Clinical surveillance of thrombotic microangiopathies in Scotland, 2003-2005
The prevalence, incidence and outcomes of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpura (TTP) are not well established in adults or children from prospective studies. We sought to identify both outcomes and current management strategies using prospective, national surveillance of HUS and TTP, from 2003 to 2005 inclusive. We also investigated the links between these disorders and factors implicated in the aetiology of HUS and TTP including infections, chemotherapy, and immunosuppression. Most cases of HUS were caused by verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC), of which serotype O157 predominated, although other serotypes were identified. The list of predisposing factors for TTP was more varied although use of immunosuppressive agents and severe sepsis, were the most frequent precipitants. The study demonstrates that while differentiating between HUS and TTP is sometimes difficult, in most cases the two syndromes have quite different predisposing factors and clinical parameters, enabling clinical and epidemiological profiling for these disorders
Climate Change and Biosphere Response: Unlocking the Collections Vault
Natural history collections (NHCs) are an important source of the long-term data needed to understand how biota respond to ongoing anthropogenic climate change. These include taxon occurrence data for ecological modeling, as well as information that can be used to reconstruct mechanisms through which biota respond to changing climates. The full potential of NHCs for climate change research cannot be fully realized until high-quality data sets are conveniently accessible for research, but this requires that higher priority be placed on digitizing the holdings most useful for climate change research (e.g., whole-biota studies, time series, records of intensively sampled common taxa). Natural history collections must not neglect the proliferation of new information from efforts to understand how present-day ecosystems are responding to environmental change. These new directions require a strategic realignment for many NHC holders to complement their existing focus on taxonomy and systematics. To set these new priorities, we need strong partnerships between NHC holders and global change biologists
The Young and the Dustless: Interpreting Radio Observations of UltraViolet Luminous Galaxies
Ultraviolet Luminous Galaxies (UVLGs) have been identified as intensely
star-forming, nearby galaxies. A subset of these, the supercompact UVLGs, are
believed to be local analogs of high redshift Lyman Break Galaxies. Here we
investigate the radio continuum properties of this important population for the
first time. We have observed 42 supercompact UVLGs with the VLA, all of which
have extensive coverage in the UV/optical by GALEX and SDSS. Our analysis
includes comparison samples of multiwavelength data from the Spitzer First Look
Survey and from the SDSS-Galex matched catalogs. In addition we have Spitzer
MIPS data for 24 of our galaxies and find that they fall on the radio-FIR
correlation of normal star-forming galaxies. We find that our galaxies have
lower radio-to-UV ratios and lower Balmer decrements than other local galaxies
with similar (high) star formation rates. Optical spectra show they have lower
Dn(4000) and HdeltaA indices, higher Hbeta emission-line equivalents widths,
and higher [OIII]5007/Hbeta emission-line ratios than normal star forming
galaxies. Comparing these results to galaxy spectral evolution models we
conclude that supercompact UVLGs are distinguished from normal star forming
galaxies firstly by their high specific star formation rates. Moreover,
compared to other types of galaxies with similar star formation rates, they
have significantly less dust attenuation. In both regards they are similar to
Lyman Break Galaxies. This suggests that the process that causes star formation
in the supercompact UVLGs differs from other local star forming galaxies, but

Restoring the Heart: A Community Vision for the Neighborhood of Aldenville
The goal of the Master of Regional Planning Studio is to develop a student’s techniques for collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing spatial and non-spatial data and then presenting that collective data in a manner (i.e., report, video, presentation, and charettes) that is understandable to academics, professionals, and the public. Planning Studio allows students to integrate knowledge from coursework and research, and apply such knowledge to resolving representative planning problems. At UMASS Amherst, these problems are found in neighborhood, rural, urban, and/or regional settings.
