FATIGUE ASSESSMENT OF CRACK GROWTH BASED ON FAILURE ASSESSMENT DIAGRAMS FOR A SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE PLATFORM
This paper deals with the assessment of fatigue crack propagation on the connection between column and brace for a semi-submersible. The analysis of global and local structural responses under different sea states are performed to acquire the transfer functions of stresses. Based on an existing crack the Failure Assessment Diagrams (FAD) are applied as criterion of acceptance for the safety of crack and structure during the crack growth calculation cycle. The crack growth rate considering threshold stress intensity factor and stress ratio is used. During safety assessment the stress response from ultimate sea state is outlined. A comparison of fatigue crack growth using ultimate stress and normal stress data with different crack growth rate is presented. The results show the reliability of fatigue assessment using FAD as a measurement of acceptability of crack propagation
DYNAMIC EFFECTS OF EQUIVALENT TRUNCATED MOORING SYSTEMS FOR A SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE PLATFORM
Physical model tests of floater with full-depth mooring system present obstacles because no tank is sufficiently large to perform model testing in reasonable scale. This paper presents numerical simulation on design method of equivalent truncated mooring systems for model testing of offshore platforms in wave basin. Based on static and dynamic equivalent, two approaches are used to design the truncated mooring systems, respectively. Considering a semi-submersible platform with full-depth and corresponding two equivalent truncated mooring systems, the floater responses and mooring line tensions are compared. The feasibility of model test with equivalent truncated mooring systems is discussed
PSweight: An R Package for Propensity Score Weighting Analysis
Propensity score weighting is an important tool for comparative effectiveness
research.Besides the inverse probability of treatment weights (IPW), recent
development has introduced a general class of balancing weights, corresponding
to alternative target populations and estimands. In particular, the overlap
weights (OW) lead to optimal covariate balance and estimation efficiency, and a
target population of scientific and policy interest. We develop the R package
PSweight to provide a comprehensive design and analysis platform for causal
inference based on propensity score weighting. PSweight supports (i) a variety
of balancing weights, (ii) binary and multiple treatments,(iii) simple and
augmented weighting estimators, (iv) nuisance-adjusted sandwich variances,
and(v) ratio estimands. PSweight also provides diagnostic tables and graphs for
covariate balance assessment. We demonstrate the functionality of the package
using a data example from the NationalChild Development Survey (NCDS), where we
evaluate the causal effect of educational attainment on income.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, 5 table
INVESTIGATION OF HYDROELASTIC BEHAVIOR OF A PONTOON-TYPE VLFS DURING UNSTEADY EXTERNAL LOADS IN WAVE CONDITION USING A HYBRID FINITE ELEMENT-BOUNDARY ELEMENT (FE-ME) METHOD
The hydroelastic behaviour of a pontoon-type VLFS subjected to unsteady external loads in wave condition is investigated in the context of the time-domain modal expansion theory, in which the boundary element method (BEM) based on time domain Kelvin sources is used for hydrodynamic forces and the finite element method (FEM) is adopted for solving the deflections of the VLFS. In this analysis, the interpolation-tabulation scheme is applied to assess rapidly and accurately the free-surface Green function in finite water depth, and the boundary integral equation of a quarter VLFS model is further established taking advantage of symmetry of flow field and structure. The VLFS is modelled as an equivalent solid plate based on the Mindlin plate theory. The coupled plate-water model is performed to determine the wave-induced responses and transient behaviour under external loads such as a huge mass impact onto the structure and moving loads of an airplane, respectively. These results are verified with existing numerical results and experimental test. Then, the developed numerical tools are used in the study of the combined action taking into account of the mass drop/airplane landing as well as forward or reverse incident wave action. The deflections of the runway, the time history of vertical positions and the trajectory of the airplane are also presented through a systematic time-domain simulation, which illustrates the usefulness of the presently developed numerical solutions
Multidimensional poverty of the ethnic tibetan farm and herder households in Gansu province, China
© 2019, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. All rights reserved. Ethnic Tibetan farm and herder households (FHH) in Gansu Province, China are stricken with poverty. Solving the poverty problem in this or other poverty pockets across China has special importance for the country’s political stability, ethnic unity, social well-being, and ecological security. This paper calculates the multidimensional poverty situation of ethnic Tibetan farm and herder households of Gansu Province, China by using the Alkire-Foster method. Twelve indicators are included in the multidimensional poverty indicator system. Results showed that 1) in the single indicator measure, the adult family members received at least 9th grade education (x3), the home toilet type (x7), and the labor availability (x2) showed a higher incidence of deprivation, 2) many FHH in the Tibetan areas of the Gansu Province are facing multidimensional poverty but the proportion of extreme poverty is very small, and 3) from the perspective of contribution rate, the adult family members received at least 9th grade education (x3), labor availability (x2), self-health assessment (x1), home toilet type (x7), and school-age children dropout rate (x) occupied the top five positions as obtained from the equal weight to dimensions (DEW) method
Effects of narrow gap wave resonance on a dual-floater WEC-breakwater hybrid system
