Cryptoendolithic growth of the red alga Galdieria sulphuraria in volcanic areas

The habitat of the acido- and thermophilic red algae Galdieria sulphuraria and Cyanidium caldarium was examined in acidic hot sulphur springs in the vicinity of Naples (Italy). These species grew on soil and rocks, but a large part of the populations was cryptoendolithic. The endolithic algal layer (1-3 mm in thickness) was covered by amorphous silica (1-2 mm in thickness) containing traces of hydrotroilite (FeS. nH(2)O) and elemental sulphur. Organotrophic bacteria and fungi were not found in the algal layer. Light penetration measurements showed that 0.1-1% of the sunlight reached the upper part of the algal layer. Thus, low-light-adapted algae should be able to perform some photosynthesis in this endolithic habitat. Under conditions where light is even more limited, e.g. in winter or after darkening of the covering layer, many of the cells might not survive. Aqueous extracts of these algae are excellent growth substrates for Galdieria sulphuraria. Therefore, we propose that compounds released from dead cells in the endolithic layer are used by the surrounding Galdieria cells for heterotrophic metabolism. This would increase their chance of surviving prolonged periods under detrimental conditions

Index-aware model order reduction: LTI DAEs in electric networks

    No full text
Purpose - Model order reduction (MOR) has been widely used in the electric networks but little has been done to reduce higher index differential algebraic equations (DAEs). The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - Most methods first do an index reduction before reducing a higher DAE but this can lead to a loss of physical properties of the system. Findings - The paper presents a MOR method for DAEs called the index-aware MOR (IMOR) which can reduce a DAE while preserving its physical properties such as the index. The feasibility of this method is tested on real-life electric networks. Originality/value - MOR has been widely used to reduce large systems from electric networks but little has been done to reduce higher index DAEs. Most methods first do an index reduction before reducing a large system of DAEs but this can lead to a loss of physical properties of the system. The paper presents a MOR method for DAEs called the IMOR which can reduce a DAE while preserving its physical properties such as the index. Index-aware model order reduction for differential-algebraic equations

We introduce a model order reduction (MOR) procedure for differential-algebraic equations, which is based on the intrinsic differential equation contained in the starting system and on the remaining algebraic constraints. The decoupling procedure in differential and algebraic part is based on the projector and matrix chain which leads to the definition of tractability index. The differential part can be reduced by using any MOR method, we use Krylov-based projection methods to illustrate our approach. The reduction on the differential part induces a reduction on the algebraic part. In this paper, we present the method for index-1 differential-algebraic equations. We implement numerically this procedure and show numerical evidence of its validity
