Within the male-dominated economic landscape of Marquette\u27s founding era, many women turned to the illicit business of selling sex to make a living. In the absence of self-created primary sources, court case records and newspaper accounts dating between 1870 and 1943 reveal small pieces of the lives of dozens of such women. Yet while the stories of underground miners and northwoods lumberjacks have been studied in detail, these sex workers have been ignored and forgotten almost entirely; a broader social history, without moral bias, can account for many of the women who worked alongside the men who dominate our historical record. While attempts to eradicate these workers from the community have persisted throughout history, a preliminary review of the available archival evidence suggests the large scale of their impact in the economic, social, and legal development of the region. This article summarizes the most fascinating tidbits from those scattered records, hopefully paving the way for a new, all-encompassing social history of the Marquette area

Coping with Enrollment and Revenue Declines in Assumption Community Unit District #9

As we proceed toward the end of the twentieth century, it has become increasingly clear that the future of public education in the United States is somewhat uncertain. This uncertainty is due to a number of causes: concern over discipline, lack of parental interest, decreasing enrollment, lack of quality teachers, and decreasing supplies of tax monies to fund the schools. Some of these reasons have more impact in one area than another, but the effect can be determined easily. Schools are faced with program cuts and diminution of services for the student population. This field study addresses this problem as it pertains to the Assumption Community School District #9. This district is currently faced with the two-edged problem of enrollment decline and decreases in equalized assessed valuation of the real estate in the school district. The results of these problems have the potential to be catastrophic for such a small school district. This paper will explain the present situation in this district, project what may happen in the next several years, and try to offer some intelligent alternatives for solving the problem or at least softening the blow as much as possible. In order to accomplish these tasks, the paper will explain in the financial picture, both present and future, in depth. Enrollment trends are predicted as accurately as possible, given all the information available. Suggestions are made for the future direction of the district based on the data presented and discussions with local and area school officials. Possible avenues for the future of the district are presented and the flaws and pitfalls of each, as well as the advantages, are noted. It is the hope of the author that the report of the district\u27s successful referendum passage may be useful to other districts in planning tax hike referenda

Breast Cancer Associated Metastasis is Significantly Increased in a Model of Autoimmune Arthritis

Chronic inflammation is known to play a role in cancer initiation, promotion, and metastasis. However, the mechanism by which inflammation promotes metastasis is still unclear. We evaluated if chronic inflammation induced by autoimmune arthritis may contribute to increased breast cancer-associated metastasis. We report a three-fold increase in lung metastasis and a significant increase in the incidence of bone metastasis in the pro-arthritic mice compared to control mice. The metastatic breast tumors in turn augment the severity of arthritis resulting in a vicious cycle that increases both bone destruction and metastasis. Enhanced neutrophilic and granulocytic infiltration in lungs and bone of the pro-arthritic mice and subsequent increase in circulating levels of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-17, IL-6, VEGF, and TNF-α were the underlying factors contributing to the increased metastasis. The data clearly has important clinical implications for patients diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer
