The Effects of Communication Modality on Teamwork Processes
Since the onset of the digital age, organizations have been able to make use of teams of individuals distributed geographically to remain competitive. While strides have been made to understand the effectiveness of collocated teams, research has yet to sufficiently explore the effects of emerging technologies on team processes and effectiveness. A laboratory study, where dyads were asked to create a spreadsheet by following a set of explicit instructions (i.e., a psychomotor task), was conducted to manipulate the communication modalities most commonly used between collaborators (i.e., face-to-face vs. audio) and compare the effects of adding a shared workspace application. The experiment demonstrated that when teams worked face-to-face, they exhibited teamwork behaviors to a greater extent than when they worked via audio (i.e., monitoring and backup were greater), and team members perceived their performance to be greater when face-to-face than when using audio alone. The use of a shared workspace enhanced team processes such that distributed teams were able to exhibit teamwork behaviors (i.e., mutual performance monitoring, intra-team feedback, backup) to a greater extent than when using audio alone. Teams also committed fewer errors when using a shared workspace than when using audio alone. Practical implications and limitations are discussed
The Effects of Parcels and Latent Variable Scores on the Detection of Interactions in Structural Equation Modeling
Numerous theories in the behavioral and organizational sciences involve the regression of an outcome variable on component terms and their product to evaluate interaction effects. There are numerous statistical difficulties with this multiple regression approach. The most serious is measurement error, requiring the use of structural equation modeling. Jöreskog and Yang (1996) described a nonlinear structural equation modeling procedure that incorporates mean structures in the covariance analysis. They demonstrated that only one indicator for the product term is necessary for model identification. Unfortunately, the Jöreskog-Yang procedure leads to biased estimates of the product coefficient. In this dissertation, I propose that (1) the proper use of item parcels can reduce bias in estimates, and (2) that using a relatively new technique of analysis (creation of latent variable scores) can also be fruitful in removing measurement error and improving the estimation of product terms. Two studies investigated these proposals. In Study 1, archival data were analyzed using the proposed techniques. The interaction hypothesis tested by the various techniques is that a competitive climate influences perceptions of coworker support, and that this relationship is moderated by (interacts with) a person\u27s level of trait competitiveness. Study 2 involved a Monte Carlo investigation of methods for estimating an interaction effect. The Monte Carlo research included design factors for (a) effect size, (b) parceling strategy, and (c) method of analysis. Study 1 demonstrated that method of analysis and parceling strategy affected the detection of the moderator effect of competition on two types of coworker support (instrumental and affective). Variability in the t-tests and effect size indices lend credibility for the need for the Monte-Carlo investigation. Study 2 demonstrated that (1) there is greater variability in the estimation of the interaction effect with the Jöreskog-Yang method than the latent variable scores method, (2) parceling strategy has the most influence on the interaction effect in the Jöreskog-Yang method, and this effect is dependent upon which strategy is used, and (3) the latent variable score method is superior to the Jöreskog-Yang method with respect to statistical decision making (i.e., fewer Type II errors). Multisite functional connectivity MRI classification of autism: ABIDE results
Background:: Systematic differences in functional connectivity MRI metrics have been consistently observed in autism, with predominantly decreased cortico-cortical connectivity. Previous attempts at single subject classification in high-functioning autism using whole brain point-to-point functional connectivity have yielded about 80% accurate classification of autism vs. control subjects across a wide age range. We attempted to replicate the method and results using the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) including resting state fMRI data obtained from 964 subjects and 16 separate international sites. Methods:: For each of 964 subjects, we obtained pairwise functional connectivity measurements from a lattice of 7266 regions of interest covering the gray matter (26.4 million “connections”) after preprocessing that included motion and slice timing correction, coregistration to an anatomic image, normalization to standard space, and voxelwise removal by regression of motion parameters, soft tissue, CSF, and white matter signals. Connections were grouped into multiple bins, and a leave-one-out classifier was evaluated on connections comprising each set of bins. Age, age-squared, gender, handedness, and site were included as covariates for the classifier. Results:: Classification accuracy significantly outperformed chance but was much lower for multisite prediction than for previous single site results. As high as 60% accuracy was obtained for whole brain classification, with the best accuracy from connections involving regions of the default mode network, parahippocampaland fusiform gyri, insula, Wernicke Area, and intraparietal sulcus. The classifier score was related to symptom severity, social function, daily living skills, and verbal IQ. Classification accuracy was significantly higher for sites with longer BOLD imaging times. Conclusions:: Multisite functional connectivity classification of autism outperformed chance using a simple leave-one-out classifier, but exhibited poorer accuracy than for single site results. Attempts to use multisite classifiers will likely require improved classification algorithms, longer BOLD imaging times, and standardized acquisition parameters for possible future clinical utility
