Parkinson\u27s Disease: Unanticipated Sequela of an Attempted Suicide

    Get PDF
Studies exploring the association between pesticide exposure and Parkinson\u27s disease (PD) are largely limited to rural populations with occupational exposure. We could find no literature regarding PD occurring after ingestion of a pesticide. We present a case from our clinic of a man who developed PD following ingestion of a liquid pesticide during a suicide attempt. PD was diagnosed, and the patient\u27s symptoms improved following initiation of carbidopa/levodopa. This case illustrates the potential role of ingested pesticide exposure in provoking and accelerating the manifestations of PD. Keywords: basal ganglia; kratom; mptp; parkinson\u27 s disease; pesticide

The Doctrine of Man in Contemporary Existential Psychiatry and its Adequacy in Christian Pastoral Counseling

It would indeed by an exhausting search to try to trace the social and historical origins of the various therapeutic disciplines and far beyond the scope of this paper. This paper is here concerned only with existentialism and its influence upon the contemporary psychiatric scene in a way described by Pattison above

From Perceiving To Achieving: Experiences Of An Adolescent With Autism Spectrum Disorder In A Summer Day Program

Literature describing the experiences of adolescents and their families with summer day-programs is scarce. This study sought to reveal such experiences from one individual participating in a summer program, HorseAbility, in which individuals with disabilities interact with each other through planned and self-directed activities, therapeutic riding, and activities associated with taking care of horses. Interviews were conducted with an adolescent diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, his parent, a staff member of the summer day program, and the therapeutic riding instructor. Observation data and personal journaling was also used for data collection mechanisms. Data sources were triangulated to provide a rich understanding of the case. The interviews were transcribed and coded using an inductive approach. Two major themes were identified including, perception is critical to adolescent experiences and the just right challenge’s role for adolescent engagement and memory building. Results suggest reinforcement of typical adolescent developmental challenges and the need for engagement opportunities based upon skill development. Suggestions for future program development are included to support occupational engagement

    Church Conflict/Church Growth

    Get PDF
Sadly, conflict is a common occurrence in congregations of every denomination across America. It happens to traditional, blended, and contemporary churches for a variety of reasons, with the capacity to reach extreme levels of intensity. Its impact on a congregation can be devastating. Relationships are damaged, friendships strained, and many decide to stop attending. The church\u27s ministry and evangelism efforts are usually brought to a standstill, leaving a divided fellowship that has taken its eyes off the harvest and has become distracted from fulfilling the Great Commission

Maya Lithic Studies: Papers From the 1976 Belize Filed Symposium

As a result of intensified archaeological activity in northern Belize, and specifically the work of the joint British Museum-Cambridge University research project (directed by Norman Hammond), a variety of new data have been obtained on the prehistory of this region. Of the many sites that have been mapped, tested, or otherwise investigated in the past few years, one stands out as a major center of ancient Maya lithic technology. This is the site of Colha, located south of Orange Walk Town, along the highway between that town and Belize City. Personnel of the British Museum-Cambridge University Corozal Project began limited research at the site in 1973. As a result of efforts then and since, parts of this extensive site have been mapped, some stratigraphic tests have been made, and controlled surface sampling and lithic analysis have been initiated (the latter through the hard work of Richard Wilk). These investigations, although preliminary in nature, were sufficient to indicate that Colha had indeed been a significant center of stone tool production for the Maya, from Middle Preclassic through Postclassic times

Generalized Descent Methods for Asymmetric Systems of Equations and Variational Inequalities

We consider generalizations of the steepest descent algorithm for solving asymmetric systems of equations. We first show that if the system is linear and is defined by a matrix M, then the method converges if M2 is positive definite. We also establish easy to verify conditions on the matrix M that ensure that M is positive definite, and develop a scaling procedure that extends the class of matrices that satisfy the convergence conditions. In addition, we establish a local convergence result for nonlinear systems defined by uniformly monotone maps, and discuss a class of general descent methods. Finally, we show that a variant of the Frank-Wolfe method will solve a certain class of variational inequality problems. All of the methods that we consider reduce to standard nonlinear programming algorithms for equivalent optimization problems when the Jacobian of the underlying problem map is symmetric. We interpret the convergence conditions for the generalized steepest descent algorithms as restricting the degree of asymmetry of the problem map
