    This report details the results of a two-year study of the impacts of rapid immigration growth in two Detroit neighborhoods, concluding that welcoming and supporting immigrants is a concrete, highly effective strategy to stabilize and revitalize disinvested neighborhoods with tangible benefits to both new and long-term residents. One of the first studies ever to look at the impacts of rapid immigration growth on neighborhoods and long-term residents, the findings could be applied to many post-industrial cities across the U.S. The study was conducted by Global Detroit in partnership with Alan Mallach and Data Driven Detroit

    Michigan: We Are All Migrants Here

    This report is a clarion call from two Michigan economic development organizations to recognize and support the significant contributions that immigrants are making to the revival of the Michigan economy. The authors are concerned that the gains that the state has made in creating an immigrant-friendly environment are being undermined by policies of the Trump Administration. Although immigrants constitute only 6 percent of the state's population, they punch above their weight on many indices of economic activity, including being 25 percent of the state's high-tech start-ups and running firms that employ over 150,000 other people. Immigrants have also brought an infusion of talent and labor to offset the decline in the native-born population over the last 15 years. The authors summarize the many initiatives the state has taken with the support of state, municipal, and industry leaders to promote the state as an immigrant-friendly destination, including the creation of the Michigan Office of New Americans by Republican Governor Rick Snyder. However, policies of the Trump Administration, such as the scaling back of H-1B visas, the travel ban affecting predominantly Muslim countries, and reductions in refugee admissions, threaten to reverse these gains

    The program of quantizing the gravitational field with the help of affine field variables is continued. For completeness, a review of the selection criteria that singles out the affine fields, the alternative treatment of constraints, and the choice of the initial (before imposition of the constraints) ultralocal representation of the field operators is initially presented. As analogous examples demonstrate, the introduction and enforcement of the gravitational constraints will cause sufficient changes in the operator representations so that all vestiges of the initial ultralocal field operator representation disappear. To achieve this introduction and enforcement of the constraints, a well characterized phase space functional integral representation for the reproducing kernel of a suitably regularized physical Hilbert space is developed and extensively analyzed.Comment: LaTeX, 42 pages, no figure

    Ohio Landlord-Tenant Reform Revisited

    The gentle readers may be surprised by the analogy suggested between the reform of landlord-tenant law and the experience of Alice and the Queen. However, the events surrounding the enactment of Amended Substitute Senate Bill 103 were as perplexing as those in Lewis Carroll\u27s story. Those opposing real reform, principally the real estate industry, were successful in weakening the proposed legislation. Consequently, the primary goal of the sponsors of landlord-tenant legislation in Ohio was not met by the legislation finally enacted. As this Article will demonstrate, the interpretation of the Act by the courts of Ohio has proven true the claims of some of the proponents of the reform legislation who likened the final enacted bill to the March Hare: a little bit late and somewhat confusing. The purpose of this Article is to review this legislation and its interpretation by the Ohio courts over the past thirteen years. Like Alice, the gentle reader may conclude that despite all this running, everything\u27s just as it was. For this reason, the authors will propose legislative amendments to the Act necessary to bring into more equitable balance the landlord-tenant relationship in Ohio

    A microscopic three-cluster model with nuclear polarization applied to the resonances of 7Be and the reaction 6Li(p,3He)4He

    A microscopic model for three-cluster configurations in light nuclei is presented. It uses an expansion in terms of Faddeev components for which the dynamic eqations are derived. The model is designed to investigate binary channel processes in a compound system. Gaussian and oscillator bases are used to expand the wave function and to represent appropriate boundary conditions. We study the effect of cluster polarization on ground and resonance states of 7Be, and on the astrophysical S-factor of the reaction 6Li(p,3He)4He.Comment: 20 pages, 8 Postscript figures, uses elsart1p.sty, submitted to Nucl.     World War 3 Illustrated: Land and Liberty

    The “World War 3 Illustrated” portfolio was part of the “Graphic Radicals” exhibit celebrating over 30 years of left-wing political cartoons from the cartooning magazine “World War 3 Illustrated”. Lifelong friends and artistic activists Peter Kuper and Seth Tobocman launched the magazine in 1979-1980. The exhibition tackled global and local events the artists had scrutinized and experienced, such as the Gulf War, Hurricane Katrina, Tomkins Square Riot, the Balkins genocide, and 9/11. The Exhibition ran from Sept. 30th to Oct. 31st at Grand Forks’ Colonel Eugene E. Myers Gallery in Hughes Fine Arts Center, and the Third Street Gallery on Kittson. The exhibit was free and open to the public. The prints in this portfolio were developed and printed at UND through Sundog Multiples. UND Professors Fink and Jonientz, as well as Brian Fricke from the Department of Art & Design along with Professor Ommen from Communications met and raised funds to bring the exhibition to UND. Kuper first visited UND in 2008 as a featured author of the Writer’s Conference. After the conference, Kuper agreed to produce a three-color lithograph with UND students. This venture ended with the original Kuper prints “Lucha Libre”, “This is Not a Pipe”, “Give It Up!” and “The Helmsman”. Kuper and Sundog have since collaborated on other projects, leading Kuper to offer UND the opportunity of exhibiting “Graphic Radicals”.https://commons.und.edu/uac-all/3981/thumbnail.jp
