The results of this calculation are then treated as a theoretical experiment, against which different effective-interaction approximations are compared. This paper examines how this composition explores exiting research in interaction and communication between instruments and digital sound processing discourse to produce a unique music mixed-media score, to explore the sonic possibilities of a multi-timbrical instrument with the integration of the visual gestures of an accessible device using processes of real-time gestural mimesis.

    Robust sure independence screening for nonpolynomial dimensional generalized linear models

    We consider the problem of variable screening in ultra-high-dimensional generalized linear models (GLMs) of nonpolynomial orders. Since the popular SIS approach is extremely unstable in the presence of contamination and noise, we discuss a new robust screening procedure based on the minimum density power divergence estimator (MDPDE) of the marginal regression coefficients. Our proposed screening procedure performs well under pure and contaminated data scenarios. We provide a theoretical motivation for the use of marginal MDPDEs for variable screening from both population as well as sample aspects; in particular, we prove that the marginal MDPDEs are uniformly consistent leading to the sure screening property of our proposed algorithm. Finally, we propose an appropriate MDPDE-based extension for robust conditional screening in GLMs along with the derivation of its sure screening property. Our proposed methods are illustrated through extensive numerical studies along with an interesting real data application

    The effects of anaesthesia on cell death in a porcine model of neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury

    Background: Hypothermia is neuroprotective after neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury. However, systemic cooling to hypothermic temperatures is a stressor and may reduce neuroprotection in awake pigs. We compared two experiments of global hypoxic-ischaemic injury in newborn pigs, in which one group received propofol–remifentanil and the other remained awake during post-insult hypothermia treatment. Methods: In both studies, newborn pigs were anaesthetised using halothane during a 45-min global hypoxic-ischaemic insult induced by reducing Fio2 and graded hypotension until a low-voltage <7 μV electroencephalogram was achieved. On reoxygenation, the pigs were randomly allocated to receive 24 h of normothermia or hypothermia. In the first study (n=18) anaesthesia was discontinued and the pigs' tracheas were extubated. In the second study (n=14) anaesthesia was continued using propofol and remifentanil. Brain injury was assessed after 72 h by classical global histopathology, Purkinje cell count, and apoptotic cell counts in the hippocampus and cerebellum. Results: Global injury was nearly 10-fold greater in the awake group compared with the anaesthetised group (P=0.021). Hypothermia was neuroprotective in the anaesthetised pigs but not the awake pigs. In the hippocampus, the density of cleaved caspase-3-positive cells was increased in awake compared with anaesthetised pigs in normothermia. In the cerebellum, Purkinje cell density was reduced in the awake pigs irrespective of treatment, and the number of cleaved caspase-3-positive Purkinje cells was greatly increased in hypothermic awake pigs. We detected no difference in cleaved caspase-3 in the granular cell layer or microglial reactivity across the groups. Conclusions: Our study provides novel insights into the significance of anaesthesia/sedation during hypothermia for achieving optimal neuroprotection

    Requirements for contractility in disordered cytoskeletal bundles

    Actomyosin contractility is essential for biological force generation, and is well understood in highly organized structures such as striated muscle. Additionally, actomyosin bundles devoid of this organization are known to contract both in vivo and in vitro, which cannot be described by standard muscle models. To narrow down the search for possible contraction mechanisms in these systems, we investigate their microscopic symmetries. We show that contractile behavior requires non-identical motors that generate large enough forces to probe the nonlinear elastic behavior of F-actin. This suggests a role for filament buckling in the contraction of these bundles, consistent with recent experimental results on reconstituted actomyosin bundles.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; text shortene

    Acute stress affects peripersonal space representation in cortisol stress responders.

    Peripersonal space is the representation of the space near the body. It is implemented by a dedicated multisensory-motor network, whose purpose is to predict and plan interactions with the environment, and which can vary depending on environmental circumstances. Here, we investigated the effect on the PPS representation of an experimentally induced stress response and compared it to a control, non-stressful, manipulation. We assessed PPS representation in healthy humans, before and after a stressful manipulation, by quantifying visuotactile interactions as a function of the distance from the body, while monitoring salivary cortisol concentration. While PPS representation was not significantly different between the control and experimental group, a relation between cortisol response and changes in PPS emerged within the experimental group. Participants who showed a cortisol stress response presented enhanced visuotactile integration for stimuli close to the body and reduced for far stimuli. Conversely, individuals with a less pronounced cortisol response showed a reduced difference in visuotactile integration between the near and the far space. In our interpretation, physiological stress resulted in a freezing-like response, where multisensory-motor resources are allocated only to the area immediately surrounding the body
