The Comparison of American and Chinese Family Education: Taking Modern Family as an Example

    Get PDF
This paper compares some important family education phenomena in the TV serial--Modern Family which are obviously different in China. Then, this paper gives explanation from three main perspectives of beliefs, historical as well as welfare origin. And some implications are provided so as to help Chinese parents cast off obsolete thoughts and support all-round development of Chinese children

Comorbidities of Medicare Beneficiaries with Alzheimer\u27s Disease in Florida, 2010

Comorbidity associated with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is highly prevalent but largely understudied. In this study, we sought to determine 1) the prevalence of AD by race (White, African American, and Hispanics); 2) 20 chronic conditions’ commonly comorbid with AD and the prevalence, mortality rate, and health care expenditure of common AD and comorbid condition by race. A sample of 86,875 Florida 2010 Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older with 12 months of fee-for-service (FFS) enrollment were used in this study. In the present analysis, the prevalence of AD was highest among elderly Hispanic beneficiaries. Among 20 chronic diseases, heart disease (Heart Failure, Ischemic Heart Disease, Atrial Fibrillation) were the most prevalent, most deadly, and most costly comorbidities associated with AD. Hypertension and Hyperlipidemia were highly prevalent comorbidities. Persons with AD had an increased risk of depression. Persons with AD and Chronic Kidney Disease were associated with a high likelihood of mortality and high health care costs. Hip Fracture was one of the most costly comorbid conditions, and was also associated with a high mortality rate for Whites and Hispanics. The results revealed a comprehensive picture of certain comorbid conditions associated with AD and suggested the need for further investigation in this area

From Revolutionary to Civil Activism: May Fourth Intellectual Guo Moruo and Post-Cultural Revolution Artist Ai Weiwei

    Get PDF
The beginning of the twentieth century in China is marked by intellectual-led revolutionary activism that looks for a modern national collective that distinguishes from the dynastic past and the semi-colonized current. Intellectual Guo Moruo is devoted to the historical trend through a dual-identity as a cultural leader and a lyrical poet. This element of activism has evolved along with the twentieth century up until post-Cultural Revolution China, when the coming of the Internet and digital technology allowed for new forms of activism, such as online mobilization and digital-camera videos as critical social engagement. Artist Ai Weiwei emerges as a leading civil activist at the time. However, how the different historical times produce room for different forms of activist engagement, and how the new form of activist practices in return shapes the societal body, remains unstudied. This project examines modern Chinese activism through a comparative study of Guo Moruo’s revolutionary activism in the May Fourth era and Ai Weiwei’s civil activism in the post-Cultural Revolution times. Special focus is paid to Guo’s literary practice in lyrical poetry and his cultural practice as a leader in a literary society (Creation Society), as well as Ai’s civil practice in online activist projects, and his visual practice in the documentary-making post Sichuan earthquake. This project decodes the various powers exemplified through different activist forms, particularly poetry and documentaries, in order to understand the complexity embedded in China’s modern activism that has witnessed every critical transition in China’s long century of modernization

Fixed-Length Payload Encoding for Low-Jitter Controller Area Network Communication

    Get PDF
The controller area network (CAN) bit stuffing mechanism, albeit essential to ensure proper receiver clock synchronization, introduces a significant, payload-dependent jitter on message response times, which may worsen the timing accuracy of a networked control system. Accordingly, several approaches to overcome this issue have been discussed in literature. This paper presents a novel software payload encoding scheme, which is able to guarantee that no stuff bits will ever be added to the data field by the CAN controller during transmission and, hence, lessens jitters considerably. Particular care has been put in its practical implementation and its subsequent evaluation to show how the simplicity and inherent high performance of the scheme make it suitable even for low-cost, embedded architectures

Hsa_circ_0026344 suppresses gastric cancer progression via modulating the miR-1290/FBP2 axis

Background. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a novel type of noncoding RNAs and play important roles in tumorigenesis, including gastric cancer (GC). However, the functions of most circRNAs remain poorly understood. In our study, we mainly learn the influence of hsa_circ_0026344 (circ_0026344) in GC progression. Methods. Circ_0026344, miR-1290 and Fructose1,6-bisphosphatase 2 (FBP2) expression was determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). GC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were detected by colony formation, 5-ethynyl2’-deoxyuridine (EdU), and transwell assays, respectively. The interaction between circ_0026344 and miR-1290 complex was evaluated by RNA pull-down assay. The interaction of miR-1290 with circ_0026344 or FBP2 was detected using dual-luciferase reporter assay. A xenograft model was established to determine the effect of circ_0026344 on GC tumor growth in vivo. Results. Circ_0026344 expression was dramatically decreased in GC cells and tissues. Circ_0026344 overexpression inhibited GC cell proliferation, migration and invasion. MiR-1290 was predicted as a target of circ_0026344 and miR-1290 overexpression attenuated the anti-tumor effect of circ_0026344 on GC cells. Furthermore, we predicted FBP2 as the target of miR1290. FBP2 knockdown reversed the effects of circ_0026344 knockdown on GC cell malignant behaviors. Functional analysis showed that circ_0026344 upregulated FBP2 expression via miR1290. Additionally, in vivo studies demonstrated that circ_0026344 suppressed GC tumor progression. Conclusion. In conclusion, circ_0026344 inhibited GC cell proliferation via the miR-1290/FBP2 axis, which might provide a new therapeutic target for GC patients
