    Predicting species‐specific responses of fungi to climatic variation using historical records

    Although striking changes have been documented in plant and animal phenology over the past century, less is known about how the fungal kingdom's phenology has been changing. A few recent studies have documented changes in fungal fruiting in Europe in the last few decades, but the geographic and taxonomic extent of these changes, the mechanisms behind these changes, and their relationships to climate are not well understood. Here, we analyzed herbarium data of 274 species of fungi from Michigan to test the hypotheses that fruiting times of fungi depend on annual climate and that responses depend on taxonomic and functional groups. We show that the fungal community overall fruits later in warmer and drier years, which has led to a shift toward later fruiting dates for autumn‐fruiting species, consistent with existing evidence. However, we also show that these effects are highly variable among species and are partly explained by basic life‐history characteristics. Resulting differences in climate sensitivities are expected to affect community structure as climate changes. This study provides a unique picture of the climate dependence of fungal phenology in North America and an approach for quantifying how individual species and broader fungal communities will respond to ongoing climate change.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/100145/1/gcb12278.pd

    Genetic analysis of post‐epizootic amphibian chytrid strains in Bolivia: Adding a piece to the puzzle

    The evolutionary history and dispersal pattern of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), an emergent fungal pathogen responsible for the decline and extinctions of many species of amphibians worldwide, is still not well understood. In South America, the tropical Andes are known as an important site for amphibian diversification, but also for being a place where hosts are at greater risk of chytridiomycosis. In an attempt to understand the history and the geographic pattern of Bd‐associated amphibian declines in Bolivia, we isolated Bd from hosts at two locations that differ in their chronology of Bd prevalence and host survival outcome, the cloud forests of the Amazonian slopes of the Andes and Lake Titicaca in the altiplano. We genotyped Bd from both locations and sequenced the genome from the cloud forest isolate and then compared them to reference sequences of other Bd strains across the world. We found that the Bolivian chytrid isolates were nearly genotypically identical and that they belong to the global panzootic lineage (Bd‐GPL). The Bolivian Bd strain grouped with other tropical New World strains but was closest to those from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Our results extend the presence of Bd‐GPL to the central Andes in South America and report this hypervirulent strain at Lago Titicaca, where Bd has been detected since 1863, without evidence of amphibian declines.     The Structure, Kinematics and Physical Properties of the Molecular Gas in the Starburst Nucleus of NGC 253

    We present 5.2" x 2.6" resolution interferometry of CO J=1-0 emission from the starburst galaxy NGC 253. The high spatial resolution of these new data, in combination with recent high resolution maps of 13CO, HCN and near-infrared emission, allow us for the first time to link unambiguously the gas properties in the central starburst of NGC 253 with its bar dynamics. We confirm that the star formation results from bar-driven gas flows as seen in "twin peaks" galaxies. Two distinct kinematic features are evident from the CO map and position-velocity diagram: a group of clouds rotating as a solid body about the kinematic center of the galaxy, and a more extended gas component associated with the near-infrared bar. We model the line intensities of CO, HCN and 13CO to infer the physical conditions of the gas in the nucleus of NGC 253. The results indicate increased volume densities around the radio nucleus in a twin-peaks morphology. Compared with the CO kinematics, the gas densities appear highest near the radius of a likely inner Linblad resonance, and slightly lead the bar minor axis. This result is similar to observations of the face-on, twin-peaks galaxy NGC 6951, and is consistent with models of starburst generation due to gas inflow along a bar.Comment: To appear in the ApJ, 28 pages, 12 figure file

    The presence of Bd zoosporangia in skin samples of the dead individual coming from the eastern warm branch, which reach temperatures of up to 26°C, suggests the occurrence of a Bd strain adapted to higher temperatures (Bd does not grow well above 25°C: Piotrowsky et al. 2004). Since the two pairs of branches differ by almost 4°C, and knowing that temperature may influences patterns of Bd infection, future field-studies should assess the prevalence of the Bd infection in subpopulations of Valcheta Frog inhabiting at different environmental conditions along the stream.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

    Phylogeography of the Solanaceae-infecting Basidiomycota fungus Rhizoctonia solani AG-3 based on sequence analysis of two nuclear DNA loci

