Upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on surfaces
In this paper we will prove new extrinsic upper bounds for the eigenvalues of
the Dirac operator on an isometrically immersed surface as well as intrinsic bounds for 2-dimensional compact manifolds of
genus zero and genus one. Moreover, we compare the different estimates of the
eigenvalue of the Dirac operator for special families of metrics.Comment: Latex2.09, 23 page
Skjøtselsplan for kystlynghei.
Skjøtselsplan for kystlynghei.
Skjøtselsplandelen er utarbeidet i 2015.
Skjøtselsplan for kystlynghei. Holandsosen naturreservat, Vega kommune
A No-Go Theorem for the Consistent Quantization of Spin 3/2 Fields on General Curved Spacetimes
It is well-known that coupling a spin -field to a gravitational or
electromagnetic background leads to potential problems both in the classical
and in the quantum theory. Various solutions to these problems have been
proposed so far, which are all restricted to a limited class of backgrounds. On
the other hand, negative results for general gravitational backgrounds have
been reported only for a limited set of couplings to the background to date.
Hence, to our knowledge, a comprehensive analysis of all possible couplings to
the gravitational field and general gravitational backgrounds including
off-shell ones has not been performed so far. In this work we analyse whether
it is possible to couple a spin -field to a gravitational field in
such a way that the resulting quantum theory is consistent on arbitrary
gravitational backgrounds. We find that this is impossible as all couplings
require the background to be an Einstein spacetime for consistency. This
enforces the widespread belief that supergravity theories are the only
meaningful models which contain spin fields as in these models such
restrictions of the gravitational background appear naturally as on-shell
conditions.Comment: 8 pages, substantially abridged, results unchange
Skjøtselsplan for Sør-Åkerøya og omkringliggende øyer. Alstahaug kommune, Nordland.
Sør-Åkerøya og omliggende øyer ligger sørvest i Alstahaug kommune. Åkerøysundet skiller øya fra Hestøya i vest/nordvest. Sør-Åkerøya ligger innenfor Utvalgt kulturlandskap i jordbruket – Hestøy/Blomsøy/Skålvær.
Long Non-coding RNAs: At the Heart of Cardiac Dysfunction?
During the past decade numerous studies highlighted the importance of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in orchestrating cardiovascular cell signaling. Classified only by a transcript size of more than 200 nucleotides and their inability to code for proteins, lncRNAs constitute a heterogeneous group of RNA molecules with versatile functions and interaction partners, thus interfering with numerous endogenous signaling pathways. Intrinsic transcriptional regulation of lncRNAs is not only specific for different cell types or developmental stages, but may also change in response to stress factors or under pathological conditions. Regarding the heart, an increasing number of studies described the critical regulation of lncRNAs in multiple cardiac disorders, underlining their key role in the development and progression of cardiac diseases. In this review article, we will summarize functional cardiac lncRNAs with a detailed view on their molecular mode of action in pathological cardiac remodeling and myocardial infarction. In addition, we will discuss the use of circulating lncRNAs as biomarkers for prognostic and diagnostic purposes and highlight the potential of lncRNAs as a novel class of therapeutic targets for therapeutic purpose in heart diseases
Suicides and ambient temperature in Switzerland: A nationwide time-series analysis.
AIM OF THE STUDY
Previous literature suggests that ambient temperature may play a role in increasing the risk of suicide. Although in Switzerland suicides are an important cause of death, limited research exists on risk factors for suicidal behaviour, including ambient temperature. We aimed to assess the short-term association between ambient temperature and suicide risk in Switzerland between 1995 and 2016, and the differences by region, individual characteristics and method of suicide.
METHODS
We collected daily data on suicides and mean temperatures in each canton of Switzerland. We used a two-stage approach, consisting of a case time series analysis using conditional quasi-Poisson and distributed lag non-linear models followed by a multivariate meta-regression analysis. We conducted subgroup analyses by sex, age (65 years) and method of suicide (violent or nonviolent).
RESULTS
Between 1995 and 2016, there were a total of 24,067 suicides in Switzerland. Overall, we found a positive and non-linear temperature-suicide association in all regions. On average, the risk of suicide increased by 34% (1.34 relative risk [95% confidence interval: 1.19-1.52]) from the 10th to the 99th temperature percentile in Switzerland (lag period of 0-2 days). Indications of larger risks were mostly found in females, younger individuals (<35 years) and with nonviolent methods. Regional risks ranged from 24% (East region) to 55% (North-West region).
CONCLUSIONS
Our findings suggest that increasing temperatures could be considered a risk factor for suicidal behaviour in Switzerland. Knowledge of the profile of people committing suicide could help us to understand the mechanisms behind this association and thus support policymakers in suicide prevention