Cricket, migration and diasporic communities
Ever since different communities began processes of global migration, sport has been an integral feature in how we conceptualise and experience the notion of being part of a diaspora. Sport provides diasporic communities with a powerful means for creating transnational ties, but also shapes ideas of their ethnic and racial identities. In spite of this, theories of diaspora have been applied sparingly to sporting discourses. Due mainly to its central role in spreading dominant white racial narratives within the British Empire, and the various ways different ethnic groups have ‘played’ with the meanings and associations of the sport in the (post-)colonial period, cricket is an interesting focus for academic research. Despite W.G. Grace’s claim that cricket advances civilisation by promoting a common bond, binding together peoples of vastly different backgrounds, to this day cricket operates strict symbolic boundaries; defining those who do, and equally, do not belong. C.L.R. James’ now famous metaphor of looking ‘beyond the boundary’ captures the belief that, to fully understand the significance of cricket, and the sport’s roles in changing and shaping society, one must consider the wider social and political contexts within which the game is played. The collection of papers in this special issue does just that. Abnormal lateralization of functional connectivity between language and default mode regions in autism
Background: Lateralization of brain structure and function occurs in typical development, and abnormal lateralization is present in various neuropsychiatric disorders. Autism is characterized by a lack of left lateralization in structure and function of regions involved in language, such as Broca and Wernicke areas. Methods: Using functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging from a large publicly available sample (n = 964), we tested whether abnormal functional lateralization in autism exists preferentially in language regions or in a more diffuse pattern across networks of lateralized brain regions. Results: The autism group exhibited significantly reduced left lateralization in a few connections involving language regions and regions from the default mode network, but results were not significant throughout left- and right-lateralized networks. There is a trend that suggests the lack of left lateralization in a connection involving Wernicke area and the posterior cingulate cortex associates with more severe autism. Conclusions: Abnormal language lateralization in autism may be due to abnormal language development rather than to a deficit in hemispheric specialization of the entire brain
Wound healing and hyper-hydration - a counter intuitive model
Winters seminal work in the 1960s relating to providing an optimal level of moisture to aid wound healing (granulation and re-epithelialisation) has been the single most effective advance in wound care over many decades. As such the development of advanced wound dressings that manage the fluidic wound environment have provided significant benefits in terms of healing to both patient and clinician. Although moist wound healing provides the guiding management principle confusion may arise between what is deemed to be an adequate level of tissue hydration and the risk of developing maceration. In addition, the counter-intuitive model ‘hyper-hydration’ of tissue appears to frustrate the moist wound healing approach and advocate a course of intervention whereby tissue is hydrated beyond what is a normally acceptable therapeutic level. This paper discusses tissue hydration, the cause and effect of maceration and distinguishes these from hyper-hydration of tissue. The rationale is to provide the clinician with a knowledge base that allows optimisation of treatment and outcomes and explains the reasoning behind wound healing using hyper-hydration
Estimation of Radiation Dosimetry for 68Ga-HBED-CC (PSMA-11) in Patients with Suspected Recurrence of Prostate Cancer
Introduction
This study was performed to estimate the human radiation dosimetry for [68Ga]Ga-HBED-CC (PSMA-11) (68Ga PSMA-11).
Methods
Under an RDRC-approved research protocol, we evaluated the biodistribution and pharmacokinetics of 68Ga PSMA-11 with serial PET imaging following intravenous administration to nine prostate cancer patients in whom clinical [11C]acetate PET/CT exams had been independently performed under Expanded Access IND 118,204. List-mode imaging was performed over the initial 0–10 min post-injection with the pelvis in the field-of-view. Whole-body images were acquired, pelvis-to-head, at 15, 60, and 90-min post-injection. Additional images of the pelvis were acquired at 40-min and 115-min, and voided urine collected from each subject at 48-min and 120-min post-injection. Radiation dosimetry estimates were calculated from these data using the OLINDA software package.
Results
Renal uptake was high and relatively invariant, ranging from 11% to 14% of the injected dose between 15 and 90-min post-injection. Radioactivity collected in the voided urine accounted for 14% of the injected dose over a period of 120-min. Lymph nodes and skeletal metastases suspicious for prostate cancer recurrence were detected in a greater number of patients using 68Ga PSMA-11 than using 11C-acetate.
Conclusion
Kidneys are the critical organ following 68Ga PSMA-11 administration, receiving an estimated dose of 0.413 mGy/MBq.
Advances in knowledge and implications for patient care
This study confirms that the kidneys will be the critical organ following intravenous administration of 68Ga PSMA-11, and provided data consistent with the expectation that 68Ga PSMA-11 will be superior to [11C]acetate for defining sites of recurrence in prostate cancer patients presenting with biochemical relapse
