Modern buildings in RIBE are a rare occurrence, therefore the risk of succumbing to pastiche must be avoided. How does a new building retain the quality of materials, form, surfaces and space required in a historic city? Traditional methods have been applied in terms of materials used, coarse timber planks, handmade bricks and sloppy shuttered concrete: all point possibly to a time in the history, yet are manifested in a contemporary building form. The priority being material honesty that helps regenerate the area around the cathedral

Osteoporosis among Fallers without Concomitant Fracture Identified in an Emergency Department: Frequencies and Risk Factors

We aimed to determine whether the Emergency Department (ED) is a suitable entrance point for osteoporosis screening among fallers without concomitant fracture compared to referral from general practice. Furthermore, to identify factors associated with osteoporosis among fallers. Methods. Patients aged 50–80 years sustaining a low-energy fall without fracture were identified from an ED (n = 199). Patients answered a questionnaire on risk factors and underwent osteodensitometry. Data was compared to a group of patients routinely referred to osteodensitometry from general practice (n = 201). Results. Among the 199 included fallers, 41 (21%) had osteoporosis. Among these, 35 (85%) reported either previous fracture or reduced body height (>3 cm). These two risk factors were more frequent among fallers with osteoporosis compared to fallers with normal bone mineral density or osteopenia (previous fracture P = .044, height reduction P = .0016). The osteoporosis frequency among fallers from ED did not differ from a similarly aged patient-group referred from general practice (P = .34). Conclusion. Osteodensitometry should be considered among fallers without fracture presenting in the ED, especially if the patient has a prior fracture or declined body height. Since fallers generally have higher fracture risk, the ED might serve as an additional entrance to osteodensitometry compared to referral from primary care

    Kapererhvervets Ăžkonomi i Nordjylland 1807-1814

The privateering business in North Jutland, 1807-1814The Danish-Norwegian involvement in the Napoleonic Wars from 1807-1814 is remembered as the ‘Englandskrigen. Taking sides with Napoleon the Danes and Norwegians were vastly overpowered by the British navy at sea throughout the war. Nonetheless, the Danes were able to disturb British trade in and out of the Baltic Sea through the deployment of hundreds of privateering vessels. This article investigates whether or not it was profitable for the many privateers to enter into this particular business. We analyze court cases and lists of goods acquired as prizes by privateers to answer the question of profitability, along with estimates of the fixed costs and running costs associated with privateering. The results suggest that in general there seems to have been an economic loss to running a privateer-vessel as ship-owner, since it seems that there would be more expenses than earnings linked to the operation for the investor. On the other hand, our findings would also suggest that there would be easy money in the industry for the common sailor, and especially so with extraordinarily large prizes

Tracing postrepresentational visions of the city: representing the unrepresentable Skateworlds of Tyneside

In any visualisation of the city more is left unseen than made visible. Contemporary visualisations of the city are increasingly influenced by quantification, and thus anything which cannot be quantified is hidden. In contrast, we explore the use of ‘lo-fi’, doodled, participatory maps made by skateboarders in Tyneside, England, as a means to represent their cityscape. Drawing on established work an skateboarding and recent developments in cartography, we argue that skateboarders understand the city from a postrepresentational perspective. Such a framing presents a series of challenges to map their worlds which we explore through a processual account of our mapmaking practice. In this process we chart how skateboarders’ mappings became part of a more significant interplay of performance, identity, visualisation, and exhibition. The paper makes contributions to the emerging field of postrepresentational cartography and argues that its processual focus provides useful tools to understand how visions of the city are produced
