Ethnographies of the imagined, the imaginary and the critically real: Blackness, whiteness, the north of England and rugby league
Rugby league is part of the white, working-class (male) culture of the north of England, and is a sport that is used by its supporters to (re)produce both an imagined community of nostalgic northernness and an imaginary community of locally situated hegemonically masculine belonging. The invented traditions of its origins link the game to a white, working-class twentieth-century culture of mills, pits, terraced houses and pubs; a culture increasingly marginalised, reshaped and challenged in this century. In this paper we use two medium-term, ethnographic research projects on rugby league (one from Spracklen; the other an on-going project by Timmins) to explore northernness, blackness, whiteness and our own roles in the ethnographies as 'black' and 'white' researchers researching 'race' and identity in a community that remains (but not exclusively) a place for a working-class whiteness to be articulated. We argue that our own histories and identities are pivotal in how we are accepted as legitimate ethnographers and insiders, but those histories and identities also posea critically real challenge to us and to those in the community of rugby league with whom we interact. © 2010 Taylor & Francis

A survey of particle contamination in electronic devices
The experiences are given of a number of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Space and Missile System Organization (SAMSO) contractors with particle contamination, and the methods used for its prevention and detection, evaluates the bases for the different schemes, assesses their effectiveness, and identifies the problems associated with each. It recommends specific short-range tests or approaches appropriate to individual part-type categories and recommends that specific tasks be initiated to refine techniques and to resolve technical and application facets of promising solutions
Every student counts: promoting numeracy and enhancing employability
This three-year project investigated factors that influence the development of undergraduates’ numeracy skills, with a view to identifying ways to improve them and thereby enhance student employability. Its aims and objectives were to ascertain: the generic numeracy skills in which employers expect their graduate recruits to be competent and the extent to which employers are using numeracy tests as part of graduate recruitment processes; the numeracy skills developed within a diversity of academic disciplines;
the prevalence of factors that influence undergraduates’ development of their numeracy skills; how the development of numeracy skills might be better supported within undergraduate curricula; and the extra-curricular support necessary to enhance undergraduates’ numeracy skills
A distributed programming environment for Ada
Despite considerable commercial exploitation of fault tolerance systems, significant and difficult research problems remain in such areas as fault detection and correction. A research project is described which constructs a distributed computing test bed for loosely coupled computers. The project is constructing a tool kit to support research into distributed control algorithms, including a distributed Ada compiler, distributed debugger, test harnesses, and environment monitors. The Ada compiler is being written in Ada and will implement distributed computing at the subsystem level. The design goal is to provide a variety of control mechanics for distributed programming while retaining total transparency at the code level
Measurement of Sivers Asymmetries for Di-jets in \sqrt{s}=200 GeV pp Collisions at STAR
Measurement of the transverse spin dependence of the di-jet opening angle in
pp collisions at sqrt{s}=200 GeV has been performed by the STAR collaboration.
An analyzing power consistent with zero has been observed over a broad range in
pseudorapidity sum of the two jets with respect to the polarized beam
direction. A non-zero (Sivers) correlation between transverse momentum
direction of partons in the initial state and transverse spin orientation of
the parent proton has been previously observed in semi-inclusive deep inelastic
scattering (SIDIS).
The present measurements are much smaller than deduced from predictions made
for STAR di-jets based on non-zero quark Sivers functions deduced from SIDIS,
and furthermore indicate that gluon Sivers asymmetries are comparably small.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, talk presented at SPIN 2006, Kyoto, October 200
Longitudinal Double Spin Asymmetry in Inclusive Jet Production at STAR
This contribution reports on the first measurement of the longitudinal
double-spin asymmetry for the inclusive production of jets in
polarized proton-proton collisions at . The data
were collected with STAR at RHIC in the years 2003 and 2004, and correspond to
a sampled integrated luminosity of with beam
polarizations up to 45%. The results on cover jet transverse momenta
and agree with perturbative QCD evaluations
based on deep-inelastic scattering parametrizations for the gluon polarization
in the proton. The results disfavor large positive gluon polarization in the
