Arms Control and Heavy Missiles
The governing concept infnsing US nuclear strategy over the past two decades has been mutual assnred destruction (MAD). This concept postulates that once the United States and the Soviet Union achieved an invulnerable second-strike capabi Ii ty, stabi Ii ty would result. By definition the doctrine required that each side be able to offer a genuine threat to the other in the form of an invulnerable second-strike capability. Thns, if either side\u27s second-strike capability became vulnerable it would be necessary to reestablish an invulnerable retaliatory force
Persistence of Macrocytosis After Discontinuation of Zidovudine in HIV-Infected Patients
The duration of macrocytosis after stopping zidovudine (ZDV) is unknown. Among 104 HIV-infected patients treated with ZDV for more than 1 year, 84 patients had macrocytosis at ZDV discontinuation. The median mean corpuscular volume (MCV) was 114.6 fL (range 100-128 fL). Patients were divided into 2 groups: those who did (resolved macrocytosis, n = 36) and did not (persistent macrocytosis, n = 48) normalize MCV at 3 to 6 months after ZDV discontinuation. Alcohol use (P = .02), smoking (P = .03), and lower (but within normal range) folic acid levels (P = .05) were related to the persistence of macrocytosis. A persistence of macrocytosis was observed in 57% at 3 to 6 months, 38% at 1 year and 37% at 2 years after ZDV therapy had stopped. Duration of ZDV therapy did not have an effect on the persistence of macrocytosis (P = .73). The median time for the MCV to normalize after stopping ZDV was 12.5 months
Highly purified human-derived follicle-stimulating hormone (Bravelle®) has equivalent efficacy to follitropin-beta (Follistim ®) in infertile women undergoing in vitro fertilization
BACKGROUND: These data compare the efficacy and safety of highly purified human-derived follicle-stimulating hormone (Bravelle(R)) and recombinant follitropin-β (Follistim(R)) in women undergoing in vitro fertilization. METHODS: This report describes the pooled data from two, nearly identical, randomized, controlled, parallel-group, multicenter studies conducted in a total of 19 academic and private IVF-ET centers in the United States. Infertile premenopausal women underwent pituitary down-regulation using leuprolide acetate followed by a maximum of 12 days of subcutaneous Bravelle(R) (n = 120) or Follistim(R) (n = 118), followed by administration of human chorionic gonadotropin, oocyte retrieval and embryo transfer. The primary efficacy measure was the mean number of oocytes retrieved; secondary efficacy measures included the total dose and duration of gonadotropin treatment; peak serum estradion levels; embryo transfer and implantation rates; chemical, clinical and continuing pregnancies; and live birth rates. All adverse events were recorded and injection site pain was recorded daily using a patient, self-assessment diary. RESULTS: Similar efficacy responses were observed for all outcome parameters in the two treatment groups. Although patients receiving Bravelle(R) consistently reported a greater number of chemical, clinical and continuing pregnancies, as well as an increased rate of live birth, the data did not attain statistical significance (P > 0.05). The overall incidence of adverse events was similar in both groups, but compared to Follistim(R), injections of Bravelle(R) were reported by patients to be significantly less painful (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Bravelle(R) and Follistim(R) had comparable efficacy in controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in women undergoing IVF-ET. There were no differences in the nature or number of adverse events between the treatment groups although Bravelle(R) injections were reported to be significantly less painful
Evidence for dark energy from the cosmic microwave background alone using the Atacama Cosmology Telescope lensing measurements
For the first time, measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation
(CMB) alone favor cosmologies with dark energy over models without dark
energy at a 3.2-sigma level. We demonstrate this by combining the CMB lensing
deflection power spectrum from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope with temperature
and polarization power spectra from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe.
The lensing data break the geometric degeneracy of different cosmological
models with similar CMB temperature power spectra. Our CMB-only measurement of
the dark energy density confirms other measurements from
supernovae, galaxy clusters and baryon acoustic oscillations, and demonstrates
the power of CMB lensing as a new cosmological tool.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; replaced with version accepted by Physical Review

Muc5b Is the Major Polymeric Mucin in Mucus from Thoroughbred Horses With and Without Airway Mucus Accumulation
Mucus accumulation is a feature of inflammatory airway disease in the horse and has been associated with reduced performance in racehorses. In this study, we have analysed the two major airways gel-forming mucins Muc5b and Muc5ac in respect of their site of synthesis, their biochemical properties, and their amounts in mucus from healthy horses and from horses with signs of airway mucus accumulation. Polyclonal antisera directed against equine Muc5b and Muc5ac were raised and characterised. Immunohistochemical staining of normal equine trachea showed that Muc5ac and Muc5b are produced by cells in the submucosal glands, as well as surface epithelial goblet cells. Western blotting after agarose gel electrophoresis of airway mucus from healthy horses, and horses with mucus accumulation, was used to determine the amounts of these two mucins in tracheal wash samples. The results showed that in healthy horses Muc5b was the predominant mucin with small amounts of Muc5ac. The amounts of Muc5b and Muc5ac were both dramatically increased in samples collected from horses with high mucus scores as determined visually at the time of endoscopy and that this increase also correlated with increase number of bacteria present in the sample. The change in amount of Muc5b and Muc5ac indicates that Muc5b remains the most abundant mucin in mucus. In summary, we have developed mucin specific polyclonal antibodies, which have allowed us to show that there is a significant increase in Muc5b and Muc5ac in mucus accumulated in equine airways and these increases correlated with the numbers of bacteria
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Two-Season ACTPol Lensing Power Spectrum
We report a measurement of the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background
(CMB) lensing from two seasons of Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter
(ACTPol) CMB data. The CMB lensing power spectrum is extracted from both
temperature and polarization data using quadratic estimators. We obtain results
that are consistent with the expectation from the best-fit Planck LCDM model
over a range of multipoles L=80-2100, with an amplitude of lensing A_lens =
1.06 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +/- 0.06 (sys.) relative to Planck. Our measurement of
the CMB lensing power spectrum gives sigma_8 Omega_m^0.25 = 0.643 +/- 0.054;
including baryon acoustic oscillation scale data, we constrain the amplitude of
density fluctuations to be sigma_8 = 0.831 +/- 0.053. We also update
constraints on the neutrino mass sum. We verify our lensing measurement with a
number of null tests and systematic checks, finding no evidence of significant
systematic errors. This measurement relies on a small fraction of the ACTPol
data already taken; more precise lensing results can therefore be expected from
the full ACTPol dataset.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, to be submitted to Physical Review
