    Homotopy hyperbolic 3-manifolds are hyperbolic

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a rigorous computer-assisted procedure for analyzing hyperbolic 3-manifolds. This procedure is used to complete the proof of several long-standing rigidity conjectures in 3-manifold theory as well as to provide a new lower bound for the volume of a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold

Analyticity of the Susceptibility Function for Unimodal Markovian Maps of the Interval

In a previous note [Ru] the susceptibility function was analyzed for some examples of maps of the interval. The purpose of the present note is to give a concise treatment of the general unimodal Markovian case (assuming ff real analytic). We hope that it will similarly be possible to analyze maps satisfying the Collet-Eckmann condition. Eventually, as explained in [Ru], application of a theorem of Whitney [Wh] should prove differentiability of the map fρff\mapsto\rho_f restricted to a suitable set.Comment: 8 page

Students' attitudes to the communications employed during an outbreak of meningococcal disease in a UK school: a qualitative study.

BackgroundFollowing an outbreak of meningococcal disease in a school in the North West of England, the communication methods employed by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) were evaluated in order to explore ways of improving communication with the public.MethodsQualitative questionnaires were distributed to Year 12 (sixth form) students. The Framework approach was used to analyse the data, which were coded, and emergent themes identified.ResultsIn the absence of clear communication from official sources, many participants suggested that circulating rumours caused confusion and anxiety in the student population. Rumours were spread through informal networks in person or through text and MSN messaging. It was generally perceived that accurate information in this period would have been useful to allay potentially unfounded anxiety. Most students surveyed reported that they were sufficiently aware of the situation prior to receiving official announcements. The information provided by the HPA through the school was generally perceived as being useful, but it came too late.ConclusionIn outbreak situations, rumours will spread rapidly in the absence of early communication, and this can be a significant cause of anxiety. The use of digital communication strategies should be considered, since they can seed dependable information that will disseminate rapidly through peer groups

Decline and expansion : the contradictions of 21st century US imperialism in Latin America

91 leaves : col. ill., maps (chiefly col.) ; 29 cm.Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 71-91).The global dynamics faced by the US imperialism are the following: 1.) Hegemonic crisis, 2.) Spatio-temporal fix, 3.) Peak oil, and 4.) New geopolitics. Neoliberalism destabilized US hegemony in Latin America. In response, the US has increasingly militarized Latin America's oil rich regions, particular the Western Amazon, the Gulf of Mexico, and a strategic corridor between them. This militarization and intervention poses a threat to independent, progressive development in Latin America. In addition, the US' militarized response to its hegemonic decline illustrates the continuing relevance of the concept of imperialism, at a time when post-modern and critical globalization scholars have claimed that the concept is "outdated.

Razas de la gota de la papa (Phytophthora infestans) en Colombia.

    Get PDF

Novel pyrrolobenzodiazepine benzofused hybrid molecules inhibit NF-κB activity and synergise with bortezomib and ibrutinib in hematological cancers

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma (MM) are incurable hematological malignancies that are pathologically linked with aberrant NF-κB activation. In this study, we identified a group of novel C8-linked benzofused Pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepines (PBD) monomeric hybrids capable of sequence-selective inhibition of NF-κB with low nanomolar LD50 values in CLL (n=46) and MM cell lines (n=5). The lead compound, DC-1-192, significantly inhibited NF-κB DNA binding after just 4h exposure and demonstrating inhibitory effects on both canonical and non-canonical NF-κB subunits. In primary CLL cells, sensitivity to DC-1-192 was inversely correlated with RelA subunit expression (r2=0.2) and samples with BIRC3 or NOTCH1 mutations showed increased sensitivity (P=0.001). RNA-sequencing and gene set enrichment analysis confirmed the over-representation of NF-κB regulated genes in the down-regulated gene list. Furthermore, In vivo efficacy studies in NOD/SCID mice, using a systemic RPMI 8226 human multiple myeloma xenograft model, showed that DC-1-192 significantly prolonged survival (P=0.017). In addition, DC1-192 showed synergy with bortezomib and ibrutinib; synergy with ibrutinib was enhanced when CLL cells were co-cultured on CD40L-expressing fibroblasts in order to mimic the cytoprotective lymph node microenvironment (P = 0.01). Given that NF-κB plays a role in both bortezomib and ibrutinib resistance mechanisms, these data provide a strong rationale for the use of DC-1-192 in the treatment of NF-κB-driven cancers, particularly in the context of relapsed/refractory disease

Circles in the Sky: Finding Topology with the Microwave Background Radiation

    Get PDF
If the universe is finite and smaller than the distance to the surface of last scatter, then the signature of the topology of the universe is writ large on the microwave background sky. We show that the microwave background will be identified at the intersections of the surface of last scattering as seen by different ``copies'' of the observer. Since the surface of last scattering is a two-sphere, these intersections will be circles, regardless of the background geometry or topology. We therefore propose a statistic that is sensitive to all small, locally homogeneous topologies. Here, small means that the distance to the surface of last scatter is smaller than the ``topology scale'' of the universe.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, IOP format. Metacognitive Changes in Individuals with Severe Mental Disorders in Response to Psychoanalytic Therapy

Metacognitive deficits are thought to differ across mental disorder categories. Insights regarding these differences may shed light on etiology and treatment. We investigated metacognitive outcomes of long-term psychodynamic therapy in the sample with chronic/severe mental disorders and personality disorders