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The soil fungus <it>Rhizoctonia solani </it>anastomosis group 3 (AG-3) is an important pathogen of cultivated plants in the family Solanaceae. Isolates of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3 are taxonomically related based on the composition of cellular fatty acids, phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and beta-tubulin gene sequences, and somatic hyphal interactions. Despite the close genetic relationship among isolates of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3, field populations from potato and tobacco exhibit comparative differences in their disease biology, dispersal ecology, host specialization, genetic diversity and population structure. However, little information is available on how field populations of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3 on potato and tobacco are shaped by population genetic processes. In this study, two field populations of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3 from potato in North Carolina (NC) and the Northern USA; and two field populations from tobacco in NC and Southern Brazil were examined using sequence analysis of two cloned regions of nuclear DNA (pP42F and pP89).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Populations of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3 from potato were genetically diverse with a high frequency of heterozygosity, while limited or no genetic diversity was observed within the highly homozygous tobacco populations from NC and Brazil. Except for one isolate (TBR24), all NC and Brazilian isolates from tobacco shared the same alleles. No alleles were shared between potato and tobacco populations of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3, indicating no gene flow between them. To infer historical events that influenced current geographical patterns observed for populations of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3 from potato, we performed an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and a nested clade analysis (NCA). Population differentiation was detected for locus pP89 (Ί<sub><it>ST </it></sub>= 0.257, significant at P < 0.05) but not for locus pP42F (Ί<sub><it>ST </it></sub>= 0.034, not significant). Results based on NCA of the pP89 locus suggest that historical restricted gene flow is a plausible explanation for the geographical association of clades. Coalescent-based simulations of genealogical relationships between populations of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3 from potato and tobacco were used to estimate the amount and directionality of historical migration patterns in time, and the ages of mutations of populations. Low rates of historical movement of genes were observed between the potato and tobacco populations of <it>R. solani </it>AG-3.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The two sisters populations of the basidiomycete fungus <it>R. solani </it>AG-3 from potato and tobacco represent two genetically distinct and historically divergent lineages that have probably evolved within the range of their particular related Solanaceae hosts as sympatric species.</p

    The Spitzer c2d Survey of Nearby Dense Cores: III: Low Mass Star Formation in a Small Group, L1251B

    We present a comprehensive study of a low-mass star-forming region,L1251B, at wavelengths from the near-infrared to the millimeter. L1251B, where only one protostar, IRAS 22376+7455, was known previously, is confirmed to be a small group of protostars based on observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The most luminous source of L1251B is located 5" north of the IRAS position. A near-infrared bipolar nebula, which is not associated with the brightest object and is located at the southeast corner of L1251B, has been detected in the IRAC bands. OVRO and SMA interferometric observations indicate that the brightest source and the bipolar nebula source in the IRAC bands are deeply embedded disk sources.Submillimeter continuum observations with single-dish telescopes and the SMA interferometric observations suggest two possible prestellar objects with very high column densities. Outside of the small group, many young stellar object candidates have been detected over a larger region of 12' x 12'. Extended emission to the east of L1251B has been detected at 850 micron; this "east core" may be a site for future star formation since no point source has been detected with IRAC or MIPS.     Getting physicians to open the survey: little evidence that an envelope teaser increases response rates

    BACKGROUND: Physician surveys are an important tool to assess attitudes, beliefs and self-reported behaviors of this policy relevant group. In order for a physician to respond to a mailed survey, they must first open the envelope. While there is some evidence that package elements can impact physician response rates, the impact of an envelope teaser is unknown. Here we assess this by testing the impact of adding a brightly colored "25incentive"stickertotheoutsideofanenvelopeonresponseratesandnonresponsebiasinasurveyofphysicians.METHODS:Inthesecondmailingofasurveyassessingphysiciansâ€Čmoralbeliefsandviewsoncontroversialhealthcaretopics,initialnonrespondentswererandomlyassignedtoreceiveasurveyinanenvelopewithacolored"25 incentive" sticker to the outside of an envelope on response rates and nonresponse bias in a survey of physicians. METHODS: In the second mailing of a survey assessing physicians' moral beliefs and views on controversial health care topics, initial nonrespondents were randomly assigned to receive a survey in an envelope with a colored "25 incentive" sticker (teaser group) or an envelope without a sticker (control group). Response rates were compared between the teaser and control groups overall and by age, gender, region of the United States, specialty and years in practice. Nonresponse bias was assessed by comparing the demographic composition of the respondents to the nonrespondents in the experimental and control condition. RESULTS: No significant differences in response rates were observed between the experimental and control conditions overall (p = 0.38) or after stratifying by age, gender, region, or practice type. Within the teaser condition, there was some variation in response rate by years since graduation. There was no independent effect of the teaser on response when simultaneously controlling for demographic characteristics (OR = 0.875, p = 0.4112). CONCLUSIONS: Neither response rates nor nonresponse bias were impacted by the use of an envelope teaser in a survey of physicians in the United States
