Ecological Aspects of a Wood Turtle, Glyptemys insculpta, Population at the Northern Limit of its Range in Québec
As part of a conservation research initiative, a population of Wood Turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) at the northern limit of its range was studied to ascertain characteristics of its demographics, morphometrics, density, mortality, feeding, and mating activities. Turtles were captured and marked during the activity period in 1996 and 1997. In addition, 20 individuals were radio-tracked weekly. A total of 188 turtles was captured and the size of the population in the study area was estimated at 238 turtles. The estimated population density based on this calculation is 0.44 turtles/ha. This is less than other studies indicating that population densities are greater in southern populations. Turtles from this population were large (carapace length of males=214.5 ± 4.21 mm, females=201.1 ± 10.88 mm) which supports the hypothesis that turtle size is negatively correlated with number of frost free days. The sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1. Juvenile turtles accounted for 31.4% of the population. Observations of feeding habits support the claim that Wood Turtles are opportunistic omnivores. Of the 35 mating or courtship events observed, 77 % occurred in the fall and half of them between 11:00 and 13:00. Although limb and tail injuries and parasites were observed on many turtles, no dead turtles were observed. This last result, combined with the high rate of recruitment and even sex ratio suggests that this population is stable, making it an ideal population with which to make comparisons with other studies in areas where the species could be in decline
Sinking properties of some phytoplankton shapes and the relation of form resistance to morphological diversity of plankton â an experimental study
Form resistance (Phi) is a dimensionless number expressing how much slower or faster a particle of any form sinks in a fluid medium than the sphere of equivalent volume. Form resistance factors of PVC models of phytoplankton sinking in glycerin were measured in a large aquarium (0.6 x 0.6 x 0.95 m). For cylindrical forms, a positive relationship was found between Phi and length/ width ratio. Coiling decreased Phi in filamentous forms. Form resistance of Asterionella colonies increased from single cells up to 6-celled colonies than remained nearly constant. For Fragilaria crotonensis chains, no such upper limit to Phi was observed in chains of up to 20 cells ( longer ones were not measured). The effect of symmetry on Phi was tested in 1 - 6-celled Asterionella colonies, having variable angles between the cells, and in Tetrastrum staurogeniaeforme coenobia, having different spine arrangements. In all cases, symmetric forms had considerably higher form resistance than asymmetric ones. However, for Pediastrum coenobia with symmetric/asymmetric fenestration, no difference was observed with respect to symmetry. Increasing number and length of spines on Tetrastrum coenobia substantially increased Phi. For a series of Staurastrum forms, a significant positive correlation was found between arm-length/cell-width ratio and Phi: protuberances increased form resistance. Flagellates (Rhodomonas, Gymnodinium) had a Phi 1. The highest value ( Phi = 8.1) was established for a 20-celled Fragilaria crotonensis chain. Possible origin of the so-called 'vital component' ( a factor that shows how much slower viable populations sink than morphologically similar senescent or dead ones) is discussed, as is the role of form resistance in evolution of high diversity of plankton morphologies
How does dense phase CO2 influence the phase behaviour of block copolymers synthesised by dispersion polymerisation?
