Introduction. Chronic subdural haematomas (cSDH) are one of the most common types of traumatic intracranial lesion. Burr-hole craniostomy followed by closed-system drainage has become the treatment of choice. However, there is no definitive indication as to the number of burr-holes needed. Our aim was to to assess clinical and radiological outcomes taking into account the number of burr-holes made.Material and methods. A retrospective single-centre-study was performed including patients treated for cSDH by performing burr-hole craniostomy from 2012 to 2018. After collecting data regarding demographics, comorbidities, and clinical and radiological records, haematomas were grouped depending on the number of burr-holes made (Group 1: single burr-hole; Group 2: double burr-holes). Clinical and radiological outcomes were statistically compared between groups, as well as the main complications.Results. After collecting 171 patients, 205 cSDHs were analysed. 173 were treated with a single burr-hole (we called these Group 1) and 32 with double burr-holes (Group 2). No differences in preoperative characteristics were found between the groups, except for diabetes mellitus and previous antiplatelet/anticoagulation treatment. No radiological differences were found regarding haematoma volume (p = 0.7) or thickness (p = 0.3). Surgical site infection (p = 0.13), recurrence (p = 0.6), acute rebleeding (p = 0.25) and mortality (p = 0.94) were assessed without evidencing statistically significant differences. At the time of hospital discharge, most patients showed a remarkable clinical improvement, regardless of the number of burr-holes made (p = 0.7).Conclusions. This study suggests that cSDH can be efficiently evacuated by a single burr-hole craniostomy, a less invasive and shorter surgical procedure with quite good clinical outcomes and a low rate of complications

TODDLER Project, Lifelong Learning Programme created opportunities for knowledge transfer and exchange through focusing on the development of provisions for toddlers and investigations of different approaches promoting learning in a child-centred way. Module materials explored strategies and good practice of provision of high-quality education and care for disadvantaged toddlers. A framework created a report on ‘Toddler in Europe the Context’ on ECEC systems and approaches used to support diverse and disadvantaged toddlers. Then explored topic areas of ‘Language Support in Multicultural Settings’, Supporting Wellbeing’ and ‘Enhancing Parental Involvement’ with ‘Educating the Reflective Practitioner’ underpinning all of this. The module materials were successfully trialled and completed being made available on the TODDLER website as a Course Reader, Course Lecture Materials, and resources. KU led the Report and Case Studies: Promoting the Wellbeing of Toddler’s within the European Union creating an innovative pedagogical approach ‘Reflective Story Boards’ using a description of the context of the strategy followed by photos with explanations and supported with further description /explanation making visible to all stakeholders how educators promote wellbeing for toddlers. The final report highlighted the Reflective Story Boards contribution reaching the goal of showing the educational potential of high quality ECEC (Final Report, 2011)

Abstract: The urge to increase the performance of company processes is ongoing. Surveys indicate however, that many companies do not measure the controlling performance with a defined set of key performance indicators. This paper will analyze three categories of controlling key performance indicators based on their degree of measurability and their impact on the financial performance of a company. Potential measures to optimize the performance of the controlling department will be outlined and put in a logical order. The aligning of the controlling activity with the respective management expectation will be discussed as a key success factor of this improvement project

This thesis addresses ontology-driven prognosis assistance using knowledge representation and reasoning for very large microscopic medical images. One particular medical application in which prognosis assistance is needed is the breast cancer grading. Althrough this is considered the key assessment tool in prognosis of modern pathology pratice, the main problems of the manual procedure are: time constraint, the need of knowledge and attention. More over, the lack of formal standardized semantic representation for the indexing and classification of terminology and the lack of an inference mechanism to assist the grading are key issues of the domain. To this end, we propose a qualitativ ontological representation of breast cancer grading, an application ontology entlited Breast Cancer Grading Ontology (BCGO) based on OWL-DL and SWRL formalisms. Using this approach, the thesis also tackles the semantic gap between the high-level semantic concepts and the low-level image features. Additionally, we propose a spatial theory support for the representation of the spatial relations between the spatial concepts of the breast cancer grading. This ontology is integrated into a cognitive microscope framework MICO, guiding the image exploration, semantic indexing and retrieval of the microscopic imagesBESANCON-BU Sciences Staps (250562103) / SudocSudocFranceF
