    Remaining Vigilant Against Domestic Terrorism: Making Meaning of Counterterrorism in a National Awareness Campaign

    The purpose of this study was to understand how publics make meaning of terrorism and counterterrorism and the counterterrorism messages from the Department of Homeland Security's See Something, Say Something counterterrorism campaign, and if that meaning impacted their intention to act on these messages. Using the Situational Theory of Publics as the primary theoretical framework, this exploratory study took a qualitative approach; conducting in-depth interviews with both college students from a large Mid-Atlantic State University (young adult publics), and Department of Defense employees (government publics). Findings reveal that participants became more involved with the campaign messages as the problem began to impact them directly. Additionally, young adult public participants are not actively seeking out counterterrorism information, while it is a part of the day-to-day routine for government public participants. The study shows that understanding how publics are impacted by terrorism, will affect how they view and process counterterrorism messages

    Science requirements for a global change technology architecture trade study

    Science requirements for a global change technology initiative (GCTI) Architecture Trade Study were established by reviewing and synthesizing results from recent studies. A scientific rationale was adopted and used to identify a comprehensive set of measureables and their priorities. Spatial and temporal requirements for a number of measurement parameters were evaluated based on results from several working group studies. Science requirements were defined using these study results in conjunction with the guidelines for investigating global changes over a time scale of decades to centuries. Requirements are given separately for global studies and regional process studies. For global studies, temporal requirements are for sampling every 1 to 12 hours for atmospheric and radiation parameters and 1 day or more for most earth surface measurements. Therefore, the atmospheric measureables provide the most critical drivers for temporal sampling. Spatial sampling requirements vary from 1 km for land and ocean surface characteristics to 50 km for some atmospheric parameters. Thus, the land and ocean surface parameters have the more significant spatial variations and provide the most challenging spatial sampling requirements

    Rate of Diffusion of Radioactive Ions in Gels

    A simple gel-to-gel method is described for the estimation of diffusion coefficients (D) of radio-isotopic chemicals. Cold and hot gel cylinders, enclosed in small hypodermic syringes with their needle ends cut off, were carefully joined together, and diffusion was allowed to proceed for several hours. Slices of gels were then obtained for counting of activities. Application of the classical theory of diffusion permitted calculations of D values

We obtain conditions under which a cyclically presented group possesses one or more of these properties. We apply our results to a class of groups introduced by Prishchepov which contains, amongst others, the various generalizations of Fibonacci groups introduced by Campbell and Robertson

    Towards W b bbar + j at NLO with an automatized approach to one-loop computations

    We present results for the O(alpha_s) virtual corrections to q g -> W b bbar q' obtained with a new automatized approach to the evaluation of one-loop amplitudes in terms of Feynman diagrams. Together with the O(alpha_s) corrections to q q' -> W b bbar g, which can be obtained from our results by crossing symmetry, this represents the bulk of the next-to-leading order virtual QCD corrections to W b bbar + j and W b + j hadronic production, calculated in a fixed-flavor scheme with four light flavors. Furthermore, these corrections represent a well defined and independent subset of the 1-loop amplitudes needed for the NNLO calculation of W b bbar. Our approach was tested against several existing results for NLO amplitudes including selected O(alpha_s) one-loop corrections to W + 3 j hadronic production. We discuss the efficiency of our method both with respect to evaluation time and numerical stability.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure

    Short-term prospective memory deficits in chronic back pain patients

    Objective: Chronic pain, particularly low back pain, is widespread. Although a great deal is known about the impact that this has on quality of life and physical activity, relatively little has been established regarding the more cognitive effects of pain. This study aims to find out whether individuals with chronic pain experience memory deficits in prospective memory (PM), the process of remembering to do things at some future point in time. Examples of PM include remembering to keep an appointment, such as a visit to a clinic, or to perform a particular task, such as paying a bill on time. Methods: The PM of 50 participants with chronic pain was compared with 50 pain-free participants. Each participant completed the Prospective Memory Questionnaire, which assesses three aspects of prospective memory (short-term habitual, long-term episodic, and internally cued), and records the use of strategies to aid remembering. Results: In comparison to those not in pain, participants with chronic pain had significantly impaired short-term prospective memory, an effect which was evident even after co-varying use of analgesics and other drugs. Conclusions: These findings provide new insights into prospective memory dysfunction in people with chronic pain. Possible mechanisms for this dysfunction are discussed and suggestions for future research given

    Damage spreading in random field systems

    We investigate how a quenched random field influences the damage spreading transition in kinetic Ising models. To this end we generalize a recent master equation approach and derive an effective field theory for damage spreading in random field systems. This theory is applied to the Glauber Ising model with a bimodal random field distribution. We find that the random field influences the spreading transition by two different mechanisms with opposite effects. First, the random field favors the same particular direction of the spin variable at each site in both systems which reduces the damage. Second, the random field suppresses the magnetization which, in turn, tends to increase the damage. The competition between these two effects leads to a rich behavior.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 3 eps figure
