Graphics for uncertainty
Graphical methods such as colour shading and animation, which are widely available, can be very effective in communicating uncertainty. In particular, the idea of a âdensity stripâ provides a conceptually simple representation of a distribution and this is explored in a variety of settings, including a comparison of means, regression and models for contingency tables. Animation is also a very useful device for exploring uncertainty and this is explored particularly in the context of flexible models, expressed in curves and surfaces whose structure is of particular interest. Animation can further provide a helpful mechanism for exploring data in several dimensions. This is explored in the simple but very important setting of spatiotemporal data
CLTs and asymptotic variance of time-sampled Markov chains

conditions for time-sampled Markov chains and derive a spectral formula
for the asymptotic variance. Using these results we compare efficiency of
Barker's and Metropolis algorithms in terms of asymptotic variance
Transforming teacher education, an activity theory analysis
This paper explores the work of teacher education in England and Scotland. It seeks to locate this work within conflicting socio-cultural views of professional practice and academic work. Drawing on an activity theory framework that integrates the analysis of these contradictory discourses with a study of teacher educatorsâ practical activities, including the material artefacts that mediate the work, the paper offers a critical perspective on the social organisation of university-based teacher education. Informed by Engeströmâs activity theory concept of transformation, the paper extends the discussion of contradictions in teacher education to consider the wider socio-cultural relations of the work. The findings raise important questions about the way in which teacher education work within universities is organised and the division of labour between schools and universities

Academic freedom in Europe: time for a Magna Charta?
This paper is a preliminary attempt to establish a working definition of academic freedom for the European Union states. The paper details why such a definition is required for the European Union and then examines some of the difficulties of defining academic freedom. By drawing upon experience of the legal difficulties beset by the concept in the USA and building on previous analyses of constitutional and legislative protection for academic freedom, and of legal regulations concerning institutional governance and academic tenure, a working definition of academic freedom is then derived. The resultant definition which, it is suggested, could form the basis for a European Magna Charta Libertatis Academicae, goes beyond traditional discussions of academic freedom by specifying not only the rights inherent in the concept but also its accompanying duties, necessary limitations and safeguards. The paper concludes with proposals for how the definition might be tested and carried forward
Self-assembly and charge transport properties of a benzobisthiazole end-capped with dihexylthienothiophene units
The synthesis of a new conjugated material is reported; BDHTTâBBT features a central electron-deficient benzobisthiazole capped with two 3,6-dihexyl-thieno[3,2-b]thiophenes. Cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the HOMO (â5.7 eV) and LUMO (â2.9 eV) levels. The solid-state properties of the compound were investigated by X-ray diffraction on single-crystal and thin-film samples. OFETs were constructed with vacuum deposited films of BDHTTâBBT. The films displayed phase transitions over a range of temperatures and the morphology of the films affected the charge transport properties of the films. The maximum hole mobility observed from bottom-contact, top-gate devices was 3 Ă 10â3 cm2 Vâ1 sâ1, with an on/off ratio of 104â105 and a threshold voltage of â42 V. The morphological and self-assembly characteristics versus electronic properties are discussed for future improvement of OFET devices
Rest-frame properties of 32 gamma-ray bursts observed by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor
Aims: In this paper we study the main spectral and temporal properties of
gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by Fermi/GBM. We investigate these key
properties of GRBs in the rest-frame of the progenitor and test for possible
intra-parameter correlations to better understand the intrinsic nature of these
events. Methods: Our sample comprises 32 GRBs with measured redshift that were
observed by GBM until August 2010. 28 of them belong to the long-duration
population and 4 events were classified as short/hard bursts. For all of these
events we derive, where possible, the intrinsic peak energy in the spectrum (\eprest), the duration in the rest-frame, defined as the
time in which 90% of the burst fluence was observed (\tninetyrest) and the
isotropic equivalent bolometric energy (\eiso). Results: The distribution of
\eprest has mean and median values of 1.1 MeV and 750 keV, respectively. A
log-normal fit to the sample of long bursts peaks at ~800 keV. No high-\ep
population is found but the distribution is biased against low \ep values. We
find the lowest possible \ep that GBM can recover to be ~ 15 keV. The
\tninetyrest distribution of long GRBs peaks at ~10 s. The distribution of
\eiso has mean and median values of erg and erg, respectively. We confirm the tight correlation between \eprest
and \eiso (Amati relation) and the one between \eprest and the 1-s peak
luminosity () (Yonetoku relation). Additionally, we observe a parameter
reconstruction effect, i.e. the low-energy power law index gets softer
when \ep is located at the lower end of the detector energy range. Moreover, we
do not find any significant cosmic evolution of neither \eprest nor
\tninetyrest.Comment: accepted by A&
