The Replication Argument for Incompatibilism
In this paper, I articulate an argument for incompatibilism about moral responsibility and determinism. My argument comes in the form of an extended story, modeled loosely on Peter van Inwagenâs ârollback argumentâ scenario. I thus call it âthe replication argument.â As I aim to bring out, though the argument is inspired by so-called âmanipulationâ and âoriginal designâ arguments, the argument is not a version of either such argumentâand plausibly has advantages over both. The result, I believe, is a more convincing incompatibilist argument than those we have considered previously
Preparation of urban land use inventories by machine processing of ERTS MSS data
Spectral classes of urban phenomena identified from Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) multispectral scanner data in Milwaukee included suburban inner city, industry, grassy (open area), road, wooded suburb, water cloud, and shadow. The Milwaukee spectral class statistics were used to classify the Chicago area, within the same ERTS frame, and similar results were achieved. In another ERTS frame, Marion County (Indianapolis) data were classified into similar classes. The Marion County ERTS study was supported by a land use classification of an area near downtown Indianapolis that utilized 12-band MSS data collected by aircraft from 3000 feet. The results of the ERTS analyses suggest that satellite data will be a useful tool for the urban planner for monitoring urban land use
Simple threshold rules solve explore/exploit tradeâoffs in a resource accumulation search task
How, and how well, do people switch between exploration and exploitation to search for and accumulate resources? We study the decision processes underlying such exploration/exploitation tradeâoffs using a novel card selection task that captures the common situation of searching among multiple resources (e.g., jobs) that can be exploited without depleting. With experience, participants learn to switch appropriately between exploration and exploitation and approach optimal performance. We model participants' behavior on this task with random, threshold, and sampling strategies, and find that a linear decreasing threshold rule best fits participants' results. Further evidence that participants use decreasing thresholdâbased strategies comes from reaction time differences between exploration and exploitation; however, participants themselves report nonâdecreasing thresholds. Decreasing threshold strategies that âfrontâloadâ exploration and switch quickly to exploitation are particularly effective in resource accumulation tasks, in contrast to optimal stopping problems like the Secretary Problem requiring longer exploration
The Effects of Sex-Sorted Semen on Southern Dairy Farms
This paper examines the impact of sex-sorted semen adoption on dairy farm level economics. Representative dairies are used to simulate the financial impacts of moving to this new technology. Key economic, financial and herd dynamics will be compared among dairies to show how the uses of sex-sorted semen will affect dairy farms. All seven of the representative dairies that were analyzed sold surplus replacement heifers using sex-sorted semen. A rigorous formulation of the cosmological Newtonian limit without averaging
We prove the existence of a large class of one-parameter families of
cosmological solutions to the Einstein-Euler equations that have a Newtonian
limit. This class includes solutions that represent a finite, but otherwise
arbitrary, number of compact fluid bodies. These solutions provide exact
cosmological models that admit Newtonian limits but, are not, either implicitly
or explicitly, averaged
Gaussian approximation and single-spin measurement in OSCAR MRFM with spin noise
A promising technique for measuring single electron spins is magnetic
resonance force microscopy (MRFM), in which a microcantilever with a permanent
magnetic tip is resonantly driven by a single oscillating spin. If the quality
factor of the cantilever is high enough, this signal will be amplified over
time to the point that it can be detected by optical or other techniques. An
important requirement, however, is that this measurement process occur on a
time scale short compared to any noise which disturbs the orientation of the
measured spin. We describe a model of spin noise for the MRFM system, and show
how this noise is transformed to become time-dependent in going to the usual
rotating frame. We simplify the description of the cantilever-spin system by
approximating the cantilever wavefunction as a Gaussian wavepacket, and show
that the resulting approximation closely matches the full quantum behavior. We
then examine the problem of detecting the signal for a cantilever with thermal
noise and spin with spin noise, deriving a condition for this to be a useful

Differential gaze behavior towards sexually preferred and non-preferred human figures
The gaze pattern associated with image exploration is a sensitive index of our attention, motivation and preference. To examine whether an individualâs gaze behavior
can reflect his/her sexual interest, we compared gaze patterns of young heterosexual men and women (M = 19.94 years, SD = 1.05) while viewing photos of plain-clothed male and female figures aged from birth to sixty years old. Our analysis revealed a clear gender difference in viewing sexually preferred figure images. Men displayed a distinctive gaze pattern only when viewing twenty-year-old female images, with more fixations and longer viewing time dedicated to the upper body and waist-hip region. Women also
directed more attention at the upper body on female images in comparison to male images, but this difference was not age-specific. Analysis of local image salience revealed that observersâ eye-scanning strategies could not be accounted for by low-level processes, such as analyzing local image contrast and structure, but were associated with
attractiveness judgments. The results suggest that the difference in cognitive processing of sexually preferred and non-preferred figures can be manifested in gaze patterns
associated with figure viewing. Thus, eye-tracking holds promise as a potential sensitive measure for sexual preference, particularly in men
Integral Constraints On cosmological Perturbations and their Energy
We show the relation between Traschen's integral equations and the energy,
and ``position of the centre of mass'', of the matter perturbations in a
Robertson-Walker spacetime. When the perturbations are ``localised'' we get a
set of integral constraints that includes hers. We illustrate them on a simple

Bit-wise Unequal Error Protection for Variable Length Block Codes with Feedback
The bit-wise unequal error protection problem, for the case when the number
of groups of bits is fixed, is considered for variable length block
codes with feedback. An encoding scheme based on fixed length block codes with
erasures is used to establish inner bounds to the achievable performance for
finite expected decoding time. A new technique for bounding the performance of
variable length block codes is used to establish outer bounds to the
performance for a given expected decoding time. The inner and the outer bounds
match one another asymptotically and characterize the achievable region of
rate-exponent vectors, completely. The single message message-wise unequal
error protection problem for variable length block codes with feedback is also
