Aquaculture extension impacts in Bangladesh: a case study from Kapasia, Gazipur
With many ponds and high demand for fish, Bangladesh has a high potential for aquaculture . Since the 1980s, there have been many aquaculture extension projects. As a result, pond aquaculture production is estimated to have trebled between approximately 1990 and 2000, and is currently estimated to be in order of 750 000 t per year. This gave an ideal opportunity to understand the impacts of aquaculture extension. This study investigated the practices and performance of farmers about six years after specific extension efforts had ended, in order to gain a better understanding of the sustained practices and benefits achieved by fish farmers from extension. It followed up an earlier project in Kapasia Upazila (subdistrict) in Gazipur District north of the capital Dhaka, where the WorldFish Center with funding from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Danish International Development Agency (Danida), had researched on farming systems and had introduced adaptive integrated aquaculture practices. The Origin of Non-chaotic Behavior in Identically Driven Systems
Recently it has been found that different physical systems driven by
identical random noise behave exactly identical after a long time. It is also
suggested that this is an outcome of finite precision in numerical experiments.
Here we show that the origin of the non-chaotic behavior lies in the structural
instability of the attractor of these systems which changes to a stable fixed
point for strong enough drive. We see this to be true in all the systems
studied in literature. Thus we affirm that in chaotic systems, synchronization
can not occur only by addition of noise unless the noise destroys the strange

Hemispheric Asymmetries in Cortical Thickness
Using magnetic resonance imaging and computational cortical pattern matching methods, we analyzed hemispheric differences in regional gray matter thickness across the lateral and medial cortices in young, healthy adults (n = 60). In addition, we investigated the influence of gender on the degree of thickness asymmetry. Results revealed global and regionally specific differences between the two hemispheres, with generally thicker cortex in the left hemisphere. Regions with significant leftward asymmetry were identified in the precentral gyrus, middle frontal, anterior temporal and superior parietal lobes, while rightward asymmetry was prominent in the inferior posterior temporal lobe and inferior frontal lobe. On the medial surface, significant rightward asymmetries were observed in posterior regions, while significant leftward asymmetries were evident from the vicinity of the paracentral gyrus extending anteriorly. Asymmetry profiles were similar in both sexes, but hemispheric differences appeared slightly pronounced in males compared with females, albeit a few regions also indicated greater asymmetry in females compared with males. Parasagittal Asymmetries of the Corpus Callosum
Significant relationships have been reported between midsagittal areas of the corpus callosum and the degree of interhemispheric transfer, functional lateralization and structural brain asymmetries. No study, however, has examined whether parasagittal callosal asymmetries (i.e. those close to the midline of the brain), which may be of specific functional consequence, are present in the human brain. Thus, we applied magnetic resonance imaging and novel computational surface-based methods to encode hemispheric differences in callosal thickness at a very high resolution. Discrete callosal areas were also compared between the hemispheres. Furthermore, acknowledging the frequently reported sex differences in callosal morphology, parasagittal callosal asymmetries were examined within each gender. Results showed significant rightward asymmetries of callosal thickness predominantly in the anterior body and anterior third of the callosum, suggesting a more diffuse functional organization of callosal projections in the right hemisphere. Asymmetries were increased in men, supporting the assumption of a sexually dimorphic organization of male and female brains that involves hemispheric relations and is reflected in the organization and distribution of callosal fiber
Chandra Monitoring of the Candidate Anomalous X-ray Pulsar AX J1845.0-0258
The population of clearly identified anomalous X-ray pulsars has recently
grown to seven, however, one candidate anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) still
eludes re-confirmation. Here, we present a set of seven Chandra ACIS-S
observations of the transient pulsar AX J1845.0-0258, obtained during 2003. Our
observations reveal a faint X-ray point source within the ASCA error circle of
AX J1845.0-0258's discovery, which we designate CXOU J184454.6-025653 and
tentatively identify as the quiescent AXP. Its spectrum is well described by an
absorbed single-component blackbody (kT~2.0 keV) or power law (Gamma~1.0) that
is steady in flux on timescales of at least months, but fainter than AX
J1845.0-0258 was during its 1993 period of X-ray enhancement by at least a
factor of 13. Compared to the outburst spectrum of AX J1845.0-0258, CXOU
J184454.6-025653 is considerably harder: if truly the counterpart, then its
spectral behaviour is contrary to that seen in the established transient AXP
XTE J1810-197, which softened from kT~0.67 keV to ~0.18 keV in quiescence. This
unexpected result prompts us to examine the possibility that we have observed
an unrelated source, and we discuss the implications for AXPs, and magnetars in

Unveiling Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters with INTEGRAL
Thanks to INTEGRAL's long exposures of the Galactic Plane, the two brightest
Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters, SGR 1806-20 and SGR 1900+14, have been monitored and
studied in detail for the first time at hard-X/soft gamma rays.
This has produced a wealth of new scientific results, which we will review
here. Since SGR 1806-20 was particularly active during the last two years, more
than 300 short bursts have been observed with INTEGRAL. and their
characteristics have been studied with unprecedented sensitivity in the 15-200
keV range. A hardness-intensity anticorrelation within the bursts has been
discovered and the overall Number-Intensity distribution of the bursts has been
determined. In addition, a particularly active state, during which ~100 bursts
were emitted in ~10 minutes, has been observed on October 5 2004, indicating
that the source activity was rapidly increasing. This eventually led to the
Giant Flare of December 27th 2004, for which a possible soft gamma-ray (>80
keV) early afterglow has been detected.
The deep observations allowed us to discover the persistent emission in hard
X-rays (20-150 keV) from 1806-20 and 1900+14, the latter being in a quiescent
state, and to directly compare the spectral characteristics of all Magnetars
(two SGRs and three Anomalous X-ray Pulsars) detected with INTEGRAL.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, Presented at the conference "Isolated Neutron
