An Evaluation of Herbicides for Broadleaf-Weed Control in Rapeseed: Efficacy, Phytotoxicity, and Soil Persistence Studies

At the recommended rates (1.0 lb/A for trifluralin, ethalfluralin, EL5261; 0.75 lb/A for dinitramine; 1.2 lb/A for nitrofen), none of the herbicides we evaluated in these studies reduced rapeseed stands, yields, or test weights. However, at higher rates (1. 5, 3.0 lb A), dinitramine reduced rapeseed stands, but this did not result in decreased yields. None of the other herbicides reduced rapeseed stand, yield, or test weights when applied at up to four times the recommended rate. No trifluralin residues were detected in rapeseed whole-plant or seed samples. All of the herbicides provided adequate control of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.). Corn spurry (Spergula arvensis L.) was controlled by trifluralin. ethalfluralin. EL-5261, and nitrofen. All of the herbicides except nitrofen controlled chickweed [Stellaria media (L.) Cyrillo]. In 1979, 51 per cent of the trifluralin applied remained at the end of the growing season in one study while 26 per cent remained in another study. The rate of degradation at three sites in 1979 were as follows (greatest to least); Delta Junction, Matanuska Valley, Fairbanks. Degradation rates of trifluralin were not significantly different in three soil types or at two different application rates. Trifluralin showed no signs of leaching through the soil profile. In 1981, 25 per cent of the trifluralin, 8 per cent of the ethalfluralin, and 24 per cent of the EL-5261 applied remained at the end of the growing season. Despite the relatively long persistence of these preplant, incorporated herbicides, yields and test weights of barley planted in succeeding years were not reduced. A benefit of these persistent residues was control of broadleaf weeds in the succeeding barley crop

Solution of space orientation distribution of fiber particles by means of Fokker-Planck equation for laminar flow

This bachelor thesis presents mathematical model of spatial orientation distribution for fiber particles in aerosol suspension. The influence of laminar flow and Brownian motion is considered. This corresponds with the advection-diffusion model known as Fokker-Planck equation. Perturbation series is used to determine the solution of this partial differential equation. The approximate solution is obtained as a finite series of spherical harmonics.

Covetousness in Book 5 of Confessio Amantis: A Medieval Precursor to Neoliberalism

In Book 5 of John Gower’s Confessio Amantis, Genius’s extended discussion of Covetousness demonstrates how this subtype of Avarice leads to the ruin of the networks of collectives that make up society. Interestingly, the process by which Covetousness damages the collectives that make up these networks looks a lot like the neoliberalism that has come to dominate a number of governments in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Gower’s tales trace the spread of this sin from the top of society to the bottom; from the highly public to the intimately personal. In all scenarios, Covetousness is a force of destruction rather than one of good, altering and, in the end, ultimately destroying the social bonds that once existed between the actors involved. Using Actor-Network Theory, I argue that Gower presents his readers with the dire consequences of misunderstanding the structure of and collectives in society when Covetousness governs one’s actions - when the market overtakes the moral. The negative effects of Covetousness in the tales within this section of Book 5 reveal the dependence of each perpetrator of Covetousness on a collective of actors that includes material objects rather than monolithic social structures. Furthermore, Gower’s critique of Covetousness in showing us its dissolution of the bonds and relationships that make up society both foreshadows the rise and lasting negative impact of neoliberalism

Completing College in a Covid Moment -- Expectation vs. Reality for the Class of 2021’s College Experience

Using the overarching theoretical frameworks of emerging adulthood and ritual behavior, this qualitative study explores how students in Butler University\u27s Class of 2021 perceive their original college experience expectations vs. their current Covid moment reality and what supplemental behaviors these seniors are using to create a meaningful college experience despite the perceived disconnects

Knowing What Has Been Done: The Technology of Ritual ‘Objects’ among the Abelam (East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea)

The analysis of religion has often placed an emphasis on beliefs and ideologies, prioritizing these elements over those of the material world. Through the ethnographic analysis of a variety of contemporary religious practices, Making Spirits questions the presumed separation of spirit and matter, and sheds light on the dynamics between spiritual and material domains. By examining the cultural contexts in which material culture is central to the creation and experience of religion and belief, this volume analyses the different ways in which the concepts of the material and spiritual worlds intersect, interact and inform each other in the reproduction of religious rites. Using examples such as spirit mediums, fetishes and ritual objects across a variety of cultures such as Latin America, Japan and Central Africa, Nico Tassi and Diana Espirito Santo offer insights that challenge accepted categories in the study of religion, making this book important for scholars of comparative religion, anthropology and sociology

Media sexualization and its impact on college aged women

    Get PDF
Social and traditional media are often studied in relation to women’s perceptions of sex. However, they are often studied separately instead of together, missing the overall connection of media on attitudes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between media consumption, specifically social media and television, and college-aged women\u27s levels of internalized sexualization. The findings of this study found a significant positive correlation between time spent consuming romanced-based reality television and romantic comedies and higher levels of internalized sexualization in college-aged women. This study also found there to be a significant positive correlation between college women’s usage of Instagram and their levels of internalized sexualization. These findings suggest that there is a significant relationship between time spent on Instagram, consumption of romance-based reality television and romantic comedies, and higher levels of internalized sexualization

Taim Bilong Misis Bilong Armi : Memories of Wives of Australian Servicemen in Papua New Guinea, 1951-1975

Isolation, separation, loneliness and disruption-such can be the lot of an army officer's wife. Couple these problems with pervasive heat and occasional tropical illnesses, inadequate housing, a different culture, communication difficulties, and frequent long absences from their husbands, and even their children-and this was the life many Australian army wives faced when accompanying their husbands on postings to the Pacific Islands Regiment in Papua New Guinea in the decades prior to independence in 1975. Taim Bilong Misis Bilong Armi is an anthology of their stories-heartwarming stories, sad stories, funny stories, totally engaging stories. There are stories of weddings, births, fun times, moments of fear or awkwardness, and experiences of working in an unfamiliar environment. The predominantly young army communities supported each other through the hard times, and partied together in the good times
