Prevalence of disorders recorded in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels attending primary-care veterinary practices in England
Concerns have been raised over breed-related health issues in purebred dogs, but reliable prevalence estimates for disorders within specific breeds are sparse. Electronically stored patient health records from primary-care practice are emerging as a useful source of epidemiological data in companion animals. This study used large volumes of health data from UK primary-care practices participating in the VetCompass animal health surveillance project to evaluate in detail the disorders diagnosed in a random selection of over 50% of dogs recorded as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCSs). Classical artificial two-dimensional atoms: the Thomson model
The ring configurations for classical two-dimensional atoms are calculated
within the Thomson model and compared with the results from `exact' numerical
simulations. The influence of the functional form of the confinement potential
and the repulsive interaction potential between the particles on the
configurations is investigated. We also give exact results on those eigenmodes
of the system whose frequency does not depend on the number of particles in the

Influence of FK 506 (tacrolimus) on circulating CD4 <sup>+</sup> t cells expressing cd25 and cd45ra antigens in 19 patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis participating in an open label drug safety trial
We have taken the opportunity of a clinical trial of the potential efficacy and safety of FK 506 (tacrolimus) in chronic progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) to examine the influence of this potent new immunosuppressant on circulating T-lymphocytes in an otherwise healthy non-transplant population. Peripheral blood levels of subsets of CD4+ T lymphocytes expressing the activation molecule interleukin-2 receptor (p55 α chain; CD25) or the CD45RA isoform were determined sequentially in 19 patients that were treated continuously with oral FK 506 (starting dose 0.15 mg/kg/day) for 12 months. No significant change in the proportion of circulating CD25 + CD4+ cells was observed over the study period in which the mean trough plasma FK 506 level rose from 0.3 ±0.2 to 0.5 ±0.4 ng/ml. There was also no significant effect of FK 506 on the percentage of CD45RA + CD4 + cells in the peripheral blood at 12 months compared with pretreatment values. Analysis of a subgroup of 7 patients, who showed a sustained reduction in CD25 + CD4+ cells and a reciprocal increase in CD45RA* CD4 * cells for at least 6 months after start of treatment, did not reveal any difference in disability at one year compared with the treatment group as a whole. The side effects of FK 506 were mild and the overall degree of disability estimated by the mean Kurtzke expanded disability status scale (EDSS) score or the ambulation index did not deteriorate significantly in the 19 patients studied over the 12 months of FK 506 administration. © 1994 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted
Coherent Line Removal: Filtering out harmonically related line interference from experimental data, with application to gravitational wave detectors
We describe a new technique for removing troublesome interference from
external coherent signals present in the gravitational wave spectrum. The
method works when the interference is present in many harmonics, as long as
they remain coherent with one another. The method can remove interference even
when the frequency changes. We apply the method to the data produced by the
Glasgow laser interferometer in 1996 and the entire series of wide lines
corresponding to the electricity supply frequency and its harmonics are
removed, leaving the spectrum clean enough to detect possible signals
previously masked by them. We also study the effects of the line removal on the
statistics of the noise in the time domain. We find that this technique seems
to reduce the level of non-Gaussian noise present in the interferometer and
therefore, it can raise the sensitivity and duty cycle of the detectors.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Revtex, psfig. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Experimental approaches for 100 TeV gamma-ray astronomy
The high energy end of gamma-ray source spectra might provide important clues
regarding the nature of the processes involved in gamma-ray emission. Several
galactic sources with hard emission spectra extending up to more than 30TeV
have already been reported. Measurements around 100TeV and above should be an
important goal for the next generation of high energy gamma-ray astronomy
experiments. Here we present several techniques providing the required exposure
(100 km^2.h). We focus our study on three Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov
Technique (IACT) based approaches: low elevation observations, large field of
view telescopes, and large telescope arrays. We comment on the advantages and
disadvantages of each approach and report simulation based estimates of their

Short wavelength spectrum and Hamiltonian stability of vortex rings
We compare dynamical and energetical stability criteria for vortex rings. It
is argued that vortex rings will be intrinsically unstable against
perturbations with short wavelengths below a critical wavelength, because the
canonical vortex Hamiltonian is unbounded from below for these modes. To
explicitly demonstrate this behaviour, we derive the oscillation spectrum of
vortex rings in incompressible, inviscid fluids, within a geometrical cutoff
procedure for the core. The spectrum develops an anomalous branch of negative
group velocity, and approaches the zero of energy for wavelengths which are
about six times the core diameter. We show the consequences of this dispersion
relation for the thermodynamics of vortex rings in superfluid He at low
