    Endophthalmitis after strabismus surgery: incidence and outcome in relation to age, operated eye muscle, surgical technique, scleral perforation and immune state

    Purpose: Identify risk factors for endophthalmitis after strabismus surgery (EASS) and relate these to incidence and outcome. Methods: Ophthalmologists, who had operated, diagnosed or treated EASS, completed a case record form with 71 questions in six domains: Preoperative, Surgery, Perforation, Postoperative, Outcome and Experts’ opinion. To estimate the age-specific incidence per number of strabismus operations in the Netherlands during 1994-2013, the age distribution of Dutch cases was compared with the age-specific rates of strabismus surgery in the Dutch Registry of Strabismus Operations and with population data. Exploratory data analysis was performed. The immune state was evaluated in six patients. Five enucleated eyes were studied histopathologically. Results: None of the 26 patients (27 eyes with EASS) were between 9 and 65 years old, except for one patient with retinal haemorrhage followed by endophthalmitis. In the Netherlands during 1994-2013, the rate of EASS was approximately one per 11 000 strabismus operations, but one per 4300 for children aged 0–3 and one per 1000 for patients 65 and older. Endophthalmitis was diagnosed on postoperative day 1–4 in children aged 0–3. In all 15 children aged 0–5, the 16 affected eyes were phthisical, eviscerated or enucleated. The involved eye muscle had been recessed in 25 of 27 cases. It was a medial rectus in 15 of 16 children aged 0–6. It was a lateral (6), inferior (2) or medial (1) rectus in elderly. Scleral perforation went unnoticed in all children (no record in three) and in two of seven elderly (no record in two). Histopathology showed transscleral scarring compatible with scleral perforation in four patients but, in a two-year-old girl who had EASS together with a transient medial rectus palsy, the sclera underneath the former suture tract was not perforated but did contain the long posterior ciliary artery. Conclusions: Endophthalmitis after strabismus surgery (EASS) affects children and elderly, with a grave outcome in young children. It occurs after recession of the medial rectus muscle in children, and it may occur without scleral perforation. Age and perforation influence many other parameters that determine the occurrence and fulminance of EASS