For the Fall 2017 Planning Studio, Chicopee tasked the Masters of Regional Planning Studio to prepare a vision plan that focuses on improving Chicopee’s public engagement and land-use in Aldenville. The vision plan will contain a multi-question survey that will query Chicopee residents on their opinions of Chicopee, overall, and/or the neighborhood of Aldenville. In addition, the vision plan will also include two proposed land-use studies (zoning, land-use, pedestrian access, design, street improvements) for the neighborhood of Aldenville. This project has 6 goals: § Goal 1: Develop an outreach/engagement process that includes community survey materials (in hard-copy and digital formats) for distribution to Aldenville residents and stakeholders. The Planning Studio shall develop these materials understanding the City’s intended re-use of materials in a City-wide comprehensive visioning process. § Goal 2: Experiment with non-traditional modes of community engagement to maximize variety and volume of community response and data collection. § Goal 3: Analyze data collected from the outreach/engagement process to best inform the neighborhood visioning process and final Aldenville Vision Plan. § Goal 4: Develop a comprehensive understanding and graphic representation of major neighborhood destinations within Aldenville from which a more connected neighborhood concept can be developed. § Goal 5: Document, analyze, and discuss neighborhood opportunities and challenges (informed by the Community Outreach/Public Engagement Process) to advance visions for improving connectivity within the neighborhood and broadening the potential for Aldenville to function as a destination for all City residents as well as visitors from outside the City. § Goal 6: Document and prioritize destinations within Aldenville and propose urban design interventions to improve these destinations while using these destinations as anchors in a larger neighborhood network
The GALEX Ultraviolet Atlas of Nearby Galaxies
We present images, integrated photometry, and surface-brightness and color profiles for a total of 1034 nearby galaxies recently observed by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite in its far-ultraviolet (FUV; λ_(eff) = 1516 Å) and near-ultraviolet (NUV; λ_(eff) = 2267 Å) bands. Our catalog of objects is derived primarily from the GALEX Nearby Galaxies Survey (NGS) supplemented by galaxies larger than 1' in diameter serendipitously found in these fields and in other GALEX exposures of similar of greater depth. The sample analyzed here adequately describes the distribution and full range of properties (luminosity, color, star formation rate [SFR]) of galaxies in the local universe. From the surface brightness profiles obtained we have computed asymptotic magnitudes, colors, and luminosities, along with the concentration indices C31 and C42. We have also morphologically classified the UV surface brightness profiles according to their shape. This data set has been complemented with archival optical, near-infrared, and far-infrared fluxes and colors. We find that the integrated (FUV − K) color provides robust discrimination between elliptical and spiral/irregular galaxies and also among spiral galaxies of different subtypes. Elliptical galaxies with brighter K-band luminosities (i.e., more massive) are redder in (NUV − K) color but bluer in (FUV − NUV) (a color sensitive to the presence of a strong UV upturn) than less massive ellipticals. In the case of the spiral/irregular galaxies our analysis shows the presence of a relatively tight correlation between the (FUV − NUV) color (or, equivalently, the slope of the UV spectrum, β) and the total infrared-to-UV ratio. The correlation found between (FUV − NUV) color and K-band luminosity (with lower luminosity objects being bluer than more luminous ones) can be explained as due to an increase in the dust content with galaxy luminosity. The FHI FEL Upgrade Design
Since coming on-line in November 2013, the Fritz-Haber-Institut (FHI) der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG) Free-Electron Laser (FEL) has provided intense, tunable infrared radiation to FHI user groups. It has enabled experiments in diverse fields ranging from bio-molecular spectroscopy to studies of clusters and nanoparticles, nonlinear solid-state spectroscopy, and surface science, resulting in 50 peer-reviewed publications so far. The MPG has now funded a significant upgrade to the original FHI FEL. A second short Rayleigh range undulator FEL beamline is being added that will permit lasing from 160 microns. Additionally, a 500 MHz kicker cavity will permit simultaneous two-color operation of the FEL from both FEL beamlines over an optical range of 5 to 50 microns by deflecting alternate 1 GHz pulses into each of the two undulators. We will describe the upgraded FHI FEL physics and engineering design and present the plans for two-color FEL operations in November 2020
Ongoing Formation of Bulges and Black Holes in the Local Universe: New Insights from GALEX
We analyze a volume-limited sample of massive bulge-dominated galaxies with
data from both the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer
(GALEX) satellite. The galaxies have central velocity dispersions greater than
100 km/s and stellar surface mass densities that lie above the value where
galaxies transition from actively star forming to passive systems. The sample
is limited to redshifts 0.03<z<0.07. At these distances, the SDSS spectra
sample the light from the bulge-dominated central regions of the galaxies. The
GALEX NUV data provide high sensitivity to low rates of global star formation
in these systems. Our sample of bulge-dominated galaxies exhibits a much larger
dispersion in NUV-r colour than in optical g-r colour. Nearly all of the
galaxies with bluer NUV-r colours are AGN. Both GALEX images and SDSS colour
profiles demonstrate that the excess UV light is associated with an extended
disk. We find that galaxies with red outer regions almost never have a young
bulge or a strong AGN. Galaxies with blue outer regions have bulges and black
holes that span a wide range in age and accretion rate. Galaxies with young
bulges and strongly accreting black holes almost always have blue outer disks.
Our suggested scenario is one in which the source of gas that builds the bulge
and black hole is a low mass reservoir of cold gas in the disk.The presence of
this gas is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for bulge and black hole
growth. Some mechanism must transport this gas inwards in a time variable way.
As the gas in the disk is converted into stars, the galaxies will turn red, but
