Conceptions about teaching and learning of expressivity in music among Higher Education teachers and students
This work aimed to analyse factors related to conceptions and beliefs about expressivity in music among students and teachers. A questionnaire with 11 Likert-type items was developed covering the main factors included in the literature of teaching-learning of expressivity and emotion in music. Through exploratory factor analysis three factors were identified: expressive technique (ET), emotional expression (EE), and self-learning of expressivity (SLE). Comparisons between teachers and students showed that teachers had significant higher scores in EE with no differences in ET or SLE, although the effect size for SLE was high. The three factors are proposed as a tool for the assessment of conceptions of expressivity and its learning in both teachers and advanced students of music for teaching and research objectives
Modeling and Simulation of the Second-Generation Orion Crew Module Air Bag Landing System
Air bags were evaluated as the landing attenuation system for earth landing of the Orion Crew Module (CM). An important element of the air bag system design process is proper modeling of the proposed configuration to determine if the resulting performance meets requirements. Analysis conducted to date shows that airbags are capable of providing a graceful landing of the CM in nominal and off-nominal conditions such as parachute failure, high horizontal winds, and unfavorable vehicle/ground angle combinations. The efforts presented here surround a second generation of the airbag design developed by ILC Dover, and is based on previous design, analysis, and testing efforts. In order to fully evaluate the second generation air bag design and correlate the dynamic simulations, a series of drop tests were carried out at NASA Langley's Landing and Impact Research (LandIR) facility. The tests consisted of a full-scale set of air bags attached to a full-scale test article representing the Orion Crew Module. The techniques used to collect experimental data, construct the simulations, and make comparisons to experimental data are discussed
Evidence of Double Phonon Excitations in ^{16}O + ^{208}Pb Reaction
The fusion cross-sections for ^{16}O + ^{208}Pb, measured to high precision,
enable the extraction of the distribution of fusion barriers. This shows a
structure markedly different from the single-barrier which might be expected
for fusion of two doubly-closed shell nuclei. The results of exact coupled
channel calculations performed to understand the observations are presented.
These calculations indicate that coupling to a double octupole phonon excited
state in ^{208}Pb is necessary to explain the experimental barrier

Comparison of beliefs about teaching and learning of emotional expression in music performance between Spanish and English HE students of music
Despite an increase in research on emotional expression in music and its teaching and learning, little is known about the beliefs and conceptualizations that students hold regarding musical expression, and how they differ depending on educational context. To address this gap, a comparison was made between a sample of 79 UK and 117 Spanish higher education students of music, who were asked to indicate their beliefs about expressivity, most useful instructional methods to develop expressive performance, and factors that influence expressiveness and its teaching and learning. Results indicated agreement, but also several significant differences across cohorts. UK students endorsed the idea more strongly that musical context (i.e., piece and instrument) influences expressivity and the choice of teaching strategy, while Spanish students linked expressivity more strongly to particular music-emotional characteristics. Both groups considered using technical explanation as the better method for teaching expressivity, whilst modelling was considered the worst. On the other hand, they agreed that the choice of the teaching approach should depend on the age of the student with modelling being preferred for younger age groups, and technique for adults only. These results highlight differences in the understanding of musical expressivity that parallel academic debates on emotional vs. stylistic expressiveness

Versatile silicon-waveguide supercontinuum for coherent mid-infrared spectroscopy
Infrared spectroscopy is a powerful tool for basic and applied science. The
molecular spectral fingerprints in the 3 um to 20 um region provide a means to
uniquely identify molecular structure for fundamental spectroscopy, atmospheric
chemistry, trace and hazardous gas detection, and biological microscopy. Driven
by such applications, the development of low-noise, coherent laser sources with
broad, tunable coverage is a topic of great interest. Laser frequency combs
possess a unique combination of precisely defined spectral lines and broad
bandwidth that can enable the above-mentioned applications. Here, we leverage
robust fabrication and geometrical dispersion engineering of silicon
nanophotonic waveguides for coherent frequency comb generation spanning 70 THz
in the mid-infrared (2.5 um to 6.2 um). Precise waveguide fabrication provides
significant spectral broadening and engineered spectra targeted at specific
mid-infrared bands. We use this coherent light source for dual-comb

Action, emotion, and music-colour synaesthesia: an examination of sensorimotor and emotional responses in synaesthetes and non-synaesthetes
Synaesthesia has been conceptualised as a joining of sensory experiences. Taking a holistic, embodied perspective, we investigate in this paper the role of action and emotion, testing hypotheses related to (1) changes to action-related qualities of a musical stimulus affect the resulting synaesthetic experience; (2) a comparable relationship exists between music, sensorimotor and emotional responses in synaesthetes and the general population; and (3) sensorimotor responses are more strongly associated with synaesthesia than emotion. 29 synaesthetes and 33 non-synaesthetes listened to 12 musical excerpts performed on a musical instrument they had first-hand experience playing, an instrument never played before, and a deadpan performance generated by notation software, i.e., a performance without expression. They evaluated the intensity of their experience of the music using a list of dimensions that relate to sensorimotor, emotional or synaesthetic sensations. Results demonstrated that the intensity of listeners’ responses was most strongly influenced by whether or not music is performed by a human, more so than familiarity with a particular instrument. Furthermore, our findings reveal a shared relationship between emotional and sensorimotor responses among both synaesthetes and non-synaesthetes. Yet it was sensorimotor intensity that was shown to be fundamentally associated with the intensity of the synaesthetic response. Overall, the research argues for, and gives first evidence of a key role of action in shaping the experiences of music-colour synaesthesia