Block copolymers synthesised in supercritical CO2 dispersion undergo in situ self-assembly which can result in a range of nanostructured microparticles. However, our previous study revealed that copolymers with different block combinations possessed different microphase separated morphologies at identical block volume fractions. In this paper, we follow up those initial observations. By examining the phase behaviour of a selection of structurally diverse block copolymers, we explore the structural factors which influence the conflicting self-assembly behaviours. The composition dependence of the morphology is found to be strongly related to the CO2-philicity of the second block relative to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Whilst PMMA-b-poly(benzyl methacrylate) (PBzMA) and PMMA-b-poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate) (PDMAEMA) phase behaviour follows traditional diblock copolymer phase diagrams, PMMA-b-poly(styrene) (PS) and PMMA-b-poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP), which comprise blocks with the greatest contrast in CO2-philicity, self-assemble into unexpected morphologies at several different block volume fractions. The morphology of these copolymers in the microparticulate form was found to revert to the predicted equilibrium morphology when the microparticles were re-cast as films and thermally annealed. These findings provide strong evidence that CO2 acts as a block-selective solvent during synthesis. The CO2-selectivity was exploited to fabricate various kinetically trapped non-lamellar morphologies in symmetrical PMMA-b-PS copolymers by tuning the ratio of polymer:CO2. Our data demonstrate that CO2 can be exploited as a facile process modification to control the self-assembly of block copolymers within particles
The impact of liquidity on the capital structure: a case study of Croatian firms
Background: Previous studies have shown that in some countries, liquid assets increased leverage while in other countries liquid firms were more frequently financed by their own capital and therefore were less leveraged. Objectives: The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of liquidity on the capital structure of Croatian firms. Methods/Approach: Pearson correlation coefficient is applied to the test on the relationship between liquidity ratios and debt ratios, the share of retained earnings to capital and liquidity ratios and the relationship between the structure of current assets and leverage. Results: A survey has been conducted on a sample of 1058 Croatian firms. There are statistically significant correlations between liquidity ratios and leverage ratios. Also, there are statistically significant correlations between leverage ratios and the structure of current assets. The relationship between liquidity ratios and the short-term leverage is stronger than between liquidity ratios and the long-term leverage. Conclusions: The more liquid assets firms have, the less they are leveraged. Longterm leveraged firms are more liquid. Increasing inventory levels leads to an increase in leverage. Furthermore, increasing the cash in current assets leads to a reduction in the short-term and the longterm leverage
A general piecewise multi-state survival model: Application to breast cancer
Multi-state models are considered in the field of survival analysis for modelling
illnesses that evolve through several stages over time. Multi-state models can be
developed by applying several techniques, such as non-parametric, semi-parametric
and stochastic processes, particularly Markov processes. When the development of
an illness is being analysed, its progression is tracked periodically. Medical reviews
take place at discrete times, and a panel data analysis can be formed. In this paper, a
discrete-time piecewise non-homogeneous Markov process is constructed for
modelling and analysing a multi-state illness with a general number of states. The
model is built, and relevant measures, such as survival function, transition probabilities, mean total times spent in a group of states and the conditional probability of
state change, are determined. A likelihood function is built to estimate the parameters and the general number of cut-points included in the model. Time-dependent
covariates are introduced, the results are obtained in a matrix algebraic form and the
algorithms are shown. The model is applied to analyse the behaviour of breast
cancer. A study of the relapse and survival times of 300 breast cancer patients who
have undergone mastectomy is developed. The results of this paper are implemented

Halide Mixing and Phase Segregation in Cs2AgBiX6 (X=Cl, Br, I) Double Perovskites from Cesium-133 Solid-State NMR and Optical Spectroscopy
All-inorganic double perovskites (elpasolites) are a promising potential alternative to lead halide perovskite in optoelectronic applications. While halide mixing is a well-established strategy for band gap tuning, little is known about halide mixing and phase segregation phenomena in double perovskites. Here, we synthesize a wide range of singleâ and mixedâhalide Cs2AgBiX6 (X=Cl, Br, I) double perovskites using mechanosynthesis and probe their atomic-level microstructure using 133Cs solid-state MAS NMR. We show that mixed Cl/Br materials form pure phases for any Cl/Br ratio while Cl/I and Br/I mixing is only possible with-in a narrow range of halide ratios (<3 mol% I) and leads to a complex mixture of products for higher ratios. We characterize the optical properties of the resulting materials and show that halide mixing does not lead to an appreciable tunability of the PL emission. We find that iodide incorporation is particularly pernicious in that it quenches the PL emission intensity and radiative charge carrier lifetimes for iodide ratios as low as 0.3 mol%. Our study shows that sol-id-state NMR, in conjunction with optical spectroscopies, provides a comprehensive understanding of the structure-activity relationships, halide mixing and phase segregation phenomena in Cs2AgBiX6 (X=Cl, Br, I) double perovskites
