    Borderplex Economic Outlook: 2005-2007

    Get PDF
Economic conditions remain healthy in the borderplex. That assessment is reflected by growth in output, business receipts, and personal incomes. Greater numbers of jobs allow the El Paso unemployment rate to trend downward as the local labor market strengthens. Although consumer indebtedness remains high, improved income and jobs performance generate additional retail activity, with total sales surpassing $8.3 billion in 2006. Expansion at Fort Bliss causes strong levels of positive net migration and accelerated population growth. That translates into greater volumes of residential construction in all years of the forecast. Because of the decision to allow real water rates to erode for a year or more, aggregate water consumption in El Paso is expected to increase following four consecutive years of declines. The outlooks for Las Cruces, Ciudad Juarez, and Chihuahua City are also relatively favorable.Econometric Forecast; Mexico Border Region

Retrospective Analysis of the Maquiladora Export Industry in Mexico

The Mexican in-bond assembly, or maquiladora manufacturing sector, has taken its fair share of lumps in recent years. Collectively, such obstacles have contributed to periodic employment declines in this industry. A major factor at the turn of this century was ongoing de-regulation of the Chinese economy during a multi-year period of congressional gridlock in Mexico City. In general, predictions of the demise of the maquiladora industry in Mexico have turned out to be premature. However, this industry remains hampered by excessive red tape and fiscal uncertainty. Unfortunately, these facotrs also cause the Mexican economy as a whole to perform at less than full capcity.Mexico, Maquiladora Exports, Border Regions

    Cross border cargo vehicle flows

    No full text
Increases in international merchandise trade plus growth in the northern Mexico maquiladora sector have caused the volume of cargo vehicle flows through border metropolitan areas to expand in recent decades. In order to examine whether the trends associated with these developments can be successfully modeled, short-term time series characteristics of cross-border cargo vehicle traffic through El Paso, Texas are analyzed. Econometric methodologies employed include both univariate and transfer function ARIMA analysis. Data are drawn for the January 1980 - December 1999 sample period. Empirical results indicate that Ciudad Juárez maquiladora employment, El Paso nonagricultural employment, inflation adjusted exchange rate, Mexican industrial activity, and U.S. industrial performance play important roles in determining month-to-month fluctuations in border region cargo vehicle traffic flows
