    Unrest at Domuyo Volcano, Argentina, detected by geophysical and geodetic data and morphometric analysis

    New volcanic unrest has been detected in the Domuyo Volcanic Center (DVC), to the east of the Andes Southern Volcanic Zone in Argentina. To better understand this activity, we investigated new seismic monitoring data, gravimetric and magnetic campaign data, and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) deformation maps, and we derived an image of the magma plumbing system and the likely source of the unrest episode. Seismic events recorded during 2017-2018 nucleate beneath the southwestern flank of the DVC. Ground deformation maps derived from InSAR processing of Sentinel-1 data exhibit an inflation area exceeding 300 km2, from 2014 to at least March 2018, which can be explained by an inflating sill model located 7 km deep. The Bouguer anomaly reveals a negative density contrast of ~35 km wavelength, which is spatially coincident with the InSAR pattern. Our 3D density modeling suggests a body approximately 4-6 km deep with a density contrast of -550 kg/m3. Therefore, the geophysical and geodetic data allow identification of the plumbing system that is subject to inflation at these shallow crustal depths. We compared the presence and dimensions of the inferred doming area to the drainage patterns of the area, which support long-established incremental uplift according to morphometric analysis.     Outils basés simulation pour la conception d'une protection haptique sur l'axe de roulis pour hélicoptère

    International audienceThe latest evolution of pilot controllers, referred to as ASSU (Active Side Sticks Units) provides static and dynamic tactile force (or haptic) feedback to the pilot at the grip. Combined with FBW (fly-by-wire), this promising technology has enhanced safety levels compared to the original mechanical linkage systems they have started to replace, while offering vast improved benefits in terms of carefree handling and pilot situational awareness. In the framework of a PhD thesis, the Information Processing and Systems Department (DTIS) of ONERA and SAFRAN Electronics & Defense have started a cooperation to evaluate the interest and the different possibilities offered by the ASSU technology to improve safety and handling qualities of rotary wing aircraft. Up to now, the design and tuning of these functions were essentially performed thanks to numerous simulator sessions or flight tests with pilots. More than just providing a set of values for the required parameters defining the cueing function (hopefully an optimal set of parameters), it is expected that the approach presented here would reduce the number of piloted simulation tests and associated difficulties of the availability of pilots, the significant amount of time and material resources. The main objective of this work is to develop a design methodology based on the simulation of the entire helicopter control loop (also including the pilot in some form) and enabling the definition and parameterization of cueing functions. Moreover, some objective criteria will be defined and used to design the force feedback laws, bringing additional means of evaluation and validation than the classical subjective rating scales

This paper describes the work carried out to model an environment for simulation and evaluation of haptic feedback laws. An experiment, implemented in the simulator PycsHel at ONERA Salon de Provence, has brought some insight about the influence of ASSU's parameters on the detection of specific haptic feedbacks (Softstops).     A Spectral Framework for a Class of Undirected Hypergraphs

    We extend the graph spectral framework to a new class of undirected hypergraphs with bipartite hyperedges. A bipartite hyperedge is a pair of disjoint sets of nodes in which every node is associated with a weight. A bipartite hyperedge can be viewed as a relation between two teams of nodes in which every node has a weighted contribution to its team. Undirected hypergraphs generalize over undirected graphs. Consistently with the case of graphs, we define the notions of hypergraph gradient, hypergraph Laplacian, and hypergraph kernel as the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse of a hypergraph Laplacian. Therefore, smooth labeling of (teams of) nodes and hypergraph regularization methods can be performed. Contrary to the graph case, we show that the class of hypergraph Laplacians is closed by the pseudoinverse operation (thus it is also the class of hypergraphs kernels), and is closed by convex linear combination. Closure properties allow us to define (hyper)graph combinations and operations while keeping a hypergraph interpretation of the result. We exhibit a subclass of signed graphs that can be associated with hypergraphs in a constructive way. A hypergraph and its associated signed graph have the same Laplacian. This property allows us to define a distance between nodes in undirected hypergraphs as well as in the subclass of signed graphs. The distance coincides with the usual definition of commute-time distance when the equivalent signed graph turns out to be a graph. We claim that undirected hypergraphs open the way to solve new learning tasks and model new problems based on set similarity or dominance. We are currently exploring applications for modeling games between teams and for graph summarization

    Extremes in worldwide geomagnetic activity

    Geomagnetic storms pose a hazard to many modern technologies. Therefore understanding how severe such storms could be is important to a wide range of space weather data and forecast end-users. Extreme value statistical (EVS) methods are therefore applied to a global set of geomagnetic observatory data to determine the one in 100 and one in 200 year extreme values in the north, east and horizontal field strengths and their time rates-of-change. We use one-minute digital data from geographically widely distributed observatories with typically a few decades of digital operations. Individual generalised Pareto distribution functions are fitted to the tail of each observatory data distribution, above some threshold marking the onset of extreme activity for that location. We discuss the return levels, for the one in 100 and one in 200 year events, with respect to the geographical distribution of the observatories, the proximity to auroral and equatorial electrojets and compare results with a separate EVS study of European-only magnetic observatory dat