    V magistrskem delu se ukvarjam z doživljanjem selitve v dom za starejše z vidika starostnikov ter raziskujem njihove potrebe in soočanje z izzivi, s katerimi se srečujejo v tem obdobju. V teoretičnih izhodiščih najprej predstavim obdobje starosti in staranje ter nato opišem specifične lastnosti in potrebe, značilne za obdobje starosti. Nadaljujem s pregledom družbene umeščenosti starosti in opišem možnosti oskrbe za starejše v slovenskem prostoru, s poudarkom na domovih za starejše. Na koncu se posvetim procesu selitve v dom za starejše (DSO) in predstavim nekaj primerov dobrih praks s področja selitve v DSO iz različnih držav po svetu. Glavni namen raziskave, predstavljene v empiričnem delu, je bil raziskati izkušnje starostnikov s selitvijo v dom za starejše. Želela sem ugotoviti, kakšne so (bile) njihove potrebe v posameznih obdobjih selitve, na katere izzive so v tem procesu naleteli ter kaj jim je bilo ob tem v pomoč in kaj ne. Ob tem sem želela ugotoviti, kako uspešno DSO, ki je vključen v raziskavo, odgovarja na potrebe starostnikov v procesu selitve ter katere strategije dela DSO starostniki prepoznavajo kot dobre ali pa si pri njih želijo spremembe. V raziskavi sem uporabila kvalitativni raziskovalni pristop. Rezultati kažejo, da je proces selitve za starostnike čustveno zelo razgiban proces, v času katerega se soočajo z negotovostjo, osamljenostjo, izgubo občutka doma, prilagajanjem na nov način življenja in iskanjem lastne identitete. V tem obdobju najbolj prideta do izraza potreba po osebnih odnosih ter potreba po zdravju in dobrem počutju. Pri soočanju z izzivi selitve sta najpomembnejša podporna dejavnika urejeni in ljubeči odnosi z bližnjimi ter možnosti izbire znotraj institucij. Selitev jim najbolj otežujejo predsodki in negativne predstave o življenju v DSO ter težave pri navajanju na novo okolje ali novega sostanovalca. Glede na rezultate ugotavljam, da bi bilo v prihodnosti dolgotrajne oskrbe starostnikom smiselno čim dlje omogočiti življenje v domačem okolju, ob selitvi v dom za starejše pa naj ti delujejo v smeri zagotavljanja avtonomije, ohranjanja odnosov z bližnjimi in prilagajanja oskrbe individualnim potrebam starostnikov.In my master\u27s thesis, I address the experience of moving to a care home from the perspective of elderly individuals and explore their needs and the challenges they face during this period. In the theoretical framework, I first present the period of old age and aging, and then describe the specific characteristics and needs typical of this stage of life. I continue with an overview of the social placement of aging and describe the care options for the elderly in Slovenia, with a focus on care homes. Finally, I focus on the process of moving to a care home and present some examples of good practices related to moving to a care home from different countries around the world. The main aim of the research presented in the empirical part was to explore the experiences of the elderly with the process of moving to a care home. I wanted to understand what their needs are (or have been) at different stages of the relocation, what challenges they encountered in this process, what helped them and what did not. I also aimed to determine how successfully the care home involved in the research responds to the needs of the elderly during the relocation process and which working strategies of the care home the elderly recognize as effective or wish to see changed. I used a qualitative research approach in this study. The results indicate that the process of moving is an emotionally complex experience for the elderly, during which they face uncertainty, loneliness, loss of a sense of home, adjustment to a new way of life, and the search for their own identity. During this period, the need for personal relationships and the need for health and well-being are most pronounced. In facing the challenges of relocation, the two most important supportive factors are stable and loving relationships with loved ones and the availability of choices within institution. Prejudices and negative perceptions about life in a care home, as well as difficulties in adapting to a new environment or new roommates, make the move particularly challenging. Based on the findings, I conclude that in the future of long-term care, it would be sensible to enable elderly individuals to live in their home environment for as long as possible, and when moving to a care home, these facilities should aim to ensure autonomy, maintaining relationships with loved ones, and adapting care to the individual needs of the elderly

    Magistrsko delo raziskuje razvoj mode, konfekcijskih številk, trajnostne mode, multifunkcionalna oblačila. Čeprav je označevanje oblačil s številkami praktično in nujno za hitri nakup ter hitro proizvodnjo, se v današnjem času vedno bolj pojavljajo oblačila, ki niso vezana na konfekcijske številke. Začetni del naloge govori o razlikah med visoko in konfekcijsko modo ter o razvoju konfekcijske mode. Med raziskovanjem in načrtovanjem kolekcije sem se posvečala trajnostni modi, katere koncept temelji na kvaliteti in ne kvantiteti proizvoda. Ker sodobna ženska potrebuje zračna, udobna in elegantna oblačila, sem kolekcijo ONIX zasnovala tako, da omogoča več stilov. Narejena je v eni velikostni številki s pridihom subkulture grunge. Namen naloge je bil načrtovati in izdelati oblačila, ki so ženskam dostopna v prodajalnah ali pa preko svetovnega spleta kot modna znamka Rose Moth.The master\u27s thesis analyses fashion development, clothing size labels, sustainable fashion and multifunctional garments. Even though it is practical and necessary to mark clothing with size labels for fast purchase and fast mass production, nowadays more and more garments appear that do not apply to size labels. The first part of the thesis deals with the differences between high fashion and ready-to-wear fashion and its development. While researching and planning my collection I devoted myself to sustainable modes whose concept is based on quality rather than quantity of the product. Since a modern woman needs airy, comfortable and elegant clothes, my collection ONIX is designed in such a way that it allows several fashion styles. It is created in only one size with a hint of the grunge subculture. The purpose of the thesis was to plan and manufacture garment collections accessible to women in shops or on the web, such as fashion brand Rose Moth