Tax Loss Offset Restrictions - Last Resort for the Treasury? An Empirical Evaluation of Tax Loss Offset Restrictions Based on Micro Data
In Germany, the tax loss carry-forward of corporations significantly increased over the last decade. At the same time only a small percentage of losses have been effectively offset in the following periods. One potential reason for this puzzle is that stricter loss offset restrictions have been introduced in recent years. I use a newly developed micro simulation model for the corporate sector in Germany to evaluate the fiscal effects of these restrictions. Additionally, distributional breakdowns concerning the amounts of tax loss carry-forward and the effects of loss offset restrictions are provided. I find that the restrictions on the use of tax loss carryback are rather ineffective while the newly introduced minimum taxation considerably increases yearly tax revenue by 1.1 billion
Quantification of drug metabolising enzymes and transporter proteins in the paediatric duodenum via LC-MS/MS proteomics using a QconCAT technique
Characterising the small intestine absorptive membrane is essential to enable prediction of the systemic exposure of oral formulations. In particular, the ontogeny of key intestinal Drug Metabolising Enzymes and Transporter (DMET) proteins involved in drug disposition needs to be elucidated to allow for accurate prediction of the PK profile of drugs in the paediatric cohort. Using pinch biopsies from the paediatric duodenum (n = 36; aged 11 months to 15 years), the abundance of 21 DMET proteins and two enterocyte markers were quantified via LC-MS/MS. An established LCMS nanoflow method was translated to enable analysis on a microflow LC system, and a new stable-isotope-labelled QconCAT standard developed to enable quantification of these proteins. Villin-1 was used to standardise abundancy values. The observed abundancies and ontogeny profiles, agreed with adult LC-MS/MS-based data, and historic paediatric data obtained via western blotting. A linear trend with age was observed for duodenal CYP3A4 and CES2 only. As this work quantified peptides on a pinch biopsy coupled with a microflow method, future studies using a wider population range are very feasible. Furthermore, this DMET ontogeny data can be used to inform paediatric PBPK modelling and to enhance the understanding of oral drug absorption and gut bioavailability in paediatric populations
Retail ring-fencing of banks and its implications
Financial stability remains a key theme globally in view of the Euro zone debt crisis. The latest strategy by Germany and France is to ring-fence the crisis among the PIIGS countries (Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Italy and Spain). In the United Kingdom, the big four major banks have all responded to the Independent Commission of Bankings interim report key recommendation: ring-fencing retail operations into a separate subsidiary of any bank that wishes to operate in the United Kingdom. The report has clearly discussed the advantages and disadvantages of various types of subsidiarisation. Retail ring-fencing is considered a compromise as full subsidiarisation is too costly and operational subsidiarisation is too minimal. The Independent Commission of Banking published its final report on 12 September 2011. They recommended ring-fencing retail banking and a 10 per cent equity baseline. This article focuses on structural reforms of UK banks. It aims to address the question of financial stability from a wider European perspective. The first question is whether cross-border retail banking in the European Economic Area (EEA) is best served by branches or subsidiaries? The second question concerns the legality of setting up subsidiaries in the European Union (EU). Although there are no legal problems for UK-based banks setting up subsidiaries for their retail activities, there might be a legal hurdle for requiring foreign banks setting up subsidiaries in the United Kingdom. The third question concerns EU cross-border banking regulation and supervision. Are the passporting system and the home country supervisory approach still applicable in this post-financial crisis era? Many factors influence the choice of setting up branches or subsidiaries. However, the general position is that branches are more suited for wholesale/investment activities because of ease of funds transfer. Subsidiaries are more suitable for retail banking because of the limited liability principle and extensive local network. Effective cross-border banking must be accompanied by effective supervision and resolution regimes. The passporting concept under EU law and home country dominance are somewhat dated post-financial crisis. Host country control should play a dominant part in financial regulation, especially in the light of the importance of subsidiaries and the limited liability principle associated with them. The Icelandic bank crisis and collapse of Lehman Brothers International Europe illustrate the importance of host country control. Finally, the author argues that requiring banks to hold its retail activities in the form of subsidiaries in another European country is necessary to achieve financial stability. © 2012 Macmillan Publishers Ltd
