Induced Gravity II: Grand Unification
As an illustration of a renormalizable, asymptotically-free model of induced
gravity, we consider an gauge theory interacting with a real scalar
multiplet in the adjoint representation. We show that dimensional transmutation
can occur, spontaneously breaking to while
inducing the Planck mass and a positive cosmological constant, all proportional
to the same scale . All mass ratios are functions of the values of coupling
constants at that scale. Below this scale (at which the Big Bang may occur),
the model takes the usual form of Einstein-Hilbert gravity in de Sitter space
plus calculable corrections. We show that there exist regions of parameter
space in which the breaking results in a local minimum of the effective action,
and a {\bf positive} dilaton from two-loop corrections
associated with the conformal anomaly. Furthermore, unlike the singlet case we
considered previously, some minima lie within the basin of attraction of the
ultraviolet fixed point. Moreover, the asymptotic behavior of the coupling
constants also lie within the range of convergence of the Euclidean path
integral, so there is hope that there will be candidates for sensible vacua.
Although open questions remain concerning unitarity of all such renormalizable
models of gravity, it is not obvious that, in curved backgrounds such as those
considered here, unitarity is violated. In any case, any violation that may
remain will be suppressed by inverse powers of the reduced Planck mass.Comment: 44 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. v2 has new discussion concerning

Zero modes in de Sitter background
There are five well-known zero modes among the fluctuations of the metric of
de~Sitter (dS) spacetime. For Euclidean signature, they can be associated with
certain spherical harmonics on the sphere, viz., the vector
representation of the global isometry. They appear, for example,
in the perturbative calculation of the on-shell effective action of dS space,
as well as in models containing matter fields. These modes are shown to be
associated with collective modes of corresponding to certain coherent
fluctuations. When dS space is embedded in flat five dimensions they may
be seen as a legacy of translation of the center of the sphere. Rigid
translations of the -sphere on leave the classical action invariant
but are unobservable displacements from the point of view of gravitational
dynamics on Thus, unlike similar moduli, the center of the sphere is not
promoted to a dynamical degree of freedom. As a result, these zero modes do not
signify the possibility of physically realizable fluctuations or flat
directions for the metric of dS space. They are not associated with Killing
vectors on but can be with certain non-isometric, conformal Killing forms
that locally correspond to a rescaling of the volume element
For convenience, we frame our discussion in the context of renormalizable
gravity, but the conclusions apply equally to the corresponding zero modes in
Einstein gravity. We expect that these zero modes will be present to all orders
in perturbation theory. They will occur for Lorentzian signature as well, so
long as the hyperboloid is locally stable, but there remain certain
infrared issues that need to be clarified. We conjecture that they will appear
in any gravitational theory having dS background as a locally stable solution
of the effective action, regardless of whether additional matter is included.Comment: v4, 28pages, no figures; final journal form, minor changes in text

Guadecitabine, in combination with Cyclophosphamide, promotes anti- cancer immunity in BALB/c mice bearing 4T1 mouse mammary carcinoma
Background: The extremely high mortality rate of patients diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer makes it one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Due to the heterogenous nature of tumors, complete clearance is not achieved and clonal selection occurs resulting in tumor cells evading the immune system. I aim to design a therapeutic intervention that is able to elicit an effective immune response against the tumor and instill immunological memory to eradicate primary and metastatic lesions. I hypothesize that the combination of Guad and Cyp will synergize and promote anticancer immunity via increased expression of neo-tumor antigens and depletion of MDSCs and T-regs. Methods: Guadecitabine (Guad), is a second-generation DNA methyltransferase inhibitor (DMNTi) that has been reported to increase antigenicity and deplete myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC’s). Cyclophosphamide (Cyp) is a chemotherapy that has been shown to deplete regulatory T-cells (T-regs). Both MDSD’s and T-regs suppress antitumor immunity. BALB/c mice were challenged with 4T1 tumor cells subcutaneously in the mammary fat pad region. 4T1-bearing mice were administered low-dose Guad and Cyp for ten consecutive days. Tumor growth curves, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) were measured and MDSC’s and T- regs levels were assessed by flow cytometry. Results: Results from this experiment showed significant synergy between Guad and Cyp with both drugs reducing the tumor size over monotherapy. Conclusions: Further analysis of the data along with future experiments will elucidate if this synergy is driven by the depletion of MDSC’s and T-regs alone or the increase in tumor antigenicity inducing increased numbers of TILs.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1078/thumbnail.jp
Revision of some ophiuroid records (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea) from Argentina
The taxonomy of some ophiuroids reported from off Argentina, western Antarctica and the SW Atlantic Ocean is reviewed. The species Amphilepis sanmatiensis, known only from the small holotype, is a synonym of Amphioplus lucyae. This synonymy removes the only reported endemic ophiuroid from Argentina. The species name ?Ophiacantha ingrata Koehler, 1923? used for specimens from South Georgia is invalid; the specimens are likely to belong to one of two cryptic species within the O. vivipara complex. Specimens of Amphiura joubini reported from Argentina are re-identified as Amphiura princeps, and specimens of Ophiactis amator from the Antarctic Peninsula are re-identified as Ophiactis asperula.Fil: Brogger, Martin Ignacio. Naturalness and Dimensional Transmutation in Classically Scale-Invariant Gravity
We discuss the nature of quantum field theories involving gravity that are
classically scale-invariant. We show that gravitational radiative corrections
are crucial in the determination of the nature of the vacuum state in such
theories, which are renormalisable, technically natural, and can be
asymptotically free in all dimensionless couplings. In the pure gravity case,
we discuss the role of the Gauss-Bonnet term, and we find that Dimensional
Transmutation (DT) \`a la Coleman-Weinberg leads to extrema of the effective
action corresponding to nonzero values of the curvature, but such that these
extrema are local maxima. In even the simplest extension of the theory to
include scalar fields, we show that the same phenomenon can lead to extrema
that are local minima of the effective action, with both non-zero curvature and
non-zero scalar vacuum expectation values, leading to spontaneous generation of
the Planck mass. Although we find an asymptotically free (AF) fixed point
exists, unfortunately, no running of the couplings connect the region of DT to
the basin of attraction of the AF fixed point. We also find there remains a
flat direction for one of the conformal modes. We suggest that in more
realistic models AF and DT could be compatible, and that the same scalar vacuum
expectation values could be responsible both for DT and for spontaneous
breaking of a Grand Unified gauge group.Comment: 49 pages, 4 figures, JHEP3; v2 includes additional references, one

The Effective Potential, the Renormalisation Group and Vacuum Stability
We review the calculation of the the effective potential with particular
emphasis on cases when the tree potential or the
renormalisation-group-improved, radiatively corrected potential exhibits
non-convex behaviour. We illustrate this in a simple Yukawa model which
exhibits a novel kind of dimensional transmutation. We also review briefly
earlier work on the Standard Model. We conclude that, despite some recent
claims to the contrary, it can be possible to infer reliably that the tree
vacuum does not represent the true ground state of the theory.Comment: 23 pages; 5 figures; v2 includes minor changes in text and additional
