Representing Network Config Info in the Directory

    No full text
In this paper two naming schemes for the X.500 Directory are proposed. One proposal (Network Elements) concernes the representation of computer networks, the other (IP namespace) provides a mapping algorithm for IP addresses to nodes. 1 Network Elements For representing networks in the Directory we model a network as follows. A network comprises of : 1. a possibly null set of nodes, 2. a possibly null set of lines, 3. a possibly null set of (sub)networks. Basically, the objects and attributes proposed here are an extension to RFC 1279 ([HK 91]). Information about networks is kept in the DIT as subordinate of the organization maintaining the network. There is one network object giving general descriptions of the network. Subordinates of this network object are node and line objects for each element present in the network. A network can be physically or logically subdivided into several (sub)networks. In this case, a network entry will have network objects as subordinates which themselve..

Optimising FTP Traffic in the Internet

Network configuration information can be very effectively used for network traffic optimization and improving network performance. FTP traffic, one of the largest consumers of network bandwidth, is taken as a case study of how effectively network configuration information can be used. The idea is essentially to provide a workable and scalable mechanism by which a user or an application can evaluate the network cost factor corresponding to several ftp-servers. By choosing the server with the lowest cost factor, network cost of the retrieval is optimized. Cost could pertain to response time, tariff, or any other parameter. A network model based on which the comparative network costs of several servers in a network, as seen by a user or application, can actually be calculated is shown. Two implementations which realize the idea are discussed. 1 Introduction Internet in recent times has grown phenomenally, and there is an active interest in reviewing the framework and operations. There i..
