Space nuclear thermal propulsion: Evaluation of PIPET at the INEL's CTF

    Get PDF
The scope of the report is to evaluate the feasibility and provide a rough order of magnitude (ROM) estimate of cost and schedule for testing the PIPET Reactors in the Contained Test Facility (CTF). The topics are presented in viewgraph form and include the following: PIPET Facility requirements; existing CTF Facilities; CTF background; CTR report assumptions; ETS size information; ETS component arrangement evaluation; proposed ETS configuration; the cost evaluation results; and CTF schedule

A Spreading Danger: Time for a New Policy towards Chechnya. CEPS Policy Briefs No. 68, 1 April 2005

    Get PDF
The ongoing conflict in and around Chechnya is helping to feed the wider international jihadi movement, and is endangering the West as well as Russia. The next “soft target” of North Caucasian terrorism could be a Western one. Mutual recriminations over the conflict have badly damaged relations between Russia and the West. While most of the blame for this lies with Russian policies, the Western approach to the issue has often been unhelpful and irresponsible. Denunciations of Russian behaviour have not been matched by a real understanding of the Chechen conflict or a real commitment to help. In their own interest, Western countries need urgently to address the crisis in the North Caucasus. This requires them to recognize the seriousness of the threat, to open a real dialogue on cooperation with Russia rather than simply making criticisms, and to make a serious economic contribution to the region

    Kinesthetic control simulator

    Get PDF
A kinesthetic control simulator is reported that has a flat base upon which rests a support structure having a lower spherical surface for rotation on the base plate with columns which support a platform above the support structure at a desired location with respect to the center of curvature of the spherical surface. A handrail is at approximately the elevation of the hips of the operator above the platform with a ring attached to the support structure which may be used to limit the angle of tilt. Five degree freedom-of-motion can be obtained by utilizing an air pad structure for support of the control simulator

Large-Scale Geometry of Pure Mapping Class Groups of Infinite-Type Surfaces

The work of Mann and Rafi gives a classification surfaces ÎŁ\Sigma when Map(ÎŁ)\textrm{Map}(\Sigma) is globally CB, locally CB, and CB generated under the technical assumption of tameness. In this article, we restrict our study to the pure mapping class group and give a complete classification without additional assumptions. In stark contrast with the rich class of examples of Mann--Rafi, we prove that PMap(ÎŁ)\textrm{PMap}(\Sigma) is globally CB if and only if ÎŁ\Sigma is the Loch Ness monster surface, and locally CB or CB generated if and only if ÎŁ\Sigma has finitely many ends and is not a Loch Ness monster surface with (nonzero) punctures.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Relations Between Theta Functions of Genus One and Two From Geometry

    Get PDF
Genus-two curves with special symmetries are related to pairs of genus-one curves by two and three-sheeted ramified coverings. This classical work dates back to early 20th century and is known as Jacobi and Hermite reduction. Jacobians of genus-two curves can be used to construct complex two-dimensional complex projective manifolds known as Kummer surfaces. On the other hand, the defining coordinates and parameters of both elliptic curves and Kummer surfaces can be related to Riemann Theta functions and Siegel Theta functions, respectively. This result goes back to the seminal work of Mumford in the 1980s. We use the geometric relation between elliptic curves and Kummer surfaces to derive functional relations between Theta functions along Humbert varieties of low discriminant

Phantom Limbs and Phantom Worlds: A Phenomenological Study Concerning Experiences of the Absent

    Get PDF
The phantom limb is an ailment in which a patient perceives a limb that is no longer present after amputation. They may experience pain or tingling in these regions, or even try to perform tasks involving the former limb. For example, they may try to walk while missing a leg, or try to open a door with a non-existent hand. Some research asserts that it originates from neural signal re-networking after damage from amputation, which leads to pain in the patient (Ardelean 2014, 308). However, a medical diagnosis such as this only provides an objective explanation of the disease, which does not necessarily reflect how the patient experiences their body. It assumes that a patient’s experience of the disease is only rooted in their damaged neurons, which based on descriptions of patients with phantom limbs is not entirely accurate. Instead, this disease manifests itself in the relationships a patient takes up with the world around them. For example, a patient’s experience of the phantom limb suggests their participation in activities they did in the past, such as walking, that are now impossible. A field of study that attends to the patient’s experience of the phantom limb may thus provide more information in regards to this phenomenon than medicine. In particular, the use of phenomenology proves especially useful. Phenomenology is the study of one’s lived experience as seen from the first person point of view. The goal of a phenomenological study is to gain insight into the meaning surrounding a specific experience. These studies not only provide information for the person of study, but also for those who wish to understand the experience the other is going through. Through analyzing the phantom limb from this perspective, important features of a patient’s experience can be understood
