BL intensity, fast flow rate (300 μl/min) was better than slower flow rate because channel was filled up with substrate quickly. However, substrate volume and lysis buffer didn't affect the detecttion high BL intensity. This implies that a sufficient amount of substrate was delivered to Luc in the liposomes. The LOD of CRP in this assay was 10 ng/mL

Estimation of Vs profile using its natural frequency and Rayleigh-wave dispersion characteristics

    No full text
International audienceThe evaluation of the natural frequency of random Vs profiles before analyzing the fundamental Rayleigh-wave dispersion characteristics is proposed in this paper. The inclusion of this parameter optimizes the effectiveness of random inverse searching to estimate Vs profiles. To demonstrate this method, a numerical test was performed using the "experimental" Rayleigh-wave dispersion curve obtained for a fictitious TEST site

Laugh syncope as a rare sub-type of the situational syncopes: a case report

Abstract

Introduction

Laughter is a good medicine; it enhances cardiovascular health and the immune system. What happens, however, if a person laughs too much or the laughter becomes out of control? Laughter-induced syncope is rare and likely goes unrecognized by many health care providers. It is thought to be another form of Valsalva-induced syncope.

Case presentation

We report the case of a 56-year-old, moderately obese (body mass index of 35) man with a past medical history of sleep apnea, hypertension and hyperlipidemia who suffered from syncope secondary to intense laughter. The patient also had a history of syncope in the distant past when he collapsed on the floor for several seconds. Treadmill stress testing after the incident revealed no arrhythmia or ischemic disease, although he complained of dizziness after the test and a sudden drop in blood pressure was noted.

Conclusion

Laughter-induced or gelastic syncope is extremely rare. It is thought to be a sub-type of the situational syncopes.</p

New technique for dynamic closure of the abdominal wall

Advances in care of trauma patients and severe abdominal infections are responsible for an increasing number of laparostomies. The management of this entity is complex and several techniques have been described for its treatment. Recently the concept of dynamic closure of the abdominal wall was introduced in the literature with high success rates. The objective of this report is to serve as a foreword for a new approach for the treatment of laparostomy developed at the University Hospital of the University of São Paulo. This is a simple and low cost method, easily performed by a general surgeon. The procedure was also used prophylactically as reinforcement in tight abdominal closures. It is described in detail as well as the results in the first patients. Although promising, refinements and further studies are needed to validate the technique

Borel resummation of secular divergences in stochastic inflation

We make use of Borel resummation to extract the exact time dependence from the divergent series found in the context of stochastic inflation. Correlation functions of self-interacting scalar fields in de Sitter spacetime are known to develop secular IR divergences via loops, and the first terms of the divergent series have been consistently computed both with standard techniques for curved spacetime quantum field theory and within the framework of stochastic inflation. We show that Borel resummation can be used to interpret the divergent series and to correctly infer the time evolution of the correlation functions. In practice, we adopt a method called Borel--Pad\'{e} resummation where we approximate the Borel transformation by a Pad\'{e} approximant. We also discuss the singularity structures of Borel transformations and mention possible applications to cosmology.Comment: 40 pages, 12 figure