The effects of gap wave resonance on the performance of a dual-floater hybrid system consisting of an oscillating-buoy type wave energy converter (WEC) and a floating breakwater are important for the design of such a hybrid system. This paper investigates the gap wave resonance by employing a two-dimensional numerical wave flume developed using the Star-CCM + software. The maximum wave elevation in the WEC-breakwater gap and the effects of the gap wave resonance on the performance of the dual-floater hybrid system were studied. The influence of the WEC motion and the geometrical parameters of the hybrid system on the maximum wave elevation were analyzed. The maximum gap wave elevation is essentially controlled by the vertical velocity of the free surface in the WEC-breakwater gap. The gap wave resonance was found to significantly improve the wave energy extraction performance of the hybrid system. This allowed the maximum conversion efficiency to exceed the well-known limit of 0.50 for a symmetric body in single degree-of-freedom motion. The wave resonance frequencies in the WEC-breakwater gap decreased with the increase of the gap width and the WEC draft. Due to the energy extraction of the WEC, the horizontal and vertical forces on the breakwater were reduced by up to 0.79 and 0.59, respectively
Transcriptomic analysis reveals that methyl jasmonate confers salt tolerance in alfalfa by regulating antioxidant activity and ion homeostasis
IntroductionAlfalfa, a globally cultivated forage crop, faces significant challenges due to its vulnerability to salt stress. Jasmonates (JAs) play a pivotal role in modulating both plant growth and response to stressors.MethodsIn this study, alfalfa plants were subjected to 150 mM NaCl with or without methyl jasmonate (MeJA). The physiological parameters were detected and a transcriptomic analysis was performed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying MeJA-mediated salt tolerance in alfalfa.ResultsResults showed that exogenous MeJA regulated alfalfa seed germination and primary root growth in a dose-dependent manner, with 5µM MeJA exerting the most efficient in enhancing salt tolerance. MeJA at this concentration elavated the salt tolerance of young alfalfa seedlings by refining plant growth, enhancing antioxidant capacity and ameliorating Na+ overaccumulation. Subsequent transcriptomic analysis identified genes differentially regulated by MeJA+NaCl treatment and NaCl alone. PageMan analysis revealed several significantly enriched categories altered by MeJA+NaCl treatment, compared with NaCl treatment alone, including genes involved in secondary metabolism, glutathione-based redox regulation, cell cycle, transcription factors (TFs), and other signal transductions (such as calcium and ROS). Further weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) uncovered that turquoise and yellow gene modules were tightly linked to antioxidant enzymes activity and ion content, respectively. Pyruvate decar-boxylase (PDC) and RNA demethylase (ALKBH10B) were identified as the most central hub genes in these two modules. Also, some TFs-hub genes were identified by WGCNA in these two modules highly positive-related to antioxidant enzymes activity and ion content.DiscussionMeJA triggered a large-scale transcriptomic remodeling, which might be mediated by transcriptional regulation through TFs or post-transcriptional regulation through demethylation. Our findings contributed new perspectives for understanding the underneath mechanisms by which JA-mediated salt tolerance in alfalfa

Protective effect of human serum amyloid P on CCl4-induced acute liver injury in mice.
Human serum amyloid P (hSAP), a member of the pentraxin family, inhibits the activation of fibrocytes in culture and inhibits experimental renal, lung, skin and cardiac fibrosis. As hepatic inflammation is one of the causes of liver fibrosis, in the present study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effects of hSAP against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury. Our data indicated that hSAP attenuated hepatic histopathological abnormalities and significantly decreased inflammatory cell infiltration and pro-inflammatory factor expression. Moreover, CCl4-induced apoptosis in the mouse liver was inhibited by hSAP, as measured by terminal-deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay and cleaved caspase-3 expression. hSAP significantly restored the expression of B cell lymphoma/leukemia (Bcl)-2 and suppressed the expression of Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) in vivo. The number of hepatocytes in early apoptosis stained with Annexin V was significantly reduced by 28-30% in the hSAP treatment group compared with the CCl4 group, and the expression of Bcl-2 was increased, whereas the expression of Bax and cleaved caspase-3 were significantly inhibited in the hSAP pre-treatment group compared with the CCl4 group. hSAP administration also inhibited the migration and activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) in CCl4-injured liver and suppressed the activation of isolated primary HSCs induced by transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 in vitro. Collectively, these findings suggest that hSAP exerts a protective effect againts CCl4-induced hepatic injury by suppressing the inflammatory response and hepatocyte apoptosis, potentially by inhibiting HSC activation

Human Leukocyte Antigens-B and -C Loci Associated with Posner-Schlossman Syndrome in a Southern Chinese Population
The etiology of Posner-Schlossman syndrome (PSS) remains unknown. The association of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) allelic diversity with PSS has been poorly investigated. To evaluate the association of allelic polymorphisms of class I HLA-A, -B and -C and class II HLA-DRB1 and -DQB1 with PSS, 100 unrelated patients with PSS and 128 age- and ethnically matched control subjects were recruited from a southern Chinese Han population. Polymorphisms in exons 2–4 for HLA-A, -B, -C loci, exon 2 for HLA-DRB1 and exons 2,3 for HLA-DQB1 were analyzed for association with PSS at allele and haplotype levels. The allele frequency of HLA-C*1402 in PSS patients was significantly higher than that in controls (P = 0.002, OR = 4.12). This association survived the Bonferroni correction (Pc = 0.04). The allele frequency of HLA-B*1301 in PSS patients was lower than that in the control group (P = 0.003, OR = 0.21), although this association did not survive the Bonferroni correction (Pc = 0.16). In PSS patients, the haplotype frequencies of HLA-A*1101~C*1402 and B*5101~C*1402 were higher than that in controls (P = 0.03, OR = 4.44; P = 0.02, OR = 3.20; respectively), while the HLA-B*1301~C*0304 was lower than that in controls (P = 0.007, OR = 0.23), although these associations did not survive the Bonferroni correction (Pc > 0.16). This study for the first time demonstrated that polymorphisms at the HLA-B and HLA-C loci were nominally associated with PSS in the southern Chinese Han population. Our results suggest that HLA-C*1402, A*1101~C*1402 and B*5101~C*1402 might be risk factors for PSS, whereas HLA-B*1301 plus B*1301~C*0304 might be protective factors against PSS, but even larger datasets are required to confirm these findings. Findings from this study provide valuable new clues for investigating the mechanisms and development of new diagnosis and treatment for PSS
