    Scanning tunneling microscopy of lnAs/GaSb superlattices: Subbands, interface roughness, and interface asymmetry

    Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy is used to characterize InAs/GaSb superlattices, grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. Roughness at the interfaces between InAs and GaSb layers is directly observed in the images, and a quantitative spectrum of this roughness is obtained. Electron subbands in the InAs layers are resolved in spectroscopy. Asymmetry between the interfaces of InAs grown on GaSb compared with GaSb grown on In As is seen in voltage-dependent imaging. Detailed spectroscopic study of the interfaces reveals some subtle differences between the two in terms of their valence-band onsets and conduction-band state density. These differences are interpreted in a model in which the GaSb on InAs interface has an abrupt InSb-like structure, but at the InAs on GaSb interface some Sb grading occurs into the InAs overlayer

    Perturbed Three Vortex Dynamics

    It is well known that the dynamics of three point vortices moving in an ideal fluid in the plane can be expressed in Hamiltonian form, where the resulting equations of motion are completely integrable in the sense of Liouville and Arnold. The focus of this investigation is on the persistence of regular behavior (especially periodic motion) associated to completely integrable systems for certain (admissible) kinds of Hamiltonian perturbations of the three vortex system in a plane. After a brief survey of the dynamics of the integrable planar three vortex system, it is shown that the admissible class of perturbed systems is broad enough to include three vortices in a half-plane, three coaxial slender vortex rings in three-space, and `restricted' four vortex dynamics in a plane. Included are two basic categories of results for admissible perturbations: (i) general theorems for the persistence of invariant tori and periodic orbits using Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser and Poincare-Birkhoff type arguments; and (ii) more specific and quantitative conclusions of a classical perturbation theory nature guaranteeing the existence of periodic orbits of the perturbed system close to cycles of the unperturbed system, which occur in abundance near centers. In addition, several numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the validity of the theorems as well as indicating their limitations as manifested by transitions to chaotic dynamics.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, submitted to the Journal of Mathematical Physic

    Elastodynamics of radially inhomogeneous spherically anisotropic elastic materials in the Stroh formalism

    A method is presented for solving elastodynamic problems in radially inhomogeneous elastic materials with spherical anisotropy, i.e.\ materials such that cijkl=cijkl(r)c_{ijkl}= c_{ijkl}(r) in a spherical coordinate system r,θ,ϕ{r,\theta,\phi}. The time harmonic displacement field u(r,θ,ϕ)\mathbf{u}(r,\theta ,\phi) is expanded in a separation of variables form with dependence on θ,ϕ\theta,\phi described by vector spherical harmonics with rr-dependent amplitudes. It is proved that such separation of variables solution is generally possible only if the spherical anisotropy is restricted to transverse isotropy with the principal axis in the radial direction, in which case the amplitudes are determined by a first-order ordinary differential system. Restricted forms of the displacement field, such as u(r,θ)\mathbf{u}(r,\theta), admit this type of separation of variables solutions for certain lower material symmetries. These results extend the Stroh formalism of elastodynamics in rectangular and cylindrical systems to spherical coordinates.Comment: 15 page

    Local tunneling spectroscopy as signatures of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in s- and d-wave Superconductors

    The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states for two-dimensional s- and d-wave superconductors (s- and d-SC) are self-consistently studied under an in-plane magnetic field. While the stripe solution of the order parameter (OP) is found to have lower free energy in s-SC, a square lattice solution appears to be energetically more favorable in the case of d-SC. At certain symmetric sites, we find that the features in the local density of states (LDOS) can be ascribed to two types of bound states. We also show that the LDOS maps for d-SC exhibit bias-energy-dependent checkerboard patterns.     Factors Associated with Depression among University Students in Malaysia: A Cross-sectional Study

    Depression is a recurrent mental health problem among younger demographics, and university students are particularly susceptible owing to stress, workload and independent living, amongst other factors.  This study explores the prevalence of depression and the factors influencing depression among university students in Malaysia. This cross-sectional study involved 1,023 university students (response rate 90.4%). Depression was assessed using the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Short Depression Scale (CESD -10). Binary logistic regression was used to determine predictors of depression based on sociodemographic, physiological, lifestyle, and health characteristics. Approximately 30% of respondents experienced depression, and 4.4% of this category suffered severe depression. This study demonstrates that instances of depression were 2.52 times higher (95% CI: 1.71-3.71) in second year students compared to first year students, and 1.63 times higher (95% CI: 1.08-2.45) in students staying outside campus compared to students staying inside campus. Students from poor, not well-off, and quite well-off family background had 15.26 (95% CI: 2.77-84.88), 4.85 (95% CI: 1.01-23.34) and 5.62 times (95% CI: 1.16-27.25) higher chance for depression than wealthier students, respectively. Students with mild, moderate, and severe sleeping problems were 2.50 times (95% CI: 1.61-3.88), 3.34 times (95% CI: 2.18-5.11), and 3.66 times (95% CI: 1. 93 -6. 94) more likely to be depressed than those without sleeping problem, respectively. Students with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were 1.42 times higher (95% CI: 1.07-2.56) to suffer from depression. This study concludes that higher education institutions need to pay special attention to the mental health of those students especially those in their second year, living off campus, from lower economic backgrounds, with sleeping problem, or suffering PTSD

In this paper, we consider the contributions of these new particles to the observables, which are related to the top quark pair (ttˉt\bar{t}) production at the LHC.     Non-Markovian Fermionic Stochastic Schr\"{o}dinger Equation for Open System Dynamics

    In this paper we present an exact Grassmann stochastic Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the dynamics of an open fermionic quantum system coupled to a reservoir consisting of a finite or infinite number of fermions. We use this stochastic approach to derive the exact master equation for a fermionic system strongly coupled to electronic reservoirs. The generality and applicability of this Grassmann stochastic approach is justified and exemplified by several quantum open system problems concerning quantum decoherence and quantum transport for both vacuum and finite-temperature fermionic reservoirs.     The past decade has seen a significant interest on the problem of inducing decision trees that take account of costs of misclassification and costs of acquiring the features used for decision making. This survey identifies over 50 algorithms including approaches that are direct adaptations of accuracy based methods, use genetic algorithms, use anytime methods and utilize boosting and bagging. The survey brings together these different studies and novel approaches to cost-sensitive decision tree learning, provides a useful taxonomy, a historical timeline of how the field has developed and should provide a useful reference point for future research in this field