    Diplomsko delo je analiza in primerjava likov matere v avtobiografskih romanih Hiša večera Mire Mihelič, Saga o kovčku Nedeljke Pirjevec in Malahorna Nade Gaborovič. Mira Mihelič je ena prvih ženskih avtoric avtobiografskega pisanja pri nas, poleg nje sem izbrala še dve pisateljici, ki v središče svojih romanov postavljata sebe in svojo družino ‒ Nado Gaborovič in Nedeljko Pirjevec. Poleg njihovih življenjskih zgodb in vsebin treh izbranih romanov so v diplomskem delu predstavljene tudi avtobiografske zvrsti, ki se pojavljajo v navedenih delih. Diplomskemu delu je priložen popis spominov mojih prednic, ki je nastal kot zaključna naloga pri predmetu Sociologija spolov pod mentorstvom izr. prof. Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik. Tudi ti spomini opisujejo ženske kot matere in njihovo življenje v prejšnjem stoletju. Čeprav so ženski liki med seboj zelo različni, imajo skupne lastnosti, ki izhajajo iz dejstva, da so matere. Pri tem je lik matere Mire Mihelič pravo nasprotje vsem ostalim, ki se žrtvujejo za svoje otroke.The thesis is an analysis and comparison of the mother caracters in the autobiographical novels Hiša večera written by Mira Mihelič, Saga o kovčku by Nedeljka Pirjevec and Malahorna by Nada Gaborovič. Mira Mihelič is one of our first female authors who dealt with autobiographical writing, beside her I chose two writers whose novels focus on themselves and their families – Nada Gaborovič and Nedelja Pirjevec. In addition to their life stories and the content of the three selected novels the thesis presents the autobiographical genre, appearing in the selected novels. The thesis also contains the annex in which the memories of my ancestors are collected. These memories were written as a seminar work at the subject Sociology of Gender under the supervision of Assoc. prof. Miriam Milharčič Hladnik. They also describe women as mothers and their lives in the previous century. Although female characters are very different, they all have common characteristics that come from the fact that they are mothers. The mother character from Mira Mihelič is quite the opposite in comparison to the other mother figures who sacrifice everything for their children

    Metric characteristics of Children-parents relationship questionnaire (VOS): a preliminary study

    The purpose of the article is to introduce the Children-parents relationship questionnaire (VOS) and to present its metric characteristics. The questionnaire is based on parental styles of D. Baumrind (1967) and 3D model of parental styles developed by Milivojević and others (2004). The questionnaire was developed under assumption that relationship between children and their parents influences educational achievement of children. Results on convenience sample (N = 333) of seventh, eighth and ninth grade students in Slovenia show a three dimensional structure of the questionnaire: (a) authoritative parental style and autonomy, (b) authoritarian parental style and (c) rewarding. Questionnaires' reliability in terms of internal consistency (,72 > α < ,95) as well as sensitivity (average r = ,67) proved to be sufficient. Our results show significant gender differences in perceived authoritative parental style and autonomy as well as low association between school grades and the perceived relationship

    Practices of Planning as a Reflection of Teaching and Learning Concepts in ECEC : The Cases of Finland and Slovenia

    The aim of this study was to identify pedagogical planning practices and thus recognise the prevailing teaching and learning concepts in ECEC in Finland and Slovenia. Pedagogical planning is one of the key elements of quality for ECEC in both countries. The study followed a qualitative paradigm. Data were collected by carrying out semi-structured thematic interviews with ECEC teachers in Finland and Slovenia and analysed using content analysis. Regarding the planning practices, the results show that ECEC teachers (i) mostly plan in teams or tandems and (ii) consider the curriculum, that is, the ECEC national document, as well as the children’s voices, in planning. Through an analysis of pedagogical planning practice, three learning and teaching concepts were recognised (i) transmissive pedagogy; (ii) constructivist-developmentalism, with a transmissive notion of the aim of education; and (iii) participatory pedagogy.peerReviewe
