Achieving high performance outcomes through trust in virtual teams
Developing trust among team members is critical for achieving high performance outcomes. Recently, global business operations necessitated working in a team environment with colleagues outside traditional organizational boundaries, across distances, and across time zones. In this article, we discuss how human resource practices can support organizational initiatives when business operations mandate increased virtual teamwork. We examine the role of HR in enhancing relationship building and the development of trust among workers who may rarely, if ever, meet face-toface. Using research from teamwork, social exchange theory, and knowledge sharing, we discuss how four areas of human resources management—recruitment, training, performance appraisal, and compensation/reward— might combine with technology to facilitate the development of trust among virtual team members
A bodner-partom visco-plastic dynamic sphere benchmark problem
Developing benchmark analytic solutions for problems in solid and fluid mechanics is very important for the purpose of testing and verifying computational physics codes. Our primary objective in this research is to obtain a benchmark analytic solution to the equation of motion in radially symmetric spherical coordinates. An analytic solution for the dynamic response of a sphere composed of an isotropic visco-plastic material and subjected to spherically symmetric boundary conditions is developed and implemented. The radial displacement u is computed by solving the equation of motion, a linear second-order hyperbolic PDE. The plastic strains εp and εp are computed by solving two non-linear first-order ODEs in time. We obtain a solution for u in terms of the plastic strain components and boundary conditions in the form of an infinite series. Computationally, at each time step, we set up an iteration scheme to solve the PDE-ODE system. The linear momentum equation is solved using the plastic strains from the previous iteration, then the plastic strain equations are solved numerically using the new displacement. Trigonometric Functions through Right Triangle Similarities
This article presents an introduction to the trigonometric functions tangent, cosecant, secant,
and cotangent. Students understand these functions as quotients of the sine and cosine functions only.
However, applying right triangle geometry to a triangle constructed within the unit circle develops the
remaining trigonometric functions as ratios of side lengths, fostering stronger student understanding
Electronic Books: An Overview of the First Two Generations.
The electronic text reading device, or e-book, is an idea that has reached the implementation stage. Technology has only recently made possible the production of a device to challenge the printed book’s dominance as the media for information transmission. These microprocessor-based devices are attempts to exceed the limitations of printed texts while retaining their strengths. Two generations of these devices, and the companies that created them, have reached the marketplace.
This thesis provides a short history of electronic text readers and gives an overview of the first and second generations. The issues that will affect the adoption of the e-book as the dominant media for the transmission of texts are discussed. The primary objections to the e-book’s replacement of the book are durability, ease of use and clarity. With these concerns addressed by improvement of the underlying technology, the e-book will replace the majority of the printed books in the marketplace

Technology use in healthcare is an integral part of diagnosis and treatment. The use of technology in medical devices and sensors is growing. These devices include implantable medical devices, and consumer health and fitness tracking devices and applications. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is the most commonly used communication method in medical devices and sensors. Security and privacy are important, especially in healthcare technologies that can impact morbidity. There is an increasing need to evaluate the security and privacy of healthcare technology, especially with devices and sensors that use Bluetooth Low Energy due to the increasing prevalence and use of medical devices and sensors. Therefore, more robust security analysis is needed to evaluate security and privacy aspects of medical devices and sensors that use Bluetooth Low Energy

Adjusting for bias introduced by instrumental variable estimation in the Cox Proportional Hazards Model
Instrumental variable (IV) methods are widely used for estimating average
treatment effects in the presence of unmeasured confounders. However, the
capability of existing IV procedures, and most notably the two-stage residual
inclusion (2SRI) procedure recommended for use in nonlinear contexts, to
account for unmeasured confounders in the Cox proportional hazard model is
unclear. We show that instrumenting an endogenous treatment induces an
unmeasured covariate, referred to as an individual frailty in survival analysis
parlance, which if not accounted for leads to bias. We propose a new procedure
that augments 2SRI with an individual frailty and prove that it is consistent
under certain conditions. The finite sample-size behavior is studied across a
broad set of conditions via Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, the proposed
methodology is used to estimate the average effect of carotid endarterectomy
versus carotid artery stenting on the mortality of patients suffering from
carotid artery disease. Results suggest that the 2SRI-frailty estimator
generally reduces the bias of both point and interval estimators compared to
